I think with a thorough cleaning the mylar pieces won't be as visible. Dirt builds up at the edges and makes them stand out. I'm afraid you will lose a lot of paint from that playfield if you try to remove the mylar.

I would thoroughly clean it up and then cover it with a playfield protector to level things out.
