The ‘46 Chicago Coin Goalee that I am working on has three AC motors on the underside of the playfield. The motors have a hang tag which instructs the operator to put one tablespoon of “medium grade low pour test oil” in the gearbox case. It also states a “medium grade ice machine oil” is satisfactory.

Does anyone know what the equivalent is in today’s oil? Or have good experience with something you’ve tried?

since the gearboxes are sealed, I wash out the old stuff with solvent via the screw hole then squirt in a little synthetic grease (e.g. magnalube recommended by multiproducts).

key thing is don't put a lot in there. You want the grease on the gear teeth, not packed between the gear faces where the tackiness will bog the motor down.

pretty much any NLG-2 synthetic grease is fine, and due to the viscosity it won't weep out the shaft. You're then good for years of doing nothing else.

for the armature/rotor bearings you can use 3-in-1 in the blue can or any modern teflon lube like tri-flow.
