Am I being too pessimistic?

Probably. They'll get far less traffic in a home, and quite frankly I don't think it's anymore to worry aboot then other companies (they all have issues).
Funny part is I was at Marvin's specifically to play Beatles, which was turned off. Played a bunch of Pirates that had loose PF part jangling around. Their AFM plays floaty as shit too.

Quoted from mamawaldee:

I'm currently in for non-matching MBrLE.
Went to The Arcade in Brighton yesterday, and got excited when I saw a flawless AFMLE there.
I was simply...just...beautiful.
Started playing and immediately discovered the left flipper is screwed. Acting exactly like the hold coil transistor was latching up. Seen that before when a coil is changed and they forget to replace the recirculation diode, after so many voltage spikes the transistor becomes a thyristor. It looked like an electronic problem to me for several reasons.
Regardless, we told the dude, and he comes out to take a look at it. Runs some diagnostics, lifts the playfield, looks under it for a bit, fiddles with a few things, puts playfield back down, runs more diagnostics, game turned off for the remainder of our visit which was around five hours.
I even told the guy when he started looking at it, "I'm very curious to see what you can do with this because I have MBr on order, and I'm worried about this new system".
I'm not too happy to see that the game remained dead. This arcade at least used to have good techs, so while it might not be that bad, I really wanted to see the soldering iron come out and that game come back to life. There are a lot of games there, its not too crowded, and the place only open on the weekends and not even all day. Its not like the game was getting hammered constantly. The playfield is like glass.
There is another local AFMLE at Marvin's Mechanical Museum in Farmington Hills. One of the tri-color LEDs on the big saucer was not working. Another electronic problem. These games are in places where they should be well maintained. Am I being too pessimistic?
I'm sulking about resuming the hopeless search for an affordable nice original MB again. I want something I can fix later on.
Even one LED not working will make me blow a gasket after spending $8300+tax.

Machines on route are at the mercy of abuse, high plays, and owners/operators knowing how to fix them. I think both of those are perfectly able to be fixed.

I know a guy who has an incredibly good shape original Monster Bash. HUO only, he had the PF clearcoated so it still looks brand new. But I'd imagine he'll want a solid price for it since it's such an immaculately cared for pin.

I played an on route AFMr the other day that was floaty. Felt exactly like mine at home when I had the PF at 6.5 degrees. Upped mine to like 7.2 and it plays significantly better. It's amazing how badly set up machines on route can be sometimes. Played an ST that you could easily and clearly see was tilted to the right for the PF. Even my wife commented on it.

Quoted from ctviss:

I wonder if it would be possible to upgrade a CE with the larger display.

That would really defeat the point of a CE (Classic Edition). That's why there's an SE version. Purchasing a CE and trying to turn it into an SE makes zero sense.

Quoted from mamawaldee:

These games are in places where they should be well maintained. Am I being too pessimistic?

FWIW, I've had my AFMR for 18 months and the only issue I've ever had with it, is I had to solder a wire back onto a switch that came loose. Zero issues so far with MBR since late December and a few hundred plays. But yah, if you're feeling squeamish about these newer pins that don't run off the traditional board sets of the last 30 years, then sticking with older games is a safer bet for you.

Quoted from f3honda4me:

The LE gets a gauranteed higher grade playfield. The SE you might get a slightly lesser grade PF.

Since there is 'some' process variance, it makes good sense that they (say) playfields are QA-sorted to justify the LE premium price. It's good, proper marketing.... particularly since it doesn't affect gameplay and you can't demonstrate any real playfield quality improvements on an LE game.

Not for the consumer if it's cheaper.

Sounds like a PITA just a save a tiny sum. You already have to fork over $400 to get color, then whatever the display costs and a new speaker panel. You may save a couple hundred and you have given up the other upgrades the comes with SE in the process. Still makes little to no sense at all.

Thats like half the threads on Pinside

Couple hundred bucks ain't the worst thing g to save, but they do have them priced pretty well to make you jump up.

Sorry, 80% of threads

#3509 5 years ago

Well all I can say to you Law, is go on and upgrade your CE, let us know how it works out.

#3510 5 years ago

I don't see how it would be cheaper.. If they ever sell the topper or whatever LE parts it will probably be expensive enough to convince people to buy LE. Sort of how the $400 color upgrade convinced me to go SE.

#3511 5 years ago

and $400 is just for normal sized. Anyone have any idea how much the larger one costs? I mean..that thing is sexy.

#3512 5 years ago

Has anyone info, when the European le‘s are ready ?

Dood,
don't worry - I have MMR LE and AFMR LE and they are bullet proof:

They are my most reliable games.

They will never sell the topper individually....if u wanted to sell it for some reason u could probably get a pretty penny for it

#3515 5 years ago

Someone is selling their unused (unopened) topper on the market currently.

cheap...I bet he could have gotten a lot more?

#3519 5 years ago

If there was an ad for a topper, it would show up in the archives regardless if it sold or not. I don't see it. Are you sure you didn't see the wanted ad for a MBRLE topper that's out there?

Hmm..maybe it wasn't an ad, but it wasn't a wanted. He said something like "Ceiling isn't high enough for the topper so rather than keep it in the box, I'm selling it.". Maybe I saw it in a 'area' thread..but I saw it last night.

#3522 5 years ago
Quoted from Zablon:

Found it, looks like it did sell quickly.

Okay that make sense. It wasn't an official ad, rather a mention in a thread. If it sold that fast in a thread like that, I would imagine it could have sold for more with a real ad that would have reached a wider audience.

#3523 5 years ago

I wonder if the LE topper would work on anything but an LE? I'm guessing not........Reason I say that is when my machine boots I notice is says "LE" somewhere in the boot sequence.

#3524 5 years ago

And not violate the warranty? Nope, probably not.

My SE says they same thing during bootup - "LE Ver 2.0" I think.

Pretty sure that it has an external driver board like AFMR LE has.

From what we have seen the connection needed to run the LE topper for both MBr and AFMr is available on all the SE versions.

Wouldn’t stop me from looking at the boards and wiring and scats however if I found an LE topper and I owned an SE or a CE, but the holes drilled in the top of the backbox might have to wait until the warranty ran out... I would start with the schematics and see if the driver is physically installed in my driver board. Adding a molex pin or three and drilling holes is pretty cheap.

#3529 5 years ago

Lermods could probably answer that best as he came up with the plasma disc that is on the LE and not on the SE. Per his website the wiring/connection is there for the disc to connect up with no issue. I would bet anything the same thing is there for the topper and a shaker motor since you can easily add a shaker to the SE (LE of course has it already)

#3530 5 years ago

The schematics for the topper are in the manual.. Seems possible they sell toppers later on.

I need to double check, but I think their different. My AFMRLE had a separate small board. The MBRLE plugs directly into the main board in the back box.

#3534 5 years ago

Was anyone else contacted about their order by CGC here on pinside only to have them not respond again? Was contacted by Doug and then Ryan when Doug did not respond after a week. Been almost a week since I heard anything.

The small board from AFMrLE is now located inside one of the “amps” boxes on top of the MB topper. This reduced the amount of wires to a single 3 prong/wire connector between topper and head.

It’s also just a light show, nothing moving. So it’s simpler

You know, I honestly don’t mind moving parts....but that Alien on my AFMLE is so freakin loud! Lol.

Light bleeding into Creech was killing it for me.. Put some tape along the nearby pcb and he's totally dark now.

for $1000 I will pull my topper off and put a red bow on the extremely overbuilt box it came in for the buyer.

#3542 5 years ago

I got a call to get my matching mbrle delivered this week. It came directly from chicago since i ordered from pps. It is being delivered by roadrunner freight which doesnt get great reviews. Anybody have experience with this company?

I know it sounds crazy but put it up - it's def going to sell for 750 IMO.

Just got word that my non matcher is going to be shipping this week. Thank goodness.

MBR owners ? Are you able to tap flipper buttons at start of game and have it play different music ? I know I did it on my original it’s in the software , from
I was told the designers put that in for themselves? Just curious

Thanks

MBR owners try this out ?

I believe that was talked about earlier in this thread. Should work just the same as the original.
