I picked up this game up about 8 months ago, the seller had a bunch of extra parts including a new playfield. This was going to be my first full restore, I've done playfield swaps, touch up and clear coating, but this was the full package this time.

Looks good beside the playfield wear.

I guess if you're going to give a playfield swap a try, AFM is a good pin to do it on. Straight forward and not overly crowded.

Good luck!

Very nice!!!! I'm about to embark on the same journey.

Where did you get the cabinet decals from? How was the quality? Did you do the dry method?

Phoenix arcade has high quality, true silkscreened ones. I use the dry method with tape hinge method on my restore in progress ( https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/afm-restore-alien-invasion). Never an issue **knocks on wood**. Looks great so far op. image.jpg

Went with the dry way also, wasn't too hard. A little nerve racking at first but no issues if proper planning is done

#15 5 years ago

Cabinet all back together with black powder coating of course

Looking good.

Nice !! Do not now how you cats do all this work. I offered my tech $1300.00 to just do a TOM playfield swap . His answer was no F#@*ing way .

#21 5 years ago

I don't know how you guys do it either. Very impressive. Looks great!

#22 5 years ago

All micro switchs were replaced with brand new ones

Thanks everyone, I do swaps way cheaper than 1300 bucks. That's highway robbery!

Anything under $2000 is a crazy bargain.

Are we talking just a straight swap? Or a swap with a rebuild in the mechanics?

Exactly what I want to do. Beautiful job!

#28 5 years ago

AFM restores, always a beautiful thing.

#30 5 years ago

I really like the colors you picked for the LED's, this game rocks LEDs and I like this one. Great choice to black it out-

#31 5 years ago

This is the treatment I have planned for my AFM, sans the cabinet redecal as my originals are pretty nice, including the blackout of the metal and the red ramps.

Nice work.

#32 5 years ago

This is very close to my WIP AFM restore - only 18months and counting

What LEDs did you use for the GI? Think i can see some UV in there...?

I couldn't afford the reclear on the Mirco, but i did replace the Red Ramps' flaps with the Pinbits steel ones. Used Red mirror Blades instead of Black. LED OCD in there with Comet Leds. The city backboard instead of the space version.

REALLY like the custom pop bumpers - good contrast to the Red ramps! What parts did you use?

You've tempted me to getting the rails powder-coated now... All other metal work is now black too.

#33 5 years ago

I've seen it in person and it's majestic.

I'm pretty sure the caps came off tmnt, I ordered them from marcos, and took the belt sander to them because the lip was way to long

Looks awesome tdiddy! My interactive Stroke of Luck hole light would be some more icing on the cake. Stop by and see me at the Cleveland Pinball Show in a few weeks.

Absolutely gorgeous work. Well done and worth all the adulation you receive.

#41 4 years ago

Hey, looks beautiful!

Did you replace the SOL metal popper? I did, and now it's not quite as consistent as it used to be returning to the top of the left flipper.

I finally, nearly, finished my restore... thanks for the idea on the green bumper caps - i like them.
