Apollo 13 strikes me as unique. The theme is, for all intents and purposes, based on historic non-fiction. (Technically, the theme is based on the movie, but the movie is directly linked to a real historic event.) Are there any other machines like this?

For the sake of discussion, we could expand the discussion to include people of historical importance, for which I could think of Mata Hari and Elvis.

My wife suggested that somewhat should create an "Einstein" pinball machine. I don't know about the appeal of that, but I'm willing to bet that Neil deGrasse Tyson would offer unlimited free consultation for anyone willing to attempt such an endeavor.

FIRE!
Captain Fantastic

A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Seriously though, I saw some custom pins based off of real businesses. Those count, even though they were one-offs?

Linked a few I think are applicable...

World Fair
World Cup Soccer

similar topic was discussed on RPG, only singular people.
Like Dolly Parton, Evel K, Attila the Hun, Roy Clark
But if you include groups or event
need to include all the music groups GnR, AC/DC etc
and Harlem Globetrotters
what about TV shows Charlie Angels or $6 Mil Man
OR games named after Cities or States San Francisco or St.Louis or Oklahoma or Texas
Blackwater 100 or Indy 500
Space Station, Friendship 7 or Space Shuttle or Skylab

I500.
Its a great day for racing, and a great day for pinball.

Elvira is certainly fun, but to me it is an actress playing the role of Elvira and hence is fiction, just like Demolition Man is fiction, even though Stallone is a real person.

World Poker Tour. Gotta love a machine with Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten.

NASCAR

High Speed (Steve Ritchie has said: "It was based on a true story. I was actually chased by the cops at 146 mph in my 1979 Porsche 928." ) - from ipdb.org

Those are real TV shows, but the shows are works of fiction (e.g. the theme of three gorgeous female spies or a cyborg man are fiction).

I just remembered Mario Andretti.

#13 9 years ago

Frank Thomas' Big Hurt. About to become a Hall of Famer as well.

Harlem Globetrotters are real people even though their games aren't. Just seen this is already here.

I have to add this :>>>>> If you're going to mention Elvis, shouldn't Jimi Hendrix be in the mix as well, which brings me to this question, has there ever been a Hendrix pinball machine?, and if not, WHY NOT??

Mata Hari.

Verne's World is based on the works of Jules Verne.

If no Hendrix pinball machine was made, why even mention him?

Most all of the games built during WWII fall into this category.

That is interesting to me. It would seem that pinball machines moved away from being reflections of our real lives and towards escapism.

Patriotism was rampant during the war. The link I posted above was for Victory Games. These days, you support the troops, but it's perfectly acceptable to not support the war. Back then, everybody supported everything about the war. They were all in. Both of my parents signed up as soon as we got involved. It was a much different world back then.

I could always be wrong, but I currently believe that Gottliebs 1956 "Fair Lady" and 1966 "Mayfair" were based on the "My Fair Lady" production.

NGG theme is based on "Caddyshack". Caddyshack had a great group of people as cast members.

Quoted from phishrace:

Back then, everybody supported everything about the war.

Not everybody. Most did. But not everybody. Jeanette Rankin voted against both WW1 and WW2. She was the first woman in Congress. And a pacifist.

The Amish as a whole probably opposed it.

There were some who thought we had no business in Europe, but most supported war with Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Curious what the first pinball title made after WWII. Was it a Bally?

They could make a new pinball machine based on AirAsia Flight QZ8501. You'd launch the ball and begin playing a game, but at some point the ball would disappear under the playfield and never come back up.

Coronation (Gottlieb, 1952). "This game was released in anticipation of the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II which took place June 2, 1953."

Lord Howard Hurtz, who the F... are you?

Royal Rumble and the upcoming WWE table. Tip toeing the line between fact and fiction, perhaps.

But

Wasn't Gottliebs 1954 "Dragonette" based on the show Dragnet? Or vice versa? Just the Bare facts Mam!!

#48 9 years ago

Comet is technically based on a real life rollercoaster, does that count?
