The coil/plunger bracket is connected to the rest of the popper only with weld on one side. It's open on the other three sides. Often this bends over time and opens up. You can tweak it pretty easily little by little and test. Small adjustments change the exit quite a bit and you'll be able to find one that works.
I wouldn't go with a stronger coil. This is a somewhat common problem, but slightly more common lately is it firing too hard and bouncing right out of the wireform. You don't want that!
