Hello all. This will be my first restoration. I have no issues with most of the stuff like wood working, painting, cab work, playfield work but will be a little out of my element when it comes to the board work. The table is pretty rough, lots of bare spots, lots of dings and scratches on the cab. The backbox displays are just hanging there so im pretty sure they will all need to be replaced. The backglass is also trashed. Hopefully the boards will be in good shape. I haven’t turned the table on yet, i need to check the power supply out and give it a good look over. Let me know what has worked for you guys when starting out with a table in this condition. Thanks

Did you find this on FB about 18 months ago? I recall seeing one...

My buddy txt me about a wk ago about seeing it on the fb marketplace, it was only about 1/2 hr from my house.

The table has been stored for the last few yrs. They said that it turns on, sets there in attract mode but would not kick a ball. As you can see in the one pic all the fuses were gone. I pulled them all but the 2.5 amp solenoid fuse was literally broke into pieces. Thanks for all the input so far.

#17 4 years ago

So i did a little testing yesterday evening and started at the power supply. I installed new fuses and unplugged all out going connections from the board. I checked out the power cord and wiring leading up the the transformer mainly because the power cord is just a brown extension cord spliced in. Upon inspection i found that there is no on/off switch. The bottom cab panel has been replaced with some nasty fake brick panel and the switch removed and spliced together.
So after i replaced the power cord with a new one that had a ground prong i plugged it in. So far so good. So at this point the only thing that has power is the transformer and the power board. I start checking voltage on the fuses. All the voltages are nearly the same. 58-72 volts on all fuses and i checked some of the pins and they tested the same. I just did some fuse work on my firepower and I know this isnt right. Whats my next move? Check out the transformer and or its bad?

Quoted from frunch:

Are you sure your meter was set to check dc volts? Where were you placing the probes when testing for voltages?

Yep. I was wrong. But i do believe the transformer is bad. I took all the dc and ac readings on my firepower board and then went out to the AP to get those readings. They were considerably different from each other.
I wanted to eliminate either the power supply or the transformer so i installed the power supply board in my firepower. All readings were good. Looks like i have a bad transformer. Readings are as follows
AP. FP.
F1. 153.6. 88
F2. 10.5. 38.4
F3. 5.3. 17.8
F4. 10.5. 38.4

#21 4 years ago

Thanks for that write up. I was going off my FP schematic. I did take readings off of the rectifiers but didnt include them. The solenoid rectifier has voltages of 10.5 then splits to 5.1. The lamp rectifier has an input voltage of 5.5 and splits to 2.3. I will go out and test each lead off of the transformer.

#24 4 years ago

I pulled the transformer today and all is well. It checked all good to the schematics.

I plan on changing the rectifiers and i did read over Vids bulletproofing guide. Looks easy and cheap enough so ill be doing that also.

#28 4 years ago

At this point i went ahead and labeled, took lots of pics and pulled all the wiring and boards. I took the boards to get checked out. As you can see from the pics, lots of yellow and black streaks On the inner backbox.

Started a little cabinet clean up today. I tried to use simple green to clean the inside smoked filled panels but it didn't cut it. I had to use zep cleaner. That worked like a charm
Im also starting to make the backbox side stencil.

Nice
Anyway you can make copy’s or scan the stencils. That would be a nice tool to have for cabinet restore

Iv been wanting to learn how to do that, not really sure how to take a picture and make a vectored file from it. Ill see what i can do.

#35 4 years ago

Well I noticed I forgot to cut out one of the black squiggly things in the bottom right. Had to fish out the stencil from the pile. All good now.

Quoted from Theo_Ioannis:

I have looked at your backbox artworks.....for me, black should be painted last.....
First blue base, then red and then black over red/blue
I think red over blue is difficult..........Good luck!

I have black going down first. Then red then the black details inside the head.

I will be picking up my boards in the next couple days. They are currently in a Gorgar running through test mode and getting some plays on that table. So if you are local to Lafayette Indiana and are able to go to Main Street Amusements you can play Gorgar with Alien poker speech and sounds.

All boards are working and have all the essential Updates. Dan does a awesome job and gets your stuff back in a timely manner at a fair price.

Alien Poker’s sound and speech boards are good to go. The sound board got the usual treatment, new caps and connector headers, plus two new fuses. The speech board’s output was very low. Replacing one of the 1458 amps took care of that.
With low speech (or sound) the first thing to check is the setting of the 5K pot on the speech board. This adjusts the volume balance between sound and speech.

Nice!!! You must be excited to get your AP up and running!
Sounds like you found a really good local tech. That's invaluable!
Any more pics of that test rig? I really like what I'm seeing there.

When I pick them up I will get a few pictures of his test set up.

Started painting backbox hardware today and the transformer. I also got all my screws and bolts out of the tumbler. Looking pretty good I think.

I also bought some wood to make some repairs to the backbox. But after i got into it I decided I was just going to make a new one. It just had to much water damage and side damage. It also had some random nails and epoxy holding the bottom together. It has to go.

Do you have wood working experience. ?
It looks like you popped that out with no issues. Looks good

I have made a few Mame cabinets and a virtual pin cab and also just normal home construction. Thats the extent of my wood working. I just get in there and do it. This is my last Mame cabs i built and my virtual cab. The last picture is my firepower table next to the VP cab playing Firepower.

Started finishing up the backbox today. Drilled the vent holes and installed the guides for the backglass. I made one mistake on the base. Instead of measuring where the square cut out was i just measured the cut out and then centered it in the backbox. Shame on me for assuming it was centered. I also salvaged one piece feom the old backbox and it was the top angled piece that holds the top of the backglass.

i have painted the metal surround for the inner backbox black and also primed and painted the backbox. Next will be the stencils. But that will need to wait till this coming Tuesday. Back to work tomorrow. And who knew that the blue on the alien poker cab and the Budlight can were the same. Any way. Cheers.

I started the PF cab today. Although not in horrible shape it definitely needed some repairs, clean up and some fresh paint. The bottom needed to be torn off and a new bottom installed. People do the damnedest things. 85BD9908-D7C4-4FA9-9A8E-789444B3B782 (resized).jpeg85BD9908-D7C4-4FA9-9A8E-789444B3B782 (resized).jpeg

Instead of prying on the side to remove the spiral nails i just ground off the head pulled the rail off and then removed them with some lineman pliers. I will be powder coating the side rails so all grind marks will be covered later on.

Next I tackled the bottom cab panel. This was pretty bad. Besides just being ugly as Sh$t, the previous installer made a horrible attempt at a speaker grill. They also missed some nail placements as they were sticking up exposed.
I tore the old out, cleaned up the edges to lay the new bottom in and installed new trim along the outside. Also made a speaker hole for the new speaker.

The cab got a good sanding and some bondo patch work. The front panel also needed some extra attention. It appears the front has had some damage already due to the fact there is already bondo there. It was starting to separate so i glued and clamped and let set over night. The previous bondo job was crap so it go sanded and a new coat applied. The large chip on the back panel, the corners and the coin door lock brace holes got filled.

Quoted from luch:

it's for the playfield prop stick, it's upsidedown

I was thinking that. But wasn’t sure why it was down there and upside down. Thanks.

So the last thing to report on right now is the backbox stencil job. Man O man is it looking good. This still needs last layer of black for the face but I think it looks awesome so far. I also got the stencils traced out for the cab before the sand job.

Quoted from Nhpolarbear:

You do nice work. Is this the Alien Poker from T. Skinner?

Thanks. No this isn’t from Tommy. It was a FB ad in Colfax In. It was setting in a auto repair shop.

Painted metal pcb mounts look spiffy, but make sure they can still do their job electrically.

I left the backsides to all brackets bare. Once all grounded straps are installed ill make sure they are all good. Thanks for the heads up.

Installed the 1st side cab stencil. Looking good. Good thing I like to hoard nuts and bolts, they make great stencil edge hold downs for crisp lines.

Finished up one side of the backbox. Installed the playfield prop up post, the new speaker and installed the boards. Get closer and closer to being able to work on the playfield. I even got some new parts from pinball life. Flipper rebuilds, new shooter rod and springs, pop bumper caps, clear leg protectors and new lane guides and flipper buttons.

Looking great!
Cabinet stencils are the last thing I need to do to complete my Alien Poker. Already have a new backglass, new playfield and plastic set installed.

Excellent. What backglass and playfield did you get?

#72 4 years ago
Quoted from Silverstreak02:

What are you using for stencils?

I made my own stencils. Traced out and then transferred to postor board.

#74 4 years ago
Quoted from Silverstreak02:

I’ve always wondered how you transfer the tracing to the poster board. Can you explain the process?

You can check out earlier in the thread, but how i did it was, put tracing paper over the existing art, trace the bottom base image, for alien poker it was the black layer.
After the black outline is complete Cut 2 small boxes so each layer lines up together. Place new tracing paper over top of the of what u just traced out then do the red. Make sure to cut the 2 small boxes so you know it will line up. Then do the next layer the same, which was the black details in the face.
After tracing place each layer on poster board and then cut out.

Ryan,
I just sent you a PM. Let me know if you want to come over and see the playfield and backglass that I have available. About an hour from you. Great work on this project! Oh, I almost forgot. I have plastics too.

Thanks. PM sent

Quoted from davidw:

What color blue did you use for the cabinet. I saw the red was Rustoleum Colonial Red. Also, is the black just a gloss black?

Yes it is gloss black from Rustoleum. The the blue is a midnight blue. I can get the name of it next time im at the store but here is the color code. I took a piece of the backbox in to Menards paint section and started comparing. May not be exact but pretty damn close.

Did some work on the back display yesterday. The board isn’t in that bad of shape, basically just needs cleaned up, bottom glued and painted. The displays have yet to be determined. As you can see all of them were just flopping around.
The white or in this case yellow light dividers were a little tricky to remove, only had one bad casualty. Does anyone sell these? They were all placed in simple green to clean up. They are cleaning up pretty good.

Nice job on this machine. For the legs, did you sand them clean of all the rust, then paint them black? One of the photos on the sequence show this clean, metal legs. Is that silver paint or the leg free of rust prior to the black paint?
Alberto

Yes the legs were sanded primed and then painted with gloss black enamel.

Quoted from slochar:

You should keep a running total on how much this will end up costing you in time and materials. I prefer not to think about that when I'm doing stuff on my machines, though.... that's a rabbit hole....

I kind of have a good idea of the $$$ amount but not really concerned about it. Now if ya talk to the wife that may be a different story.

Quoted from winteriscoming:

This is also probably a good candidate for 3D printing. It's a very simple shape and would lend itself well to being printed. If these aren't available on Thingiverse already, there are several pinsiders who design and sell 3D printed stuff, so that may be an option.
Alternatively, you might get away with repairing the broken one by melting/gluing it back together.

I was going to give the ol super glue a try before buying new, but I had not thought about 3D printed stuff yet, good idea.

Probably not a $300 Alien Poker anymore, right?

Been working some OT so I haven’t done much in the last 2 wks. I did some new parts in, pop bumper skirts and bodies, leg braces, leg feet, power cord, and metal-mods pop cap stickers.

The backbox display board is all cleaned and painted, hardware also painted.

Wire harness placed back in the backbox. Still need to solder in the transformer and bridge rectifiers.

Went to menards today and picked up some parts for the rotisserie.

I ordered the overlay today. With that being said i finished the backbox. Turned out really well. Soldered in the fuse block and hooked up the bridge rectifiers. Installed the crappy displays (which will get replaced) and adjusted the brackets so everything lines up.
Want to thank Sheprd for the great looking backglass that he had extra. It looks great.

I will also be doing some scan work hopefully this wkend, i got a 4670 scanjet and will be doin the pf and plastics.

Stay tuned and thanks for looking.

The playfield has been put on the rotisserie and the disassembly has started. Yikes..... This is going to be nerve racking and exciting. And man is this thing nasty.
This thing must of had tons and tons of play considering the ball shooter lane area. The amount of wood that has been slowly banged away over the yrs is crazy.

New power switch installed today. While taking the cab apart awhile back I noticed that the wires had been soldered together, so the power switch essentially was the power cord. A piece of wood and metal were cut and painted, hole drilled in the cab bottom, and power switch installed.

And the coin door. What a mess. At some point someone really wanted inside this thing. It took some hammering, a vice and some tools but it got to looking presentable. Wiring was cleaned and parts were painted.

Everything on the playfield has been cleared off. I wasn’t planning on doing inserts but would ya look at that. Im doin inserts now.

They really came out much easier then i was anticipated. It doesn't take much heat at all.

I pulled one out and tried to sand flat. It was working but man i couldnt see doin that to all the inserts. So i spent $18 and bought all new.

Quoted from Waderade812:

I did a f-14 and replaced all the inserts. You will still need to sand them flat. When they come brand new they still aren't perfectly flat and they may even have numbers cast into the faces. Just so you know.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah i was planning on doing that, I just didnt want to spend the time hand sanding all the inserts. The old ones were cupped pretty bad, the triangle ones were curled at the point so they were also above the play field.

Quoted from dasvis:

A buddy of mine bought one in better shape than this for $85. No keys, so we drilled the locks & found $56 in quarters inside.
That was a nice score. I cleaned it up & repaired it for him, about $225 in parts....

Very Nice. Did the guy just acquire it some how and not know what he had? Or just needed it gone? The guy was originally wanting $400, I said Id do $275 and then he countered for $300.

#119 4 years ago

So are you guys saying I will still need to hand sand? I just figured I would install and then sand them while im doing the playfield.

I will be needing to do lots of clean up on the drops. And its missing some parts to reset the targets.

With the inside of the cab completed the glass channel and side rails installed and i had to put the head on to see what the total package would look like. And im diggin it. Looks fantastic i thank.

One thing I think i may change is the shiny new spiral screws. I was thinking it would look good with some other things that i left like the shooter spring but im thinkin black would look better. What do you guys think?

I think black.
Needs lighted flipper buttons.
Whole thing looks great!

Im thinking Black also, and it does have lighted buttons, they are red but they do look black in the picture. Thanks for the input.

Haven’t checked thread in a few days and it’s funny, we are working on the same piece. I just finished painting my rails on my Firepower project
and I set my buttons I got a few months back in place along with a polished stainless carriage bolt to see how it’ll look and I’m really liking the contrast of stainless and black. Looks like I might need to have some black screws on standby. Maybe the effect on mine will be different because the whole cab will be blacked out.
Your games looking great!

Iv been keeping an eye on your progress and things are looking good. Im thinking the shiny bolt heads will look good with an all black cab.

Shes alive. I got my leds i got the display boards complete so i took some time today to make sure all electrical was good and I plugged it in. Wasn’t sure at first if it was working but the volume was all the down and I hadn’t put in the bulbs yet.
Im really digging these blue displays from wolffpac. I had a few segments that that didnt light from the beginning but just needed to reflow a few joints and all was good.

I got in some work today on the drop bank. Took it apart gave it a good scrubbing and installed a few bee parts. I want to thank slochar for helping me out with a few parts that I couldn’t find.

Are you planning to paint your lockdown bar black ?

Quoted from mrm_4:

Funny you asked, I was going to ask the same question because I’m about to paint mine black and was debating using SprayMax 2K clear on it after painting to help keep it from rubbing/scratching off.
If you are painting are you clearing too?

Yes the lockdown bar will be black also. I dont think im clearing it, just a gloss enamel.
Im waiting on the weather be break to clear the playfield. Should be this coming wk. pretty excited to get moving on the clearcoat and overlay.

Yeah the $300 P.O.S is looking more in the range of $1500 right now. I know its not a very sought after rare gem but hopefully it can be around for another 40 yrs. with the elbow grease I've put into it.

Well i got the clear 2k down for the base coat. Going to take my buffer over the inserts but all in all I think it turned out pretty good. The last 2 pics are of the test for the over lay. I wanted to see how it was goin to react with the 2k. Went real good. I did a couple light coats 15 min apart and then did 2 more medium at about the same interval and then finished off the can an hr later.

What are you planning for playfield art? I have a new playfield CNC'd, have all the lenses (except cannot find plain triangle inserts anywhere, had to take starburst) but not glued yet. I had started making art from scratch in Illustrator based on a scan of my beat up playfield.

I bought an overlay from classic arcade. I also couldnt find a plain triangle insert so I just went with the starburst.

I got around to putting down the overlay today. It went on really easy. Laid down nice and smooth with no bubbles. I only had one issue and from previous people’s experience with overlays I had the same. And that is an issue of all inserts not lining up. I did my best to line up inserts on the bottom half of the pf and offset the difference with the top 4 kings. Its not perfect but i think it turned out pretty damn good. Now just waiting for my clear to come in Wednesday.

Round #2 of clear coat.
Playfield was wet sanded with 1500 and 2000. While doing so There were a few high spots arounds some inserts that actually got sanded down to the white of the overlay. No biggie though, luckily they were all in the black ring. So they just needed alittle touch up. Got those touched up and then applied 2 cans of 2k. There are still acouple slightly high spots around the inserts but looking really good over all. I think ill do another round but im not sure yet.

Hey guys Im looking for the large plastic on the right side that spans over the shooter lane. I have 2 but both are broke or cracked. Any body got one in good shape they are willing to get rid of?

Its been a couple wks since I have posted anything but things are back on track. I ended up putting 6 cans of 2k clear down. It turned out good. Not perfect. The clear went on super easy no issues there but it was just the overlay. To get out all the small bubbles from under the playfield was impossible. The slightest bubble shows up and it was mainly around the inserts.
It is still 100% better then what was there when i got the machine but not perfect.
I feel if I were to do this again I would not go with an overlay. The cost of the clear, new inserts, overlay and the time doing it, I would definitely spend the extra $300 to get a new pf. An overlay is good for when there is no other option. Anyway thats my thoughts on that.
I started populating the pf this wk, its coming together nicely. Got all the switches cleaned and installed. Drop Targets and stand ups installed. Pops started but not finished. I would have had the saucer kick outs finished but the kids have decided to hide the new saucer plates. Damn kidds.
Anyway those are on order and should be here mid wk.

Thanks for checking in with the project and we will keep trucking though.

All new LEDs installed under the PF also. I went with the same color frosted comets under the inserts but am going to try something different for the white "K" king and the "A"ace inserts. I thought it may be neat to put the RGB color changers under those. So once you go through that lane or hit the Ace saucers it would cycle through the colors instead of just white. Idk, we will see how it looks. What do you guys think? Do you guys have any in your game?

I am also trying the pink under the Orange inserts, Comet suggested trying it out so why not. I have amber/orange leds just in case.

I got the flippers all cleaned up with new new springs, mechs and sleeves. Coil papers beed replaced but that will be at a later date.

Well I have put quite a few plays on the ol Alien Poker, she plays good and smooth. Ill get a game play video up sometime next week, but first I need to make some first repairs.

1. When I start a game and it kicks the ball out to the shooter lane, it also adds player 2. I have checked the start button switch so far and it doesn't seem to be touching anywhere or to close to where it would be making accidental contact.

2. The center "Q" drop target stopped working, it will not reset. It does recognize when the target is down but does not reset to the up position. So I need to look into that.

Any suggestions on where to start is appreciated. Other then that its working really well and looks pretty damn nice. I was really surprised at how colorful the game is. The wife even loves it.

Thanks guys

1. This a common issue and there are few ideas on what it can be ...here is one thread i found right away but there are more.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/gorgar-intermittent-2-player-start-issue#post-2261840
2. This will most likely be a broken wire or diode on the board behind the Q target

1. Thats a good read and will try acouple things tonight and report back.

2. I have checked wires from the pcb to the backbox. Continuity is good goin to and from the “Q” drop. I have not checked the diodes. I will check that out.

Thanks again

#216 3 years ago

1. I cleaned the contacts And replaced the diode on the start game switch. I also replaced the diode on the trough ball kicker. Started it a couple times just to test the drop target reset. Looks good so far But will report back when i get to play several games.

2. So after cleaning the horseshoe contact, pcb, replacing the pcb diode and reflowing connections on the pcb, still nothing. But as you see in the picture the drop bank pcbs were not even connected. But the other 4 drops reset on start up. Ok so the pcbs have nothing to do with the reset process, good to know.
I checked power to each coil and thats good.
The grey-blue wire is the control wire so i checked continuity up to the board and its good and thats where im at. I dont have schematics so I dont know whats what on the board for this drop. I do know its the 3rd pin so any help is appreciated.

Well im not sure totally what the fix was but things are back and working correctly with the drop target situation. I have played several games and havent had a 2 player game start up yet either once it kicks a ball out. So we are in a win win situation at the moment.

I did notice another oddity, The "P" insert on Poker is already lit at the beginning of a game. So ill get on this tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Good to hear!
as far as the P on when you start a game you can check #31 in settings as there are 4 choices if you look in manual. If it is set with no P on then you possibly have burnt lamp transister.

Cool thanks for the heads up on that. Ill that out today.
New drop pcbs and horse shoe contacts came in yesterday so ill be replacing those also today.

Hey guys, With AP being a single ball game, when the ball kicks to the shooter lane it comes out barreling. Sometime it makes its way up the shooter lane a good 8", or it knocks it back inside the trough and then I have to nudge it out to the shooter lane. Any tips on this?

Ill have check to see what coil is in there. The trough doesn't have a roof on it just the too of the apron.

Hey guys just alittle update and question. The update is that I fixed the issue with the ball kicking high up in the ball trough/bouncing back in the kick out hole. I ended up bending the tab at the end of the ball ramp to "narrow the chute". Been working perfect now.

So the next order of business is the drop target bank is somewhat a pain in the ass. As im sure you all know. The drop bank has recently not been resetting the Q target. The target registers if it is up and down but it doesnt reset to the up position. The reset happens before each ball, hit the target out of sequence and if the 5 bank is completed. Any suggestions
