My location offered me $500 bonus to bring in a premium instead of pro.

thats a good amount of plays but you said that the owner is a pinball player so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. I have that at my location as well but as they get busy and such that will show in the coinbox for sure.

    Quoted from dannunz:

Are you asking were the location is or were inside the game sits?

Specifically where the location is. If it's somewhere like an arcade with several pinball machines, people may enjoy it. Otherwise it may be a good idea to just get the Pro.

It's in a retro arcade inside a very busy mall. Only my pinball machine in their.

Game Underground by any chance? I remember seeing WWFRR did pretty well in its first week there.

    Yup did you play it?

Yeah! It played pretty well there, and I'm also going there on a semi-monthly basis for their Smash 4 tourneys.
In that case the Premium may be a good pick. There's plenty of people who may be impressed with it, plus it's based on a popular theme and there's many arcade goers who go there as well.

I think I am going to put my very nice JM in their as well this weekend.

As said, every location is different, but...I've never heard of a JM on location that wasn't an absolute stinker in earnings. Only been operating for the last two years, so take that with a grain of salt.

Looking at your collection, I'm pretty confident that any other game you have would do better, especially given that it is in a mall and thus probably relies on casual players.

Well that is a bummer to hear. I just spent the past 3 weeks doing a full tear down and refurb of my JM in order to get it ready for location.

I am surprised to hear it does poorly as I find it to be very fun to play from a players POV and figured that casual people would like the glove toy.

It's an awful theme, and "casual people" would have NO IDEA what to do with that glove. They probably would never even figure out the game has four buttons. Not surprised it bombs on location.

    #61 4 years ago

I would not accept the $500 gift as the barcade owner will believe he has a say in keeping or not this game. Imagine the guy really loves it while the game does not earn much, he will insist on keeping it.

So a slightly improved % on earnings could be a solution even if...

    Quoted from LesManley:

If you forgo the $500 and take an increased 10% as some people suggest, you do realize that even at a full $1.00 per play, it will take 17,000 full dollar plays to recoup that cost if you paid $1,700 more for the premium for example.

You can still expect your premium to have a higher resale value than the Pro. So the difference is actually less than $1700 (but you do have to spend that extra amount of money initially).

    #62 4 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

    It's an awful theme.

I dont buy the theme excuse. Lots of crappy themes can do well on route.

I can see the glove being misunderstood by casual people.

    #63 4 years ago

Sorry whysnow, didn't mean to discourage you. Maybe if you have a lot of hardcore players, it would do better? And try throwing on a Matrix backglass for everyone else.

I haven't operated one, but I've long thought that I would own one. Now with more of an eye toward operating...I'm staying away (just from what I've heard anecdotally)...or, if I do get one, it would just be for something to have at home.

    #64 4 years ago

I think if you were to put in a new table Metallica or Tales from the Crypt would be the best ones to put in. Aggressive games, fairly deep, appealing themes to the arcade's demographic

    #65 4 years ago

Just to pile on what some others are saying. Accepting the 500 is giving the location owner a degree of ownership/control over YOUR game. Until you know the owner well enough I'd keep the business side of the relationship as clear and simple as possible.

    #66 4 years ago

i went with the pro for location, i couldn't justify all the extra maintenance between the pro and the premium, the cost, as well as having a 'collectable' machine on location to get trashed out. i will always purchase pros for locations, premiums would be my home machines.

no worries. It will still go out. I bought the game because I like it. So far I have a rule that I only put out games that I like.

Aside from South Park (which still has some redeaming qualities in my book) that holds true. We shall see. If JM is a stinker then it will just come back home where I will enjoy it.

    #68 4 years ago

JM is a great game with easy to hit ramps. The only thing you need the glove for is to lock balls. But it's a very fun game. Not sure if it would do well or not.

    #69 4 years ago

I may put metallica in their only because their is not another one out in the wild in all of new England.

    #70 4 years ago
    Quoted from ryanwanger:

I have a completely unfounded theory about GOT...
Many (most) recent Sterns have an obvious thing to shoot for (Sparky, the wrestling ring, drops in Mustang, disc in Tron, Iron Monger, etc) which is great for newbies. The GOT Pro does not have this. It has complex rules that require deep understanding and ball control skills to go with it.
I think putting a Premium on location makes a lot of sense because newbies are going to feel really rewarded by getting to the upper playfield. "...and then I got it up there and started fighting the dragon!"
Without that upper playfield - I don't think there will be any obvious and rewarding moments on the GOT pro for casual players.

The other side of your theory ... Newbies/general public don't know what "deep rules" are, they want to hit something and get 4 balls flying around the playfield ASAP. Getting to multiball is an achievement for most, and the easier you can figure it out/start it the better for a location game.

I played GOT Pro at Expo, only got a few games on it, but it seemed to be a little confusing at first, even for a more experienced player. Choose a house. What's a house? No idea. Don't watch the show. What's Bannister? The handrail on a staircase? Don't know. Don't watch the show. Where's multiball? Don't know. No sparky to hit. See what I mean ...?

More experienced players/enthusiasts will drop a few more coins in so they can explore the game more. But newbies will walk away and play something else.

I also had one on location and it was awful. The pinball community for sure enjoys the game, including myself. I never saw a casual player give it a try. The theme is such a bust.

My MET Pro is still gaining in earnings as people figure out the rule set.

That said, Kiss Pro is crushing on route as well, even with it's immature code.

It seems you have gradually gravitated to all NEW games? I assume the theme is what you have found to be the most important thing for your spot?

Theme is definitely the number one thing for my location. with so many casual players, you need the theme to pull them in. They aren't reading Pinside like they should I do not have a problem trying other games for sure. I have had several different games over the years.

I should also mention, I do like a lot of the games I have today personally, not all of them would be ones I would have or keep. Growing my location has been an interesting ride.

    #79 4 years ago

I'm going to bring my Metallica pro to Game underground Saturday. See how it does. It's got a color Dmd and heavily modded.

    #80 4 years ago

I'd tell them for $1000 I'd bring an LE.

The latest update defaults to the Starks and might spot you a mode start as well unless you hold down an extra button when starting the game. It's supposed to be more casual-friendly.

This works really well with the other op across town. Eastside gets the newest Sterns and the other op gets the classic Bally / WMS "A" titles. It works because they have two completely different client bases and it makes for better variety for everyone, best of all worlds.

Always! I'll nudge, but I'm not going to hurt your machine. The worst that will happen is that I'll wear out the coin slot as I dump money into it. I'm very excited to have a MET on location only 15 minutes from work. I'll be working on getting my initials up on that color DMD.

Make sure when your their that you tell Jammi the owner that he needs more pinball machines in his arcade. As of rt now he is on the fence to let me leave Metallica their after GOT premium comes in.

You may see TFTC in their at some point. White water is being sold to finance GOT LE.

    #95 4 years ago
    Quoted from dannunz:

Dave what other game would you like to see on location?

Well I'm obviously pretty excited about MET

This is a great area for pinball with Lanes & Games along with Pinball Wizard. But both of them are kind of a drive away. PW is actually easier to get to a lot of times just because of traffic going towards L&G. Between them they have a lot of games, new and old.

The problem with L&G is size. They had a MET for a while, but newer games pushed it out. They can't have dozens of games. The niche there is that Mike almost always has the latest games, and he keeps them in VERY good playing condition.

Pinball Wizard has tons of games, including classics. A longer drive, but they swap out games enough, so there is probably something I have not played recently on the floor. But so many more games means that sometimes maintenance can take longer to fix issues.

So between these two ends, there is a middle that can be taken up by "lesser" games. And by lesser, I mean MET, Transformers Pro, High Roller Casino, Demolition Man, maybe even trying some older Bally games. After getting through a rotation like that you will learn all about what sells at that location. Do folks like LEDs? Do they reject classics or love and play them? Are the 90s the spot to be? It will take a few turns to narrow down the kind of games your customers want to play. Your main client may be kids, or it might be grown men coming in to have some fun. Only time can tell that.

    #96 4 years ago

I would love to put 5 or 6 games in their. That could happen if the pinball machines start to make them more money than some of their video and driving games. It's up to you guys coming out and playing them.

If their is enough interest it would be cool to start doing tournaments or get on the New England tournament sced. But I would need someone to run that when the time comes.

Metallica Pro may be the best machine of this generation.

    #98 4 years ago

We have 7 games in a location and I'm almost finished with the 8th that will go in. The current list is: Whirlwind, Bride of Pinbot, Hook, Diner, Super Mario Bros, Ice Fever, Laser Ball. Police Force is about to go in. System 11's are crushing the others. We aren't making much $ wise, but % of play, the System 11's are now getting all of the love. We've only been in there ~2.5 months, so the data isn't all that great. Mario started out as the #1, but has cooled off a little. It's the one kids play, when they play. Nothing is an absolute dog though. I have tournaments that have random games picked, so players come to practice everything. I do know that we are capped at 8 machines there, 4 are mine, 4 are my friend's. When it's time to get a bigger earner I know which one will be leaving.

I didn't mean to offend. I 100% agree with your assessment. I am jumping for joy that one is going on location near me. Both locations I mentioned in my post have Tron, and they keep it on location because it earns well. One of those locations had a MET Pro (non LED), and it is gone because their other games out earned it. Maybe it was just simply the fact that it looked a bit dull with incandescent bulbs next to Star Trek. I'm not sure. But I do know that if it had earned its keep, it would still be there.

And seriously, I love MET. I can't wait to play it Sunday. I probably should have said that better.
