There is something about a black Trans Am!
Quoted from crlush:There is something about a black Trans Am!
Yes, but I prefer the '77 / '78 front end.
Have you seen the "new" Trans Ams being redone from a current generation Camaro? Very cool, but overpriced.

THIS front end. I like the 79-81's as well, but these do look "cleaner" IMO. This is my baby. New freshly rebuilt motor going back in it right now...
20200603_154425 (resized).jpgYes, I had a friend back in the day who would buy a new T/A every year.
He had a '77, then a '78, then a '79, and then had a 10th anniversary one.
I lost touch with him after that...wouldn't be surprised if he is still driving one.

There awesome cars to drive from that era. EVERY time I stop for gas or for whatever the reason, someone comments on it.

First one of those I saw was driving down the road a few years ago. I turned my head so quick, my co-worker who was riding with me asked if I got whiplash. He didn't know what I saw and asked. I said I just saw a car that doesn't exist.
Quoted from gorditas:The resolution isn't high enough to zoom in on the sign, but is the GTX at Vanguard Motors?
I just grabbed a stock picture .The car was actually at Gateway Classic Motors in Crete IL
My favorite Mopar of all-time is the 1968 Plymouth GTX. When I was 16 back in the 70s I had been saving my money from working at a gas station for a couple years in anticipation of buying my 1st car.
The final decision came down to two choices:
>1968 Plymouth GTX 440 Magnum Auto (loaded with power everything).
>1970 Chevelle SS396 L-78 4-Speed.
Both cars had about 60K original miles on them.
It was a tough decision but like most young men I consulted my father who was a die hard GM man and of course he told me to get the Chevelle which I did. No regrets but I still do like the '68 GTX a lot.
I got rid of the Chevelle in 1980 when the price of gas went from 69.9 for premium leaded to $2.00 per gallon overnight due to the Iranian hostage crisis. I could barely afford to drive to work (I only made $2.65 per hr).
I sold the Chevelle for $1,800 (the same price I paid for it a couple years earlier) and bought a used Datsun.
Rationing was implemented by the state (PA). It went by your inspection sticker on the windshield. Odd numbers could get gas on odd days and even numbers even days. 10 gallons max per day.
Fast-forward a couple years to 1982 when I bought my 1964 Nova SS 4-speed. I still have it today. I've also had several other muscle cars over the years but kept the '64 Nova.
Now the '64 is a pro street project that is in the home stretch of being completed. Should be done around August if everything goes as planned.
79 trans am. 16k miles. All original. Cool car. California car. I’m the 2nd owner. I have all the paperwork.

Anyone advice on the best way to sell the car and how to get it appraised? It has a 400 small block, dual quad carb. For you classic car guys, what would you think it is worth?
Thanks

Haggertys usually has appraisers they work with. Might get lucky and have a local that does it.
Has anyone used a custom ecu programmer like the SCT performance X4 ?
I have my eyes on it but it looks too easy to be true.

Preloaded tuner? I’ve used HPtuners, SCT, banks, efi live, renntech and a few others. They all have their own quirks.

I have a Hemi Fever tune on my R/T challenger via diablosport tuner.
They are easy to use and pep up your performance, especially throttle response.
You will feel/see a difference, but its not going to be huge change like installing a super/turbocharger.
A new tune really works well with other mods like a new intake and exhaust.

I have used it a lot on my Fords. It’s pretty easy. Just make sure you get all the updates from your PC plugged vs Wi-Fi directly.
What are you tuning? And better yet, what does you custom tuner recommend?

Updates are huge. Tuner is also a key element for custom tunes. I’ve done stand alone AEM, Holley and Motec as well. Tuner is the driving force on those. And what your shooting for.

Did you add a 180 thermostat with the tune? Really helps with heat soak on these hemis.

It's for a Mustang GT 2011, she really wakes up at 3500rpm, I want to improve below 3500. I think the engine doesn't get enough air. I haven't tuned it at all yet, so I'll probably add an air intake too.

If it wakes up above 3500 rpm, it’s not an airflow issue. Try tuning first. Most modern cars don’t have airflow issues until you add forced air induction or motor mods.

If it’s got standard 3:25 rear gears change to 3:55 or 3:73
Quoted from freddy:If it’s got standard 3:25 rear gears change to 3:55 or 3:73
I wouldn’t change gears until you have a mod plan. Turbos love below 3:55 gear ratios.

I’d deal with Lund (I used to deal with John Sr. when he was still flying helicopters for a pharma) but have done my Shelby tuning with VMP. They’ll have you datalog with the XCal4 and it’s pretty easy.
Like Titan said, I used to tune blown fox bodies with the old Interceptors. The new stuff has tons more capability with really good tuners. Lund, Palm Beach and VMP are the best to get a tune from.
Your trans has 1 in 5th so gearing would be improved with 3.73 or so but not so bad since you’re essentially gaining gearing with the 1 5th gear. And if you get a blower, you’ll want that current 3.31 gear if that’s what you have.
Good luck and feel free to PM if you have questions.

Great color combo on that car. I'd say you made the right choice.
I'm headed out today to trailer home my 69 Charger. Lack time to replace the wiring loom has finally caught up with me and the "ON" position circuit died. I had to limp it to my friends house last night. Always an adventure.

I know. I was simply stating before making decisions on what to mod, have a plan in mind. If you end goal is a supercharger or turbo, mods should be made to support that eventual change.
If your staying NA, I always recommend CAI, cams, headers, exhaust and 373 rear gears. 410’s are too much.
Quoted from Roostking:Did you add a 180 thermostat with the tune? Really helps with heat soak on these hemis.
No, I stayed away from the thermostat.
But, seeing it is a 5.7L RT, I installed a 6.4L intake manifold, 6.4L exhaust manifolds and exhaust, coilover kit, front and rear swaybars, a one-piece aluminum drive shaft and a strut tower brace. And of course the hemi fever tune.

I've got a 5.7L R/T Plus, how do you find the one piece drive shaft? Which one did you get? I think the hanger bearing is starting to go on my stock 2 piece. I already had the sport suspension on mine, so I just used lowering springs on the stock Bilsteins and the biggest swaybars I could get(Hotchkiss). Whiteline rear cradle bushings, adjustable rear upper control arms, toe links and subframe connectors as well. I did do the 180 thermostat since I only drive my car in the summer and I do track it (road course) on the weekends. My coolant and oil temps were getting uncomfortably high on hot and humid track days.
I skipped the 6.4L manifolds, shorty headers just weren't worth it to me on a cost/labour vs gains scale. I do all my own work and if I'm fighting with those SOB's to get them off, it's long tubes or nothing.
Kicked around the idea of doing a blower, but we just moved in the spring and money is kinda tight while we do house renos and such. Now going back and forth between blower or just doing a hotter cam and a tune.

Right on, I bet she runs and handles nicely!!!
Quoted from Bowman9:Grauwulf I went with "The Driveshaft Shops" aluminum one-piece driveshaft.
I was toying around with the idea of a camshaft, but the install costs seemed to out weigh the power increases.
If you do a cam, you gotta do it as a whole package. Cam/headers/full exhaust/gears/CAI/tuning. It ain’t cheap but can net 50-100 whp. Superchargers are usually the best bang for the buck.
Had a great summer with this thing. Got it last year and spent about 10k getting it in shape. It has the original interior, both tops, engine, 4sp transmission, 4:10 posi, exhaust system and a 60 year old Lacquer paint job. Everything works now and it is a walk back in time to drive.

Quoted from Roostking:Stunning and all time classic. 327? 4 speed and 4.10 posi. That must be a blast to drive!!
Yep 327 340 hp. That was the highest hp next to Fuel Injection (360hp). The 340hp has the AFB Carb and a dual point distributer (no advance). The engine had a Mechanical 30/30 cam. I took that out and went with the Competition Cams Nostalgic + L79 Hydraulic cam. Much more "Well Behaved" ... The car hooks up really well and has a nice "Hole Shot" . Not much of a long haul machine with the 4:10 rear. An automatic overdrive would be perfection.
Took it up Lookout mountain yesterday as a last of the season run. This was on my bucket list for this year. I was whistling “Dead Mans Curve” ( a 1962 tune by Jan and Dean) the whole time. It was almost a perfect outing til my damn wheel cover came off on a curve! Shozbut! Fortunately, It didn’t fly off the mountain and I was able to retrieve it…

Yeah it has been running much better since I replaced the cam. I even removed the electric fuel pump for vapor lock.
Looking for a black or blue 78-81 trans am ttop. Willing to trade pinball machines or cash. Looking for an everyday driver not a frame off resto or a museum piece. Not looking for projects or rust buckets either. My collection is visible here on pinside. Let me know what you got
