What is the deal with all the closed threads? Too much moderation will ruin this site.

It's up to us.
People can control themselves. People can run wild.
You do get to choose.
Once they stray way off topic, get nasty, or violent. Is that the Pinside you want ?
LTG : )
I noticed one thread was locked where lawsuits were being discussed in relation to pinball. I don't see how that should be locked. You do not have to agree with the subject matter for it to be a valid pinball topic.
I remember the days when locked threads were rare and the reasons for the lock were clear. Now the locks are frequent and the reasons are generally ambiguous at best.
I think we've all noticed an uptick in action from the moderators over the past couple months. This is, in general, a very good thing. There is a lot more activity on this board than just six months ago and a lot of the poison from RGP is now here . . . tough moderation is good.
That said, some of the threads that were closed today do seem like they could have stayed open as I'm not sure what rules they broke. That said, I'm not a mod so it isn't my job to determine what should or shouldn't be left open. The mods don't have an easy job on this site with all the activity here now . . .
If you have an issue with a moderator or a group of moderators go directly to Robin. Attacks on individual moderators or multiple moderators will not be tolerated. Seriously pretty crazy how some of you act sometimes towards individuals that do the very best they can to help the site. If you want an unmoderated pinball site there are others out there that may be a better fit. Pretty rediculous IMO but as always to each their own.
5 threads locked Im guessing moderators do this for free so lets give them a pass, they normally do a pretty great job, lots of new members recently and too many threads. I dunno....
Quoted from jarjarisgod:I remember the days when locked threads were rare and the reasons for the lock were clear. Now the locks are frequent and the reasons are generally ambiguous at best.
LOL, true. I use to run into the thread the moment I saw it was locked to see what happened. Normally boobs, sometime drunk posting, always funny. Now it just seems like minor squabbling or a negativity gets threads shut down; which is fine. I like pinside being a happy place.
Everyone gets along here waaaaay better than in most forum communities. Of course, pinball is vastly less controversial than sports sites or political sites in general.

I agree. Moderating is a tough gig and they do a good job of it. Lately though I've noticed a lot of threads being closed for unclear reasons, but it is what it is I guess.

How would we have a clue as to which moderator is locking the threads when they do not even bother to say that they are locking and give a reason?
5 threads in *three hours*... 7 in 24 hours. Half of those I can see, but the other half not so sure... and a bunch that probably should go remain. Ah well.
Threads that exhaust the useful conversation and devolve into a running argument 500 posts long among the same people will get locked. Is that clear enough to understand?
Quoted from DCFAN:How would we have a clue as to which moderator is locking the threads when they do not even bother to say that they are locking and give a reason?
We don't have to but if you want the reason why the last thread attacking mods was closed (by me) it was to avoid members getting further ban votes. Personal attacks against moderators will not be tolerated. As I said if you don't want moderation there are other forums to use.
I've seen threads where they say something aleck and then lock. That's not good moderating, that's having to have the last word because you're a control freak.
Quoted from The_Dude_Abides:If you have an issue with a moderator or a group of moderators go directly to Robin.
If one of you guys locks the SWDE thread I'm going straight to Robin!!!!

Using that purely subjective criteria, feel free to close these threads...

Whats RGP?

I actually missed entirely what G said in that thread. I agree the moderators should never be attacked.

I don't really understand the "personal attack" phrase. Where was there a personal attack on a moderator? Discussing us pinsiders not understanding why certain threads were locked is certainly not attacking anybody.
I am guessing that I must be missing some details?
Quoted from The_Dude_Abides:We don't have to but if you want the reason why the last thread attacking mods was closed (by me) it was to avoid members getting further ban votes. Personal attacks against moderators will not be tolerated.
You could have just edited it (which you did) and left the thread open (which you didn't).
I realize it is a tough gig, a judgment call in a lot of cases and you can't please everyone. That thread wasn't that bad compared to a lot of other threads I've seen on here that have been allowed to continue on unimpeded.
Plus, what Gambit said was funny and it had an edge of truth to it. I have no quarrel with the moderator he mentioned, but it is obvious to anyone who has been on this site for any period of time that Gambit and that particular moderator have a habit of rubbing each other the wrong way.
I have taken my complaints straight to Robin, Dude. About the very mod that you edited my post over. It wasn't an attack in the slightest, either. You have a funny definition of "attack", apparently. I have had other mods tell me personally that they agree that the particular person I mentioned was not even tempered with regards to me. You know it, I know it, other mods know it. There is a fine line, and I will walk on the right side of it with regard to EVERY OTHER person here. But if you want to side with him, ban vote me for #2. You'll make every person that is dragging this place down happy.
Quoted from DCFAN:I don't really understand the "personal attack" phrase. Where was there a personal attack on a moderator? Discussing us pinsiders not understanding why certain threads were locked is certainly not attacking anybody.
And yes, I overlooked this in my last post... What Gambit said wasn't a personal attack in my eyes. It was more of an observation that, frankly, had truth to it.
Quoted from Magic_Mike:Freedom of Speech.
More like a viper pit. I have an account there. I use to post there but man . . . talk about a bunch of clicky people with no sense of humor and no desire to be inclusive. Their arrogance is only topped by how nasty they are to each other. Pinside is heaven; RGP is the other place . . . it is thanks to the good moderation that we have here that this is a nice place to hang out.
There are rules for a reason. Simply follow those and stay on topic. In fact, this is a niche pinball forum, I'm not even sure why we have things like off-topic.

I am not going to continue this conversation with you if you can't see it that is okay. Calling a moderator a Nazi is not an attack?? Okay, I have said my piece. If you have issue with moderation go to Robin.
Your not the one that said it Gambit I was talking about an earlier post by a different Pinsider. If my judgement is different then some of your guys regarding personal attacks I am sorry. I just call them how I see em and do the best I can.
I didn't call anyone a Nazi. Never used that word tonight. I certainly hope you aren't suggesting that I did.
Quoted from jrivelli:In fact, this is a niche pinball forum, I'm not even sure why we have things like off-topic.
I originally came here for pinball. I've stuck around for the people and the discourse. Over time I've found that I have similar non-pinball interests with other members and want to discuss those topics with the people I've met here. Is that too much to ask?
Most forums have some sort of general discussion/off topic area for this very reason.

Hopefully to bring a little levity here before this gets more serious as both G and Dude are cool, I actually did call someone a Nazi tonight for pointing out the their and there thing.
Quoted from NimblePin:Oh look, pizza's here!!!
I believe I ordered one with cajon crust.
Yeah, I was the one called the Nazi! Don't see me complaining (because the first person to bring up Nazis or Hitler in an argument automatically loses!)
Don't think gambit said "nazi" or anything related, but he did make an unflattering comment towards abso2 that has been edited out.

Unflattering or not, I never called him (or anyone, for that matter) a Nazi. But to read between the lines in this thread, Dude closed that thread b/c I "attacked" a mod by calling him a "Nazi".
Never. Happened.
But I am sure that we will be entertained with a "take it to Robin" now, just for good measure, and to avoid the oops.
Quoted from PEN:Anyone want to talk about religion or politics?
Oh, don't do that!
You'll get a ban vote for "Not believing in the Easter Bunny."
Still waiting on your e-mail response to that one Robin.

No kidding. The whole off topic section is annoying. Glad I can filter it out.

You are misreading the entire point. No one said you called anyone a Nazi, however mods were called Nazi's earlier, look it up yourself if you are so inclined.

You should probably drop that, you spewed some ridiculous garbage in that thread.

If you're talking about the rodeo thread, that was posted in jest with a smiley ( not as an attack ).

Agreed. What was the problem there?
