Does anyone know why a single nail seems to be set under every plastic cover of my game? It's a Williams Big Deal and I want to pull these out since they are touching the artwork under the plastic covers, but can only assume it was to add support?

Yes, they used a nail to keep the pf plastics up, especially if there is a kicker or just a 10pt contact.
