I'm sure I should be able to figure this one out but I can't seem to get it....

Just bought a non-working Gottlieb Playball. I got it to power up but upon start up the motor just keeps running and running. How do I get it to stop and and get a game started?

Does it run-on at power up, or after pressing the replay/start button?

One or more normally open switches are sending power to the score motor... Some simple things to check: See if any of the coin chute switches are stuck in the closed position; make sure the score reels are fully resetting to zero... Do you have a schematic for the machine? The schematic can tell us what relays and switches might be sending power to the score motor...

Coin switch was stuck. Thanks for the advice. Would never ever have thought to look there.

So now game plays but I have a new problem: Every ball that rolls over a "base hit" doesn't matter double, triple or homerun in the outlane draining the ball, it scores 5 runs. Baseball impossibilities aside, clearly the scoring is off. Thoughts?

Quoted from Leosac:

Do you mean that either outlane rollover switch scores 5 runs? Looking at the photo on IPDB (http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=1816&picno=14403&zoom=1) both outlanes are Home Runs, and looking at the schematic those are the only two Home Run rollovers.

If that's the case, I'll assume that the H/Home Run relay closes and the F/Run relay fires 5 times when either of those outlane switches closes. That can happen if there's a problem with the Hit Unit, which I think is a stepper:

If the Hit Unit is stuck in the 3rd position you'd see 5 runs for each Home Run. See if the Hit Unit advance solenoid fires when you roll over the Home Run switch. If it does, check that the stepper's wiper disk is advancing each time. It might be as simple as having to tighten the locking bolt that holds the wiper on the shaft.

When it rolls over Out lane Homerun, or in play Triple (upper corners) or Double or Single. Doesn't matter. ever rollover scores 5 runs.

Still sound like the same problem? Same solution?

Could be. What is your Hit Unit wiper disk doing when you hit those rollovers? How many steps does it take? I think it should take 4 steps each time you get a hit of any kind.

Check the score motor switches. It sounds like one of them is staying closed.
