I Krylon clear-coated an Earthshaker and a Count Down backglass a while back. The flaking is minimal on both, but I do have a bit of touch-up work to do. The lazy and cheap side of me wants to use shades from the hundreds of different nail polishes my wife has lying around (probably won't have to do much, if any, mixing to match colors). Any reason that this would be a bad idea?

It won't work because it's not translucent enough.

Thanks - I knew it sounded too easy. Anyone recommend a brand of paint that will have the correct translucense?

You are talking about one of the most difficult repairs in the pinball world.

Createx has lot's of translucent paints.

Thanks again. It's all just specks missing here and there and not large areas otherwise I wouldn't tackle this.

Post some pictures as you go and good luck!

What about for scratched translites? My JM has a nearly flawless translite, but one of the LEDs I put behind it was uncapped, and put a small hairline scratch in the lower corner, where there's only dark blue. So while very small I notice it when I look. I thought of just putting a thin sliced blue painters tape over it, to mute the light.

Would a thin point sharpie in the crack work? (Tee hee).

A lot of time, just removing the lamp from behind the scratches looks great.

Don't you have to heat cure createx ,can you do this on a back glass without hurting it? Will it cure without heat? Just wondering.

Don't heat it.

Just let it air dry.

I was going to create a thread for this, but it fits here. ...

I landed a Solar Ride last week, it's been stored in a shed for 18 years (!!)

At first look, the backglass looks sweet (from the outside anyway)

But when you turn the power on, you can see the coloured areas have deteriorated.

If you touch the colours (on the back) the colour basically rubs off on your finger. So ... obviously don't do that!

The silver area is mint. No flaking, nothing.

Anybody have any great ideas?

TIA!

I'd coat it with Triple Thick.

Don't put bulbs behind the bare spots, or even put some colored lighting gels (from Guitar Center or DJ Supply) over the bare spots.

Sounds like a plan Vid!

Is this the stuff? Found some in NZ.

http://www.krylon.com/products/triplethick-crystal-clear-glaze/

This is the one we have in the States, and it runs $3.99 USD.

I see the Deco-art stuff says USA made, so might it be the same stuff?

This page is in your neck of the woods and has exactly what you need:

Lots of YouTube videos on this technique and also in Clay's This Old Pinball videos. I'm not that experienced, but I think I would pre-emptively do this for all old backglasses. Its cheap, easy to do, and secures that old paint really well.

Cool, I've found that stuff for $19 NZ. It's always dearer for niche products like that here in NZ, I doubt they'd sell much of it so they put a good markup on it when they import it.

$19 is cheaper than finding a good backglass! I'll give it a shot!

Thanks for the info, Vid. Appreciate it.

Remember: you want the Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear not the Krylon Crystal Clear.

I only spray flaky backglasses.

If a backglass has survived all these years and still looks tight, I don't mess with it, as it was obviously properly made and stored.

Don't try washing or cleaning old backglasses on the ink side.

I use acrylic paint to touch up translites.
