Let's dive in at the deep end

First time I have set my hands on restoring one of these and probably picked one of the more difficult ones according to some of the posts about first time PBMs.
I have download and printed loads of reading material and just reading up on stuff.
I am competent in soldering and wiring and troubleshooting electronics (been following Joe's classic YT channel

This is the order I will be doing this someone chime in if this is bad

1. Clean, repair, recap, new connectors on all the boards get rid of that monstrous battery

CPU Board 1B1110/1 got quite a few mods on it so need to research what they are for
Driver board 1B1111/0
Power supply 1B1109/5
Sound Board 1B1146/2
Display Board 1B1104/5 can't see these in any documentation found 1B1104/0
Re the display boards what are they LED or something between HVGD and something else?
Flipper Programming board
Lamp effects board

2. Clean and check the transformers and wiring
3. Restore cabinet to best I can
4. restore, repair and clean the play-field which is in FAB condition and looks like it hasn't had much playtime (I think) The hardest bit will be trying to replace/fix two of the plastics as they are damaged but scouring the internet on a daily basis.
5. Restore the back glass but may try and find a professional to do it.
6. New legs
7. Need to source a lock plate
8. source some 10p and 50p coins so can be played like it used too (yup no about free-play) What was the middle coin slot used for?
9. Enjoy playing it (seems a long time off but I don't want to rush this)

Mods if I have posted incorrectly or done something wrong then please delete the post and let me know as I have a copy of everything and will try again after your advice

Thank you for the comments, cleaning the PCBs this weekend just need to work out the mods done on the CPU board and what they are. I will post in the general forum for advice

OMG CaptainNeo your linked post is going to help me so much and so looking forward to the journey I am so tempted to rush it to play it but know that I just need to take it easy
Mines seems to be in a lot better condition compared to yours
The only issue I have is that the vacu-formed play-field plastics that I have some are damaged but been looking for a few days now and found nothing on the internet except for a post showing how to create new vacu-formed plastics so may have to go down that route

Step 2

Physically inspected and cleaned all the boards to check for any issues.

Power Board
The previous owner decided to replace the 68ohm 3w resister with a 33ohm 1w by the looks of it
Fuses are all overrated so will replace them as a matter of course and hope they weren't put in to resolve an issue

CPU board
All ok as far as I can see
Was the last owner just a lazy arse or are the socketed chips done like that for a reason (pic 4)
Also the piggybacking of the 4078 I am assuming its part of the eprom mod as there is just 1 256kb plugged in there
Found some paperwork in the manual so assume that's all to do with the eprom mod as well?

Display boards
All ok

Driver board
All ok everything tests out re the scrs and trannys
What are the displays on these pins?

Sound board
Missing a 27pf cap at c5

Does anyone recommenced a one place for most electronic parts for these machines or just the usual RS types of places?

I have added them to my watch list as we are going to start on the play-field shortly and haven't see underneath all the plastics yet (gulp)

Step 3

Removed as much as we can from the play-field so we can clean it
The pop bumpers look fine no cracked or broken plastic
Removed the flippers and other stuff.

List of things to purchase so far

fuses
Legs
Ball plunger bumper
balls
flipper rubbers
4 of the standoffs that have the nut on top that screw into the play-field (some snapped when removing them so will have to drill them out)
2 of the red switches
one side of the back glass is missing the black trim
new chrome grab thing on the bottom of the back glass
2 solenoid springs

some of this stuff I think I have seen on eBay in a pack

Last pic is what I assume the play-field would have looked like when brand new It's a big difference and assume not something we can put it back too

It was the misses that to remove them to have a clear deck to clean and also clean everything that came off it as it was filthy.
It was easier to touch up paintwork around the wear around the inserts too without them in.

Troublesome parts to locate so far are
lock plate
red plastic switch assembly

apart from that finding and ordering parts as we go along

That's fair enough and you have a big lead on us so we are listening to what you say
There was one that was already out and the rest apart from a few nearly fell out when slight pressure was applied to the underside.
A lot of them were black on the underside so that was another reason we thought about removing them.
We are learning as we go along and sometimes with the smaller mistakes I say it's better to learn the hard way to make the lesson learn't well

Will have to wait and see about how they go back in later on and hope for the best and learn

Whoops don't like the reference saying only remove inserts that you are going to replace. Hopefully as they all came out very easily they will go back in (with the guide to hand) and still look good.

None of them are dished which is good, we have a really detailed pic of the play-field before we removed them so know exactly were they go too.
None need replacing either and the logos on them all are in good condition.

Another hard to find plastic bit and unsure what it is called
tried all the usual pinball places that stock parts.

Ok to the roll over switches, you say you have the wire ones as well so assuming that you have the original red ones if so do you have 2 of them?

Thanks for the info on the inserts (lesson learnt) and they did come out very easily. We have a couple of very good filed pics but have made a note of your info on some of them.

Step 4

Cabinet inside is finished, not sure if it was right to just white it all out our reasoning was that it's a dark place so the white would help in the future.
Coin door has been stripped cleaned and currently putting it back together

The weight for the 10p coin has holes drilled out and also a screw inserted to it so we assume this is just to get the weight right to accept the coin being inserted? The new 50p one looks unmolested so assume that was replaced a while ago and we can't work out why that was done but the old 10p one was left in.

We are enjoying this restoration and have a fair bit to go yet but looking forward to playing it.
Next will be the play-field top and bottom as we are just awaiting parts from various places.

Step 5

Preparing the PF with Novus 2.

Really happy with how Novus 2 has given the play-field a new lease of bling. It's not been easy on the the 2 index digits of each hand as they ache like crap now and still have the last few inches of the PF to do.
A big difference between the 2 as you can see. I just hope that the lifting of the PF that is happening on the joints of the PF will level out over time.

Will be waxing the PF a few times with Mothers Pure Brazilian Carnauba Wax hopefully tomorrow then we can move onto returning the PF hardware but we are still awaiting the delivery of the rubber set etc so hopefully next week

Still looking forward to getting it fired up and seeing what needs to be replaced or possibly coaxed into working on the electronic sides of things

We are enjoying it but it doesn't move fast enough for me I just want to play it BUT realise everything comes to those who wait

Step 6 or should I say Leg 6

New legs are on and it looks 100% better already I don't like the leg protectors personally but the er-indoors won the toss of the coin

Step 7

Play-field insert surrounds touched up and 5 coats of Mothers wax, tried to get a similar shot to before the play-field was cleaned and waxed.

Step 8

Removed the mylar, heat didn't work and neither did freeze spray, the only way I could stop it removing the paint was to do it at room temp very slowly and even then the green paint fared the worst

The inserts are really bad and were loose as hell and came up with the mylar, god knows how they got into that state anyone any ideas?

Step 8

Anyway the Locomotion is now ready for bulb and fuse replacements under the play-field and putting back all the stuff on the underside

All bulbs replaces and is awaiting parts from PinballMania (https://pinparts.co.uk/) for the final stage so should be up and running (if nothing else needs replacing) next week.
