I can't believe this game has gotten so cheap, it's awesome! The layout is one of Lawlor's best, and it has a ton of stuff to do. 2 ramps, 3 kickouts, 3 magnet accelerators, a moving car bash toy, 2 spinners, 3 drops, 7 diverters, a captive ball and a "windmill" target thrown in for good measure. It's a beast!

I just put up 54M on mine after shopping it out and dialing it in (factory, 3 ball, outlanes at "medium"). The flow on this game is GREAT. Sorry for doing a "best game evar" kinda post, but I'm really enjoying it! I was planning to play it and flip it at the next Gameroom Expo here in Atlanta, but I think it's a keeper. I'm really looking forward to re-theming this as "Talladega Nights" when I get some down time. Woohoo!

This PDF is a must read if you own the game, or you're playing it in a league or tourney:

The rules are surprisingly good. Louis Koziarz and Pat Lawlor teamed up on NASCAR in 2005 after doing RBION in 2004 - another great, underrated pin.

#3 9 years ago

Sorry, I cannot be a part of your fan club, as i just sold mine But I would be if I still had it. This game is so underrated! I am really gonna miss mine.

Make sure the garage does not go SDTM, many of these did.

Quoted from loppydog:

Yes, that's probably the main reason it's been rated so low. There are a lot of good tips for fixing this, but what worked best for me was just changing the coil strength to "soft".

#5 9 years ago

You can also try cutting a strip of mylar and placing it on the under side of the top of the scoop. Thats what worked for me. Mine went perfectly to the left flipper every time after that for over a year (and still going).

#6 9 years ago

Finally!!!!! I love this game!!!! always have... great to finally see a club for it!!!
Green,Green,Green.... Go,Go,Go!!!!

#7 9 years ago

I like it too but mine's been down for a couple of weeks. Still trying to diagnose a switch/coil issue.

I have the SDTM issue and will get that figured out when its back up and running.

#9 9 years ago

Yeah I installed the Tach Mod over the weekend, its pretty cool, adds a lot of bling to the table, I read your review on the mod wiggy07 in another thread about the mod, and I can see a few of the same issues you mentioned in your write up, screw holes in the mounting bracket don't line up with the holes on the machine, have to be re drilled, also needing a longer screw to put back the test car sign when you have to over lap the end of the test car sign with the mounting bracket, and mine seems to get caught on 8 rpm's and dosent really come back till the next ball starts, that's something im hoping with time it might iron itself out, but I definatly have to check it out a little more.. all in all its a good mod and really adds to the look of the table.

#10 9 years ago

I posted a fix for the SDTM problem here:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/tech-help-with-nascar-ball-shoots-out-of-garage-sdtm#post-1943335

I'll do a cleaner installation and report back in a month or so with long-term results.

#11 9 years ago

It's a beautiful fall day here, great time to take out the engine and give it a good cleaning:

engine1.jpgengine1.jpg
engine2.jpgengine2.jpg

I noticed that after doing a "complete shopout" the game was getting dirty after a few dozen games. I'm pretty sure this was the cause, as the engine was filthy. It was much easier to clean outside the game.

Now I have to do the other one...

#12 9 years ago

When I shopped mine, I pulled everything and cleaned it, including the trough, test car assy, subway etc. I also find it easier to do it outside the cabinet. - Barry

Some shots of the process....

#13 9 years ago

That's pretty much what I did to mine, but I got lazy and didn't take out the "engines" the first time - big mistake. TZ is easy to shop out compared to NASCAR.

#14 9 years ago

Can you even add mods to it? I mean other then the Tachometer mod what is there? Doesn't seem room to be able to put like a model Nascar on there

#15 9 years ago
Quoted from PinBiohazard:

1:43 scale models fit perfectly, just a tiny bit bigger than the test car.

has anyone here ever got all the champ 1 letters??

#17 9 years ago
Quoted from whisper:

has anyone here ever got all the champ 1 letters??

Yes. the wizard mode after champ1 is great!!
Had a 226M score
I love my Nascar !!

#18 9 years ago

Wow that's cool, I played a few games tonight and could only get 3 champ letters, that might be around my average, that's why I was asking, that's a great score Pascal-Pinball, im no where near that, haven't had the game all that long my best is around 88Mil and some change, I like the way this game scores high in certain parts, with fast tracks and hard racing, love mode bonus and how the drops are so important in this game, every one who comes around really gets into it, because every one has a chance, and I love that about the game, coz all my mates are non pin heads and you can tell there not really having that much fun on the other machines, because there not quite sure what to do, but this one a quick explanation on how to advance positions during the race by hitting the hauler truck, and hit the car, and they can figure out more as they go on, and they get hooked!!!! glad theres finally a club, coz this game rocks!!!!!!

Anyone found a replacement coil sleeve that works for the garage? Coil Sleeve Stern 545-5847-01. It is a long one. Read about using 545-5847-00 in a Lord of the rings but not confirmed.
Thank You
Andy

#20 9 years ago

FYI.
Pinball Life pbl-03-7067-6 2-11/16" Flanged Coil Sleeve works in place of Stern 545-5847-01 for Grand Prix garage. It is just a bit longer but clearance is ok in this application.

#21 9 years ago

One of the "best bang for the bucks" today. Great Lawlor layout and the family and guest love playing it.

#22 9 years ago

I'll be installing my new car tonight, if my vision pans out. Pics to follow.

I made a mindmap for Nascar's rules - this game is deep! Here are some icons and abbreviations:

= extra ball opportunities
magic wand = goal needed to reach wizard mode
hourglass = timed mode
JP = Jackpot
+JP = Increases Jackpot
SJP = Super Jackpot
MB = Multiball

I'll check this out tonight and add some score values. I'd like to know where the big points are, for league play.

swampfire, thx for the write up of the rules. Really appreciate it.

7 shots right orbit for hard racing is not 100% correct. you have to light the right orbit by shooting the right ramp first

I also think that you light the left orbit for speed shots by hitting the left orbit fisrts, with others wordt, you have to shoot the left orbit twice in a short time (it's speedshots right)

Thanks, I was trying to figure that out!

#31 9 years ago

One thing that bugs me is that I always see the same 4 scanner awards. And the right column is always a copy of the left! Do I have an older ROM? How can I tell the version of code I'm running? There's no label on the game ROM.

EDIT: I got my code versions by disabling fast boot. I'm on 4.50 CPU and 4.00 DISPLAY, which I think are the latest.

#32 9 years ago

OK, I learned some more things this morning:

The game randomly picks 3 of the garage modes to light Mode Bonus for a CHAMP1 letter. You can see which ones by using the INSTANT INFO. Use the spinners to get one of these lit.

As Pascal said, the right orbit must be qualified by the right ramp. The first time it's easy to advance the right orbit, because there's no timer. But after you've played Hard Racin' once, you can only advance the right orbit by hitting a right ramp - right orbit combo.

Stacking Speed Shots with Multiball is very lucrative.

Hitting the right ramp repeatedly awards double hauler miles. Are there any other combos?

Always shoot an orbit if its light is flashing.

#33 9 years ago

more stuff:

the correct name for "main" multiball is "race multiball"

you also don't have to shoot the left ramp 3 times to start that multiball...

lock ball 1 on the left ramp
push the left flipper button (to open the pit) and plunge the second ball, this will be loades into the pit and you got 100.00 points. good thinking!
with ball 3 you shoot the left ramp to start multiball.

#34 9 years ago

Thanks Pascal. I was trying to think of how to diagram the "Good Thinking" trick and I gave up. I think notes will always be needed to complement the diagrams.

#35 9 years ago

Thanks guys for taking the time to document the rule set!!!

Can anyone please explain collecting CHAMP letters please???? thanks

#37 9 years ago

you get CHAMP letters after :

- hard racin'
- speed shots
- road course
- victory laps
- sometimes with "mode bonus"

I am not sure:
- scanner award
- after all the garage modes (super party multiball)

#38 9 years ago

today I had something "weird"
- I locked the first ball
- I locked the second ball by opening the pit with the left flipper: "good thinking"
- Then, I plunge the 3th ball and the machine opens the pit and locked the ball and say something like this: "you rather be Lucky than good"
- Then multiball starts...

anyone has seen this before?

I just picked one of these up last week and I am really liking it. I did a partial teardown and really cleaned her up good and she's so much faster and more fun than I ever expected. And the clear coat on this sumbitch is outstanding. In comparison to every other Stern I've owned, this deck almost feels like a Bally/Williams a diamond a plate. Totally unexpected.

Rules are solid and keep you on your toes. More here than meets the eye...but ya know what? Speaking of, this machine is very pleasing to the eyes. Artwork (playfield) isn't as good as the classics, but it has a cartoon feel and excellent color and vibrancy. They coulda photo-shopped this one very poorly and didn't. True Lawlor style if not actually classic art. Wonder how many people even realize this?

Playing the game: I'm hoping this thread will have good conversation, and I'll withhold some comments on game play for the time being. Wouldn't want to gush too much in the HONEYMOON phase - -(but I do really like it so far).

Question:
Can anyone please chime in on how they've tweaked their R-A-C-E letter achievement? For MB progress? When I received the game it seemed I could get MB multiple times per game and it was just too easy. But after setting to factory "Hard" with absolutely nothing spotted and having to hit the target banks every time to qualify a letter, I'll now play multiple games without even getting MB. So I'm looking for the sweet spot. I don't think MB should be a gimme, but it should be easier than I've made it.

#44 9 years ago

ik have 2 RACE letters lit at the start of a game, and I have to hit the drops to light more RACE letters.
after the first multiball It is a bit harder.
But maybe I will set it harder...

And I'm just leaving pit road and coming on track with your car....I mean pin. Thanks for bringing it over yesterday. While sprucing it up last night I broke the mounting point for the "Use left flipper to enter pit road when flashing" sign. It's only mounted to the ramp plastic and it had been broken and reglued at some point. I repaired it with a small stainless steel strip, only took about 20 min. and is now better then new. Replacing all the gi bulbs with frosted led but will leave the inserts as is for the time being. First mod to go on will be the speaker panel decal then the tach then ??? maybe some Comet led strips.

4 years ago on a SWELTERING Florida August day I put 24 laps on Daytona doing the Richard Petty Experience. My car only had a 650hp "B" motor so I was limited to 6300rpm but it was still good enough for a fastest lap of 160mph. Back then you had to follow your instructor and he set your speed but you were still in the car by yourself. Now the instructor rides with you and tells you when to go faster. What a bummer, nothing like being in a race car by yourself. It was soooo hot in the car sweat was poring into my mouth and rivers were running down my sides. I came away with a whole new respect for what those NASCAR guys do.

I bought the 2 camera on board video and added my buddies footage from the infield, did some editing and added titles for lap, time, speed etc. Turned out WAY cool.

I did the RPDE at Daytona the week before the 2012 Daytona 500, was great except I kept getting the yellow light down the back straight for getting too close to the lead car. Took some restraint to not pass the guy, had to realise I wasn't racing my dirt car.

Fun aint it. How many laps? I did it before they resurfaced the track and in between turn 3-4 there was a dip that jerked my head sideways every lap. I don't know how the drivers in a real race, in traffic and 30-40mph faster then me could handle it. I know they have side head guards on their seats and I didn't but man hitting that just messed me all up.
