Skimmed the topic. Looks great. This would work for arcades too, correct?

I've been thinking about creating a magnet board for quite some time, but this seems like a better option.
I think the best solution for the scrolling would be for it to push one game left every X seconds. That way its still a fairly static image. Just make sure it loops back on itself.
Thank you for the video. Are there a certain aspect ratios or size limits for the images. I'd be happy to create some to share. I think this is going to be a great addition to many game rooms.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just really excited about this project. Is that for the top image or score itself? How about the column background?
I have the images larger, but just wanted to post them together to make sure I was on the right track. Top images are 250 x 184 banners are 500 x 1024. Images displayed below are just layering the two images and cropping to 250 x 1024 as a sample. I'm wondering if I should make the actual top images a bit smaller to show a bit of the background.
Quoted from pezpunk:that looks really cool! you are definitely on the right track. in the app, the game title and the background are two separate images, though.
Yeah, mine are too. I just layered them for posting here. I can share the actual files, once I'd decided on a format I want to use. I the idea of using the marquee / backglass; but I'm wondering if there might be a compromise between the arcade and pinball where they are both stretched slightly to create a uniform look at the top. Is it possible to have a tap to switch between arcade and pinball? I just think it would be a cleaner look at the top for those using it for both.
Here is the actual top image for Tapper vs Congo:
Tapper (resized).pngCongo (resized).png
I will share all of my files. If we can agree on a few sizes perhaps we create a form just for those files.
Does the score entry screen use a different top image or is that the same as the main top image? That might change how I'd design these images.
Quoted from pezpunk:good. if you look at the scrolling video i posted upthread, at the beginning, you see four backglass images -- BH, STTNG, WOZ, and GB -- those are 250x184.
i kinda think Herg's logos look even better, though, because they're not as tall (just my opinion)
Sorry, I was not clear. I was referencing during the score entry screen. That's where I fear the full images may look out of place.
PS: Also I'll share this new one.
Yeah, that looks fine. I was just worried because it looked like the Twilight Zone one extended beyond the box and I didn't want to have these huge backglass images above the box.
I'll load my files wherever, but it might be better to wait until we have access, just so we can all do some testing with the files before sharing. Make sure our sizes are fairly standard.
PS: So I'm going in a totally different direction then I was planning for BSD. Although those .png logo top images sure do look good. I would assume most have already been made for emulators like hyperspin.
Quoted from aobrien5:First one looks great as a game title.
Want to get me those individual images so I can load them up? I do feel like just the logo would be better for the title, but I do like the background image.

I think I agree about the logos. I just downloaded the wheel packs from hyperlink. That should be most of the one's people will need, though I didn't see Gold Strike. That's one I will need to create for my own collection. Perhaps they just don't have many EMs. Anyway, if you send me a PM with your email address I can send you what I have for now.
PS: I think I'm going to create high scores for individual events in Track & Field. Right now I'm trying to focus on some of the arcade games that I think would be really fun to play multiplayer.
Quoted from aobrien5:They all look great. The only "problem" is that you can only see the tire mark for Frogger on the score entry pop up. Also, if the 100M Dash is scored on time, it's a problem, because you can't use decimals.
Can you tell how they are justified? I'll probably just invert the Frogger background. Those logos do look pretty sweet. I'm at a different PC now, but I'll be able to work on a few backgrounds tonight.
Yeah track might also not work since lower is better in the races. Can the scores order be inverted? Then we'd also need the ability to display decimals or even feet/inches.
Yeah, that moon has to go in BSD. It's too busy. I might just go the "lazy" route and just drip some blood down or make it all distressed white, almost like a headstone. Sometimes the simple solutions are the best. It kind of sucks because I spent more time adding the castle, wolf, bat, rat, etc. Things I think of when playing BSD. Oh well.
Quoted from aobrien5:Yeah, you're probably right. I do like what you did with the top of that image, though. What about a vertical of the castle like during attract mode? In blue, like the side art?
I was going to originally do a blue, purple, black, color scheme like the side art; but it just didn't look very good with my skills. I pretty much need to be able to find a clean image to be able to manipulate it. I'm not an artist, I basically just have the ability to use photoshop at an amateur level.
PS: I really wanted to so some of the Spooky games. I thought about doing TNA last night; but started working on SOF instead...LIONMAN! It's tough because there isn't really a good clean image to work with.
Yeah, my house is about 10 minutes from Spooky. It's amazing, living in the middle of nowhere that it's actually a bit of a pinball Mecca.
Quoted from herg:This one is a bit more busy than my other games, but I just couldn't pass up using that awesome artwork. Unfortunately, it only works for short screens (<768 px).
Here is one that's a bit longer if you want to try it out. It should crop decently for both the narrow and wider score entry display. We could also likely extend the sky to have a less busy section for the logo.
Yeah, Gold Strike is terrible. I was hoping to create something that gave the hint of a wedgehead...it was a fail. Congo looks better then I was expecting. I'll whip up a background for you Cleopatra. I'm thinking some papyrus.
Once we have the exact sizes we can always reformat the images. Perhaps change to a center justification on the score entry image. Is that size always consistent? I've been designing at 500px; but it's obviously closer to 425px or something like that. Is there a max size we's actually need to fill that space?
The other suggestion I'd have would be to perhaps consider eventually adding different formats to the numbers: high score, low score, decimals, win/loss record (I'd use it for my bubble hockey), etc. Some features like that could also extend the use of the app beyond just pinball/arcades.
I will help with art but I think we should hold off doing too much detail stuff until we know for sure the dimensions needed. Then perhaps we can create things at multiple sizes to fit various screens.
Generic minimalist bowling them, which would work for several EMs. We could also do an ally, for those with multiple bowling machines. I'll work on Metallica next. Metallica is one of those that could be really cool if it were made to a specific size. Then you could use some of Dirty Donnie's artwork, I might just start with something fairly generic.
Quoted from Jakers:Metallica would be a solid choice.
Quoted from Fifty:Bally Transporter
Tough to find clean images for this one.

lpeters82 feel free to send me some more pics.
What's posted here should be actual size.
The imaged I provided were 500 x 1024. In most of the testing I've done with others they have scaled to 250. If you know your screen resolution you can probably do some math to figure out the exact scale you'll need. If you want to guess and check I'd start out with a width of 625.
Quoted from pezpunk:The background images are not rescaled. The game logo images are rescaled to 250px width.
Sorry, I meant to say cropped. Basically they only display 250px of the image. I try to test the images to make sure they will still look decent when cropped. For example, Indiana Jones was originally on the right side of this image. I inverted and scaled the image so he would still be visible when cropped.
Quoted from Fifty:How do I get it so that the image doesn't tile? I only have 3 games. Each background is 500 x 1024.
Try this one out. It's resized to 625px.
Quoted from pezpunk:Correct, the size of the background image does not affect the width of the column. The column width is the screen width divided by the number of games, with a minimum width of about 265px. The score entry pop up is always about 435px wide.
I'm assuming you can choose to only display X games at a time and use the scrolling feature, correct?
EDIT: Never mind with a minimum width that answers my question.
Quoted from Chosen_S:Joust
I figure those with large arcade collections or MAME will be using this to track quite a few arcade games.
Quoted from aobrien5:CFTBL still seems a bit off
Yeah, whenever things aren't left justified they aren't going to work perfectly. I may need to rework that one.
Quoted from Fifty:I agree.
I wasn't near my 32" Samsung tonight so I decided to try my setup on my Samsung Tab8. I guess I'm not understanding how all of you are getting perfect images right across without having to resize every background image taken from Dropbox.
I'll be testing it, but I think the answer is that there isn't going to be a "perfect image". Something like a basic pattern would be good since it's just going to repeat. It's when we try to get fancy with images they are going to be cropped to your screen resolution divided by the total number of games that you have (with a minimum size slightly bigger then 250px). For many, we'll be able to size things so that they look good at that minimum size. The images that I've provided are 500px; so they will fill the entire score entry screen; which is 400 (something). If your screen resolution divided by the total number of games is under 500px they still should look fine. So...having said that there are going to be some cases where we might have to customize some images to fit specific sizes. I will try to create a test background with size markers on it so you can test what size you'll actually need.
EDIT: So here is a simple image you can use to test your resolution. Each line is 25px. Post this as your background and count the number of lines visible, multiply by 25, and that will give you your optimal image sizes. The right hand side of each red line is 100px.
EDIT AGAIN: I now see your having vertical issues. You need use images with a larger vertical size to fill the space.
If you post my image into your system, and take a few screen shots I will create custom images for you. Just send me an email tonight.
Quoted from Redketchup:we need more art for older game like classic bally and classic stern...
I just needed a reason to do this one. It crops pretty nicely around 250-270px, which should be in the range for most users.
