Quoted from Decat:

So for those Popeye owners/appreciaters, a few questions:

1-4: fortunately everything has worked fine and as far as I know the flipper coils are stock
5: backglass is definately my fav part
6: anytime Popeye talks under his breath are my fav quotes
7: start of multiball is the best animation when popeye punches through the door slot and then flexes
8: toughest shot is the upper playfield extra ball shot
9: satisfying shot is when I actually hit the upper playfield extra ball shot
10. I toggle between spot item and spot animal skill shots

Quoted from Decat:

So for those Popeye owners/appreciaters, a few questions:
1) Have you had to modify or replace the ball trough optos?

I installed the GLM 7-opto trough boards. It's a no-brainer for all of the B/W Widebody games. Awesome product.

2) Have you had to fine tune the ball lock to correctly register ball locks, and what method did you use?

Yes. Pulled the Bluto trough, cleaned everything, bent one or two of the switch activator wires a bit. It's a little fiddly.

3) Have you had to add support to the underside of the animal diverter to get it properly leveled?

No. Mine has always worked fine. I would love to cut off the last 4-5 inches of the blue ramp and replace it with a wireform. Can't see the top of the left outlane area at all. Horrible design flaw.

4) What strength coils do you have in the main flippers and the mini flippers?

Mains are 29's. Can't remember what the minis use.

5) What is your favorite art detail (piece) on the machine?

I like the boat apron a lot.

6) What is your favorite audio clip?

"What a handsome brute."

7) What is your favorite DMD animation?

The Bluto Multiball start with Popeye's fist coming through the peephole.

8)What is the toughest shot for you to hit consistently?

The Swee'Pea lanes are almost impossible.

9) What is your most satisfying shot?

The Swee'Pea Extra Ball shot

10) What skill shot do you go for consistently?

Light Lock

Looking great IMO. Love the blue DMD and topper. The figs are a nice added touch on the PF as well. I am a huge fan of coin taker back box lighting kits.

All in all you gave this pin the royal treatment.

Enjoy

I love the mods you made! I picked up a HUO with 899 plays on it for $1300. Your pix just sealed the deal on a color DMD. Wait till my wife sees these. Thanks in advance for pushing her overboard. Uhgugugug.

I would have never guessed when that game left the shop you would have done what you have to it. I can say without a doubt that is an awesome looking Popeye!

I have had mine for quite a few years now, still enjoying the game. So much fun and quite underrated game. Maybe its to challenging for some. High score on mine is over two billion. Good job on your machines. I see lots of love was put into them. This game is pretty much the house favorite. Also I have the color DMD. More like the cartoon. Popeye always makes me smile.

Popeye was my favorite cartoon growing up and now my daughter watched it.

I'd love to be able to get one in great condition for the family

I am having a blast playing mine. It's not going anywhere. So glad I didn't listen to all of the Popeye bashing. Thanks goes out to Russ Myers for letting me play his a while back. If I hadn't played his I would have never bought one.

Ill throw this on here too.
I recently purchased popeye and I am looking to upgrade my ROM set.
I have the GQ 4x4 so I can burn them, I just need the files.
For game ROM, I see IPDB has a LX-5 export ROM. But there is no sound ROM upgrades listed there. I had read, I believe in this thread although I am not sure, but definitely on pinside that you can get an upgraded sound ROM with more callouts and waves crashing in attract mode.
Thanks.
