Having a blast replacing all the music in Mustang. So far I think I have it all locked now. These are the videos I took last night of some modes.
Here's a video showing the start of game mode selection music. The background music is the guitar solo from "Pantera's Walk" and I think it sounds great and it loops really smooth.
https://goo.gl/photos/saAyNGYEbNhVR4A86
This video shows the Police Pursuit 1 mode (first part of the Police Pursuit mode) and it's the guitar solo from Deep Purple's "Highway Star".
Complete the first part of Police Pursuit and then you'll hear Guns and Roses' "Out Ta Get Me" and is totally appropriate for this mode being chased by the cops. I love it.
https://goo.gl/photos/e1RhtnZMQV7SMbtSA
You can also hear Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" guitar solo playing when entering high score initials. This song also plays during Mustang Multiball and it's a treat hearing it then.
White Zombie's "Thunder Kiss '65" is heard playing at the end of the game. This also plays during Gear Shift Multiball.
Quoted from MustangPaul:Hey that's some wild shit goin on there, I like it. One of your pf insert lights is out. You gotta put a powered sub on it now.
Which insert? I do have a sub and just need to make a wire for it. Going to crank!
Edit: I see it now in one of the videos. Thanks!
Quoted from MustangPaul:Good you see it. Looks like you got a defective game better send it back. Good to see you found the club, you do know you got a great deal. I bought mine NIB from when they first came out and I haven't had so much as a bulb go out and as you can see from all my pictures I've REALLY modded it out. Have a blast with yours and again good to have you in the club.
Actually bulb isn't out. Camera just must have caught it not on.
Quoted from Tuna_Delight:ColorDMD code?!!!
Ohhhh yeah! Seriously, 20 minutes ago my wife and I are playing Mustang and I told her it's going to be awesome when the colordmd is ready for Mustang. She replied that she was already thinking that it needs color and looks so bland in red.
So it turns out I was far from done with my music editing of Mustang. I took a video last night playing one handed and I got through some modes. This video actually starts with Mustang Multiball playing Led Zep's "Rock and Roll".
https://goo.gl/photos/xaKWbzTC5ZBZZLoBA
When Mustang Multiball ends at :53, and instrumental section of Queen's "Brighton Rock" plays to replace the generic instrumental in that slot.
1:35 starts a new ball and car selection music is now the guitar solo of Great White's "Once Bitten Twice Shy".
1:55 starts Stunt Driver and now ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man is in that slot. I had it in the Drift Mod slot and have realized I'll rarely hear it there. Sharp Dressed Man also fits the Stunt Driver hollywood theme and the song rocks.
3:22 starts Police Pursuit and now the music is appropriately themed for the mode, "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction.
4:05 interrupts the mode with Gear Shift multiball and White Zombie's "Thunderkiss '65" plays.
4:35 Police Pursuit mode continues.
So I bought these speaker inserts or whatever they're called, from Cointaker at Allentown. I asked the kid how these are supposed to work since Mustang has round speaker holes. Did Mustang ever have the older square speaker grills?
He said these will fit behind the speakers, or something like that. I guessed it made sense and he knew what he was talking about.
Did I waste $20?
Quoted from sed6:Fair enough, but I contend Stern put them facing the wrong way. Cars in general are better looking when viewed at that 3/4 angle from the front, not the back. I say everyone should spin their cars around and see how much better their game look
I thought the same thing as you and was going to turn the car around if I replaced it to see what I thought. My Mustang came with two additional cars and I bought another car for $2 at the flea market a few weeks ago. I placed one of the cars in the right corner on the donut plastic too. It fits perfect there and doesn't block the view of anything, unless you are tall enough to see the captive ball do the donut loop. Just held in place with little squares of 2-sided tape on the bottom of each tire.
So far I like it there in the corner and I just placed the other cars on a shelf behind the bar. I'd like to find a model of my wife's '07 GT convertible in Metallica Alloy. Actually I did find it made by the Franklin Mint, but I ain't paying $100 for a toy car.
Quoted from MustangPaul:Now all ya gotta do is light up that shift plastic like I did.
Let's see a pic, sounds like a good idea.
Yeah, found it was those two pain in the ass to reach nuts. I need to replace the rubber under the car and what a pain.
Oh is it? Then I won't complain. Got the nuts off but I didn't have a smaller size ratchet wrench in my set which would made it much faster.
MustangPaul Thanks for the great idea of lighting the SHIFT plastic. Wow, what a huge difference!
But, while you're there installing the LED strip for under the car for the SHIFT plastic, also attach a white LED strip to the other side of the car to illuminate the pops area nicely.
When I started looking for a Mustang pin, I figured I'd try finding a Premium version. Turns out I found plenty of LEs and only a few Premiums. But generally the LEs I found were cheaper than the Premiums.
I bought a Pro instead.
I just placed my order for that new Pin Stadium lighting kit to install on Mustang. I think it will look terrific and really make Mustang shine. I'll post pics when the kits ship and I have mine installed.
Gotta admit, I'll be trying it out on our Baywatch too, which I think would look incredible with the lights.
I did a couple of minor mods recently. I replaced the captive ball with an orange glow ball and I found purple Nitrous Oxide keychains from China for $1 with free shipping. That was a no-brainer to install on the spotlight post next to the N2O Boost lane.

Quoted from MustangPaul:I like the silver wheels better. Sorry
Don't be sorry, it's not parked in your garage.
Quoted from BudManPinFan:Did you put a custom tune on it when you installed the CAI?
No, but I'm waiting to see if the CEL comes on with a lean code first. Going to give it 100 miles to see if the CEL comes on and if it does then I'll do a tune.
Quoted from BudManPinFan:You definitely don't want to run it too lean and risk detonating your engine. But even if you don't get a lean code a good tune will increase the throttle response and make it a lot funner to drive.
I used to tune my trucks and my favorite was turning the Tow/Haul button in to the Tow/Haul Ass button.
While on a telcon today I replaced the Mustang with another I had. All the cars I have are darker in color and this model looks the best so far out of the ones I have. This isn't whatever brand is stock and the other three cars I have are the stock brand. So that meant I had to drill the correct mounting holes under this car. But no big deal.

Quoted from Jediturtle:The Shelby was a nice upgrade...looks great!
I agree. The 2014 GT that was on there is nothing special. These are the other cars I have. I buy them cheap whenever I find one at a flea market or yard sale.
I just remembered I've been wanting to install a tachometer that is wired to the spinner, but then I saw the $90 price tag of the mod available for sale. So I bought a tachometer off eBay for $14 ($11.99 if you want to install the same model as being sold as a mod) and I should have it in a few days. I'll post pics once I have it installed. I think this tach is has a slightly nicer looking face, but that's subjective. Only $2 more and it comes from CA instead of China so I'll have it a littler sooner.
Just for the heck of it I bought a set of car door projectors for $15 and made a "virtual topper" for Mustang.
ebay.com link: 2 X LED Car Door Led Welcome Laser Projector Logo Ghost Shadow Light For Mustang
Took maybe 10 minutes to install. Super strong double sided tape hold the projector in place on the rear of the backbox. Then I just added a length of wire to reach the 12v up by the coin door and it's fed thru one of the many little vent holes in the top of the backbox.
My wife thinks it's really cool and I have to agree.
Quoted from MustangPaul:If ya got a white ceiling it looks great, I have playfields over mine so that wouldn't work. Those aren't meant to be on for hours at a time, it's not a matter of the bulb burning out but how long the image will last because of the heat and light the bulb is putting out. It will start to fade. But at that price who cares right, just replace it.
If/when it starts to fade then I'll install the 2nd one since two are included in the $15. I'll report back any changes, but I only turn my games on when I'm playing so I should get some good mileage out of this first projector.
Quoted from MustangPaul:But what does it do?
Oh, it just moves the tach needle when the spinner is it.
huh? I didn't take a video, but it works the same. You asked what the mod does so I showed you what it was.
Quoted from MustangPaul:Just wondering how well yours worked. Good to see you made your own.
Oh, works the same. I guess I thought you didn't know what the tach mod was.
Quoted from MustangPaul:I've had it for a couple years now, nice to see you got yours cheaper.
Well, it helps that I bought the game 3-4 years after it was released and only have had it 6 months. So I have the luxury of looking back at what cool mods people have come up with since its release and can now do it cheaper. Great idea for this mod and it looks great for sure.
Quoted from Tuna_Delight:A tach gauge is a great mod. Sure would LOVE to be able to add a nitrous gauge as well that is tied into the Nitrous Boost 2X (and 3X) scoring sequence!
I was thinking of this also. Since a nitro gauge reads the pressure of the tank I don't think there's any wire that connects to a switch like the tach does. So with a little creativity, you could buy a tach gauge and take it apart and try to replace the faceplate with a nitro face. If that is possible then could just print a nitro faceplate instead of buying a nitro gauge and removing that faceplate. Then just mount it and wire it to whatever nitro target switch you want.
Quoted from HOOKED:Yes please post a vid of how yours works not mine.
Id be very interested in seeing it.... before you blow smoke at my mod which by the way is 89 ready to install and in stock at hookedonpinball.com
Link to the video removed. Not really sure what the fuss is about with the video since it was posted on Youtube? I only linked it because it sounded like that Mustang guy earlier didn't know what it was, so I showed him. Also not sure what you mean by "blow smoke" at your mod? I just meant that personally I wouldn't pay $90 (free shipping included? That's why I said $100) to watch a needle move when the spinner is hit. To each their own, but for $15 and 30 minutes of time it was worth it to me to do it myself. I'm cheap and if I can do something myself instead of paying someone to do it for then I will nearly every time.
Quoted from HOOKED:For those that may not know a stock tachometer will not have the correct reaction without modification. A spinner does not spin fast enough to trigger the reaction needed.
Works just fine for me with the switch wire of the tach connected to the banded side of the diode on the spinner switch. I don't see any difference in the needle action. Not like any more or less needle action would matter to me anyway. I also prefer the faceplate of the gauge I bought over the one you use. But again, personal preference.
Quoted from HOOKED:If someone is looking for the proper mustang emblem used by stern....it is a 1993 cobra grill horse which you can get.on ebay and fits the factory holes on your pro.
I wasn't even aware that Stern had any Mustang emblems on their games. Is that only for the Premiums and LEs? I just happened to see this emblem on eBay and ordered it out of the blue. Cool to know, but I actually was not trying to match it up with anything else.
Quoted from HOOKED:No shipping is $6 which covers PP fees and shipping in the USA.
The "blowing smoke" reference means it is misrepresenting my mod you show in the vid by saying you can buy a off the shelf tach - hook it up as you describe and expect the needle to move over 2krpm.
Well, all I can say is that my setup works the same as yours does. I don't care what anyone else buys - yours or DIY. But my tach mod goes way over 2k and will peg 8k on a nice spinner rip or by pressing the Start button. I'm just reporting what I did and anyone else is welcome to try it out for themselves or buy your mod. Doesn't matter to me what anyone else does to their game because I just focus on myself.
I'm not selling this mod, so why do I care how another person spends their money? I stand to gain nothing by what mod a person chooses.
I get a little action on mine during the game and it does seem like it's a bumper. Didn't really pay attention to what target or whatever causes it since it doesn't matter to me. But yeah, I'll get a little needle action here and there during gameplay, not much action, but a little bounce like you said.
Found that Mustang 50th Anniversary dashboard/speedometer clock on eBay for $26 shipped. If I don't like the way it looks on the playfield then *maybe* I'll just use it as a topper even though I'm not fond of toppers. Otherwise my wife will put it on her desk at work since she drives our Mustang.
Amazon sells them for $50:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IRBSGG4/ref=asc_df_B00IRBSGG45181988/
My wife and I were playing Mustang tonight and at the last minute I thought to record video to show the tachometer. She managed one spinner hit during this video. I thought I was taking video earlier in the game but only ended up taking a pic instead.
Anyway, her spinner hit obviously made the tach go over 6k and not limited to 2k as stated earlier. A good spinner rip will bounce and peg 8k RPMs several times.
Took some video last night of Mustang for listening to the different songs I installed using Pinball Browser. Just playing to get thru some of the songs so most of them can be heard during the couple of games recorded. I have to change the song "Lit Up" that plays during Mustang MB because I moved the Free Bird guitar solo from there to Burn Out MB so I could hear it more often. I don't think I even started Burn Out MB during these few games though. But Lit up is a little too short now for Mustang MB, so need to re-edit a cut or swap in a new song.
I received the 50th Anniversary Mustang clock/thermoter/speedometer today. Might have time tomorrow to take it apart and begin modding it to install on the playfield.
Can't beat the price of $26 shipped. Keep an eye on eBay for one cheaper than the $49.99 Amazon price and have fun modding it yourself.

Edit:
Couldn't help not take this apart already while playing Candy Crush with my wife on our touchscreen bartop game.
This dash cluster going to be quick and simple to mod, but look fantastic on the playfield. If I have the right length posts and a white LED strip (or whatever color I decide to light the speedo with), then I can get it done tomorrow.
I'll post pics of taking it apart although no one should need them. Just unscrew, remove base, unscrew more, remove the glass so it doesn't show any reflections when mounted, install an LED strip, screw back together.
I'm not going to wire up the speedometer needle to move on a switch hit. I thought about that for 2 seconds and it doesn't make sense for a speedo needle to bounce around like a tachometer. I'd want a speedo needle to move quickly from 0-60mph or something, but not to bounce from 0 to 80 to 0 to 70 to 0 to 50, etc. So that saves time and effort not modding the needle. Just light it up, mount it and enjoy having that empty space in the back of the playfield looking sharp!
Quoted from sed6:Great plan! But where you gonna put it??
NOT my idea. A great idea though that I have fun doing as cheap as possible.
Last night I had some time to spend on the dashboard cluster mod. Wow! Looks terrific on the playfield and really "beefs" up the look of entire game too. The dashboard fills in the empty space in the back and it's really cool how the ball disappears behind the dash and the reappears when making the ramp shot feeding to the right flipper.
I don't even had any LED lighting installed yet since I was just test fitting mounting the dash. But I have a white 12v LED strip under the backbox shining on this area. I also have a white LED strip installed on the other side of the car to light up the pops area and this LED strip lights up the dash chrome trim nicely.
I have a blue LED strip that I'll try out and see what I think, but I'm not a big fan of blue LED lighting. Hopefully someone will be selling LED strips at York so I don't have to order them because I need more for other projects too.
I still need to tweak the mounting of the dash and angle up the front of it a little bit. Might have to wait until I buy shorter hex posts at York. I'd like to lower it a 1/4" and angle the front up for a better player's perspective view.
Only parts I needed were a pair of hex posts and an 8" strip of plexiglass that I cut from a sheet I have. You can see I cracked a corner of the plexi when drilling, but doesn't matter since it's not visible with the dash installed. You could also use a strip of metal or thin wood for this base too if that's what you have on hand.

The bottom of the dash would be a good location for a white LED strip shining down on the lanes too. That would brighten up the lanes nicely.
A video I took tonight showing the instrument cluster in the back playfield, but it doesn't have LEDs installed yet and I need to lower slightly and angle it. Video also clearly shows the tachometer mod I did working perfectly and as expected.
Video also shows what music I have selected for Mustang MB ready, then into Mustang MB and then back into the 2nd phase of Police Pursuit mode.
Quoted from pindude80:Does anyone have a file with custom music? I've never been much of a fan of the music track it came with from the factory and would like to add some "kick" to my game, I'm not really into the Beach Boys! lol
If you have a Pro, then here's mine to use. I think it's a kick-ass soundtrack, but let me know what you think.

Exactly. You gotta get to the good part of the song and sometimes an instrumental section works better than lyrics. The background tracks that play when not in a mode are perfect for guitar solo or instrumental sections of songs.
I've left the Mustang pinball club. I had a blast modding the game and especially changing the music. I don't think I would've had nearly as much fun playing if I was forced to keep the stock songs. But very fun and fast game, ultimately I needed to move a game out to make room for another one though. Originally the Shadow was going to go, but I realized I enjoy playing it much, MUCH more than Mustang, so Mustang drew the short straw.
Quoted from MustangPaul:Sorry to see you go. What game is coming in?
I was thinking of Aerosmith because my wife also enjoys it and she complained I sold Mustang.
Quoted from Spiderpin:Was yours it a Pro, Premium or Le. I know he's long gone and not looking back.
I had a pro that I modded, lots of fun. Never had a chance to play the premium/le model but bet it's really cool with the extra features.
Quoted from ccbiggsoo7:so whats everybodys opinion on this game, ive played the pro(like it) but not the le, whats le's selling for nowadays?
I had a lot of fun with my Pro, just was time to get something new to play. I had the most fun with Mustang editing the songs and music clips.
I picked up a Nascar two weeks ago and it's a much better game than Mustang and still has a racing theme. So I don't miss Mustang even though I really enjoyed it.
Quoted from ccbiggsoo7:wow, so nascar a 3k game is much better than a mustang? guess that tells me what kind of game mustang is! lol
Nascar isn't even a 3k game, so that makes it an even better deal.
Mustang is a lot of fun, but it's really bare compared to pins a few years earlier. If you don't replace the stock music in Mustang, then that brings it down a few notches in terms of fun. Mustang really shines as a great music pin when you replace the songs with your own favorites.
I sold my mine for $4000 because it was time to move a game out. Originally I was going to sell a Shadow, but I was having too much fun on it and it's a WAY better game than Mustang. Wasn't planning on selling Mustang, but it just made sense to move it for $4k instead of Shadow.
I don't miss Mustang at all. Recently picking up the Nascar (which I had never played before), hammered home the lack of pinball value Mustang provided for that price range.
I know two things about the Nascar theme - jack and shit. But I do know that the Nascar pin is packed with cool, fun, pinball features for $1500 less than a Mustang. I also greatly benefit from being totally unfamiliar with many of Stern games from the 2000s. So Nascar may be an old, "been there done that" for many guys and also surely has a theme that's not for everyone.
But for me? New and exciting. Just like Mustang was when I bought it a few years ago.
I was searching my Google Photos for something and found this video I took of Mustang playing the custom audio code I added. Sharing just because I miss Mustang.
Quoted from Toasterdog:Sweet. Did you delete the music tiles and leave blank on purpose? Can you change song titles vs deleting?
Don't remember exactly since this was from 4 years ago. I may not had added the titles on this version yet until I was happy with the song volumes and settings first.
Quoted from TKDalumni:Anyone have a Hooked On Pinball Tachometer they'd be willing to part with?
I made my own using an Amazon tach and then wired to the spinner switch. I probably wrote about it if you search the thread. I no longer own a Mustang.
