The Fight of the Century was at The Garden in 1971.

Do you work on 7th Ave above Harrington's Bar and Grill?

Sorry, but the states that get the most welfare are red states. If you weren't a close minded Faux News watcher you would be a little more informed.

Yes

I can't think of a SINGLE city that isn't overwhelmingly pro-Ali this week.

Just some bitter individuals scattered around the country, pointlessly fighting long-ago battles.

Dude, let it go...

Allah, Jehovah and Yahweh are different names for the same god.

1/3 of the Quran is the Old Testament. All of the prophets like Noah, Jesus and even Mary are in the Quran.

Everybody can relax....

Wait a minute, a man who changed his name to Muhammad Ali and converted to Islam thinks Allah is the greatest? I cannot believe this is true.Ogeist, you have convinced me. You have shown me the light with your well thought out arguments. I now have full clarity on what kind of man Muhammad Ali was.

It never fails.

The less people understand about the world, the more they boast about their ignorance, lol.

Yup. This thread went a long way toward proving that.

I'm in Amsterdam this week. At one point I was lucid enough to operate my camera and I spotted this in a window...

Ali! Loved worldwide!

Just wanted to drop my 2 cents for a different opinion. First of all RIP Champ. Its one of those ironic situations where the this beautiful gifted, loquacious, athlete gets trapped in a body that doesn't cooperate. I met him a few times. You knew you were in the presence of greatness. His slow movements and quiet speech only made you pay greater attention. I am not an Ali fan. I think the rope a dope is the worst move ever in boxing. Yes, it worked against foreman, but it worked so well Ali continued to use it for the rest of his fights. If you recall, he would come in to a fight out of shape and just let people whale away at him until they got tired. Horrible, horrible fights. Frazier was his friend, gave him money when he was down, stood up for him to get re-instated, and in return Ali called him a gorilla, an uncle Tom. Ali was most effective from a distance, Frazier liked to get inside and bang that left hook to the body. Frazier would work his way in and Ali kept grabbing him behind the head and pulling him in tight, stifling the inside attack. Its illegal. Ali was never warned or penalized even though frazer says he did it over 100 times in their fights. One ref even slaps Alis glove away when he's holding, but no warning. He lost to Jimmy Young, a friend of mine, but was given the decision. I knew he would lose to spinks the first time. I made money. Ali took him too lightly and came in out of shape. He dragged Ernie Terrells face along the ropes, damaging his eye. But he was a beautifully gifted boxer. A true showman. A self promoter. A great humanitarian who loved everyone. But he did cheat on his wives. I did not serve in Viet Nam, not old enough so I can't speak for those that did. THEY have a right to be angry with him. But I feel he refused to be drafted for the right reasons. Like all legends, he was larger than life and also flawed. He continued to fight long after he should have retired. Unfortunately, he had a lot of people depending on the money he generated so he kept getting in the ring. I will miss him, but I miss all the greats, Frazier, Norton, Patterson, Terrell, Young, etc.
As for how he would have done vs various other champions, I don't think you can really compare eras. I will say this, Ali trained to go the full 15 rounds. Most of todays heavyweights are gassed after 5. Ali was robbed of his best years.

I have a huge signed framed picture of the Frazier knockout front and center in my office at home. I consider it one of the greatest sports photos ever. I recall as a kid having no interest in boxing watching Wide World Of Sports on a Saturday just to see he and Howard Cosell together.
A lot of Ali posts and pics today on social media and no doubt he lived up to his self titled 'the greatest' moniker. But, amazingly one of the greatest athletes ever is more respected for the person he was outside the ring - devoted to his religion, political beliefs, and social issues. Never a thug he spoke proudly about who he was and what he believed in and those who didn't understand his differences from themselves listened out of respect because of how he carried himself - and in a time far less accepting of such things as today. That's a leader. That's why you still respect Muhammad Ali, not because he was a great boxer.

If you have this picture, its Liston, not frazier.

I have never betted on a sports event. When it was announced he would fight leon Spinks,i bet on Ali! Lost!! Ali looked like a B fighter bum! He did it on purpose, cause he knew he actually could beat Spinks! So,on the rematch,Ali kicked his ass.Leon Spinks went down as holding the crown for the shortest time in Boxing. Ali went down as first Boxer in history to regain the Title 3 times!! A straight up con! But,the rope a dope is a thing of beauty to watch! IMHO

Rope a dope is the worst move in boxing. Back in the day, they would have disqualified Ali. I believe there was a rule once you had to throw a certain number of punches per round. Its was almost as bad as watching john ruiz fight. (Punch punch hold, punch punch hold.)

1. There was never a rule like that. That's ridiculous, and pretty surprising to hear something like that from someone who seems to know something about boxing. There's better ways to make an argument than just making shit up.

2. They would have disqualified him back in the day?! Are you kidding? They didn't disqualify you for standing over a guy and beating him senseless as soon as he got up. They let you fight 40 rounds. There were virtually no rules. If a guy wanted to lay on the ropes and let himself get hit they'd have no problem with it back in 1920. And they would have gotten knocked out because they weren't as fast or as smart as Ali.

3. Yeah it wore out it's welcome as the 70s dragged on but the rope a dope was simply ingenious in the foreman fight and it allowed Ali to - once again- silence the haters with a miracle win. Pretty astounding stuff.

Five things about Ali.
Most interesting to me: he dumped his 1960 Olympic medal when he represented the USA in the Ohio River right after he was denied entry into a whites only restaurant

This actually ended up not being true.
