The funniest part about this to me is there are a good amount of people right now looking for a solid return on investment for sums like $15MM to $50MM, but those people do not buy into these kinds of things because there is no return and most of them don't even know pinball exists.

As a side note, with the recent bankruptcy you will have a hard time passing background checks. There's pretty much zero chance anyone is handing out 100k without evidence of financial management skills.

    #682 1 year ago

I might have missed it, but what's with the September 1st deadline? If a whale shows up on September 2nd, the deals off?

    #875 1 year ago

Hah I knew the dates were either a misguided attempt at generating "fomo" or related to the date he has to pay people for the bankruptcy.

So you'd need more money to build an unlicensed game than a licensed one. Got it.

It's because the licensing company is so excited about the exposure....

You came in here to tell us all that?

Nah it was a much bigger post but I chose to be kind.

I thought Ben Heck was working on a board set you could use.

    Quoted from Roostking:

I took this to mean if you can smell chlorine in the lobby they're Probably fighting a nasty algae infection.

No actually GWJ is right. Combined Chlorine is what smells, which is what happens when chlorine bonds with something in the water. If you can smell that, they need to shock the water.

It's tougher with an inside pool because you dont have UV to burn off some of the chlorine so shocking it is a tougher process.

Maybe just print it out at home and tape the sheets together?

    #5098 1 year ago

If you can't print it at home and tape the sheets together. Get out a projector and open that image on the computer, fiddle with it until it matches the dimensions it should and trace it on the wood.

    #5279 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

hopefully a step up from a homebrew project

There's a wide range of craftsmanship in homebrew and I can pretty much guess Trailer Trash will not be near the top of that range. However, a "working" game does get you above the lower end of the range.

    Quoted from PantherCityPins:

I actually did notice the propane torch but I assumed you planted it as a troll.

Are you just messing with us on this one?

    Quoted from mof:

Excuse me -- but expiration dates are often just "suggestions"
Don't look in my fridge. I tend to throw things out whenever I move. That's my expiration date on some items...

I'm certainly not judging and I agree you have to decide if things have expired yourself. 5 years seems like a long time and I'm hoping for a pic of the sauce.

    #5591 1 year ago

If we could avoid arguing about politics, I think that covers a lot of ground toward keeping this train rolling. Keep the snark to a minimum and let's get back to some workshop hot plate recipes....

Can you get skirt steak up by you GWJ? It's usually a pretty cheap cut (or used to be) and easy to cook in various ways.

    #5597 1 year ago

You can even get those bag liners that go in the crock pot so you dont have to clean it.

How is the color of the ham not a bigger topic.

    #5828 1 year ago
    Quoted from TreyBo69:

The ham is full of tasty nitrates, that's why it's so pink.
It's a discount pork product. Possibly some food dye in there too to make it look fresher for longer.

I'd be more concerned about the grey bits.

    #6059 1 year ago
    Quoted from jwilson:

I’m beginning to see why John isn’t worried about the timeline - he thinks building the white wood and the game itself is the hard part. Like building it is the end of the project and a fully functional game awaits him once he turns the last screw.

Yep. The first 80% of a project is only 20% of the work. The last 20% of the project is 80% of the work.

I saw the same thing but then thought...those whacky Canadians and their crazy metric system. Looks like it's lined up with the 790 to read at 12mm. (Alas, many of us woodworkers have been bitten by that damn metric plywood thickness. Between nominal and metric, I put a caliper on everything!)
Of course, it could just be a coincidence....or not

I thought about that too, since I use metric in all my CAD work. But why not line it up with 800mm then!?!?!

    #7507 1 year ago

Well this got weird. Let's go back to some fun, what's on the menu today?

    #7602 1 year ago

Glad the trough finally ended up the right direction though.

My son and daughter had their 14th birthday yesterday and we went to a place where my daughter got a grilled cheese with mac & cheese on it, and a side of mac & cheese. I immediately chuckled out loud thinking of you GWJ and had to explain the whole thing to my family.

    Quoted from Beechwood:

I assume you are on hour 2 of the 4 hour explanation...

They weren't nearly as interested as I am though they do understand the concept of homebrew. Spaceballs is one of the games I always have set up in the house and the second game is underway as a collab project with another homebrew friend.

Every time you all analyze deeper it just gets more sad.

It went from the random escapades of some over-confident dude to the analysis of a man reconciling 50+ years of life choices against "I hope people remember me".

Hiya folks. I'm John's Apprentice? or not apprentice? Still a working title it seems. I appreciate the concern for safety though the sincerity of it I'm unsure.
Those pictures are rather unflattering if not entirety because of my self consciousness but i assure you i've picked up power tools before in my lifetime
and i'm not trying to get high off sniffing epoxy and wood dust. Also I'm insanely fortunate to know John. He's honestly a really great dude to work around and with sometimes.

Welcome! I promise most of the people talking about safety are being serious.

It only takes one accident to entirely change your outlook on safety. Wear proper ppe and put that hair up. Protect yourself so you can live a long healthy life.

Nice work on that cabinet so far.

    #8247 1 year ago
    Quoted from AviRoo:

n other news i think the day went pretty well. Put some Epoxy on the cabinet and i think i got the shape of it down though i'll probably be eating those words after the tape is torn off. The paint looks 'okay' like it's passable perhaps it's just because it still needs a coat but god damn it's easy to chip or something. put some painters tape by the epoxy to shape it properly and little patch of paint came with it. Maybe i'm just too much of a perfectionist. Expecting too much out of a cabinet that's older then me two fold.

Easy to peel off/chip usually means either the surface needed/needs more prep or the paint isn't the right type for the surface. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself or the cab though, you are learning and you'll get more experience as you go!

    #8249 1 year ago
    Quoted from AviRoo:

Ah crap I hope not. we were going to get Glossy black but that wasn't an option so we ended up getting Semi-Gloss black. I think it's partially latex but John was the one that picked it out so I'm sure it's proper. mind you that was yesterday or the day before so oh well. Self deprecation is my favourite past-time, Can't help it. Tis a slow but fun journey.

GWJ might have some alternatives to touch it up, but if the areas that have peeled keep bothering you, you can always go back to them and sand a little more in the area then hit it with some kind of neutralizing primer like a kilz (or whatever the canadian equivalent is). That would give the latex something to lock on to.

I'm guessing as old as the cab is, it has absorbed some stuff over it's lifetime.

Kudos to you Avi for putting the hair back! Much safer!

What's that pachinko machine on the left of the pic?

    #8510 1 year ago

Parts get expensive fast. You can price yourself out of any profit on a restore pretty quickly these days unfortunately.

Can I offer some tips for that cabinet paint? I think there are a couple minor things that are adding up to you not being super happy with it and maybe these will help you for next time.

Since it looks like a laminate you are painting over, you definitely want to sand like you did! Not sure what grit you used, but I usually use a decently heavy grit like 120 grit. You definitely don't want it to be super slick when you finish sanding. Then a couple coats of primer and gentler sanding to smooth any rough spots. The primer is important with the laminate so paints like latex paint can stick really well everywhere.

I think you are probably unsatisfied with the surface finish (orange peel/etc...) because the paint is too thick. A lot of the house latex paints will be like "one-coat" paints which makes them super thick. I usually mix in some floetrol or something to thin them out for applications like on a cabinet. It'll allow it to have some self-levelling qualities.

Don't let minor things get you down too much! Especially with your first attempts. The only way to get the experience is just raw hours of doing things and figuring out techniques to get exactly what you want in the end. Keep it up Avi!

    #8568 1 year ago
    Quoted from vdojaq:

With all the subtle changes on the playfield with posts and lanes, making plastics is going to be fun because you can throw the original drawing dimensions out the window at this point.

I've been wondering how these changes are going to make it back into the digital design, so it could be cut on a CNC machine.

    Quoted from Beechwood:

CNC'd, printed and cleared by Xmas. We need a holiday miracle, Santa!

My project partner and I already have completed cabinets, cleared/populated white woods, and we are working out lighting and final ramp tweaks.

I am unsure if our game will make it to SFGE in July of 2023.

But, to be fair, neither of us are fueled by super-ham and beer.

Get some of that wiring going!

    #8977 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

Try to meet the end of month deadline for a flipping pin.

What's the plan for wiring the whitewood? Going to go through the multimorphic boards so you can have autofire on slings and pops and stuff, or just hard wiring flippers to 48V?

    #8979 1 year ago
    Quoted from TreyBo69:

Can you hard wire single would coils? I would think they'd tear themselves up pretty quickly...

Ah I didn't realize he had single wound flippers. You could still do it with an EOS and no flipper hold just to pop a ball around, but way less than optimal.

    #9056 1 year ago

Did Avi get paid back for the pandora's box?

    #9124 1 year ago
    Quoted from Roostking:

I still think there's a second pin being built behind the scenes and maybe not by John.

Are we reading the same thread?

    #9203 1 year ago

My local stores like Harris Teeter and Publix all do the discount stickers the same way. Multiples mean multiple off, etc...

We still have one of the "everything's expired" stores that my wife will hit like once every couple months to scoop up some snacks. Chips, crackers, cookies, etc.. all stay fine beyond the best buy date for a while and my kids and their friends don't care.

    #9247 1 year ago
    Quoted from homebrood:

No problem with that as long as you have extra napkins!!!

What do you think the crates of appliance cleaner are for.

    #9326 1 year ago

We would find a stash every couple years in boy scouts, doing Adopt-A-Highway cleanup style programs.

    #9346 1 year ago
    Quoted from ultimategameroom:

Was it Larry David or Howard Stern who talked about having a “ shovel buddy” ? This was someone who you would give a key to your home or apartment who was to immediately go and remove your porn stash if you died so your family members or relatives wouldn’t find it when going thru your belongings.

These days it's the person that will go home and clear your browser history.

Regarding the build. 5 wires? That's it? GWJ you were so gung-ho to get this thing flipping and now pretty much all progress has stopped. What's up with that?

    #9362 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

Avi got some more wires ready for the weekend.

How come you are reusing decades old wires instead of just buying new spools of wire? Especially since someone else is paying?

What's the new deadline you think it'll be flipping by?

    14
    #9369 1 year ago

It's a little bit of a bummer to see the outlook go from "it's my dream to build a game" to not taking it very seriously.

    #9396 1 year ago
    Quoted from TreyBo69:

It’s not my project or money, I could care less about deadlines. We’re just friends in a work shop talking friendly shit.

This exactly. I don't care if it actually gets done or not (because I'm probably in the small group that thinks it will never be finished).

I wouldn't throw shade about deadlines if GWJ hadn't kept setting them and blowing right through them.

    #9398 1 year ago
    Quoted from AviRoo:

Apologies. I may of misspoken. If GWJ himself is setting the deadlines then i'm a dummie and forget entirely what i said. I had the impression it was more as though GWJ was being pressured into making deadlines. That's on me.

No worries Avi, like Trey said it's mostly harmless poking. GWJ came off really strong in the start and I think has had to realize a lot of that just wasn't true or feasible. Scope underestimation happens to everyone.

    #9503 1 year ago
    Quoted from jwilson:

Gee, I wonder why he’s sick all the time.
    [quoted image]

Riding the bus, going to the grocery store and mcdonalds almost every day, playing the gambling machines, touching and fixing games at bars, etc...

All of them are germ factories, especially if you aren't washing your hands constantly. Regular windex also does nothing to disinfect surfaces, so there's that.

    #9599 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

I usually just give the wife a hundred. Xmas is for kids & women.

    #9664 1 year ago
    Quoted from blueberryjohnson:

So it seems that Avi is now building the machine.

Well this is just the test.

Instead of building the actual wiring harness as they go, they are just doing this throw away one that has to be completely undone and rebuilt from scratch on the next whitewood.

    #9675 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

The wiring will be all new for the printed & finish clear coated playfield in January 2023. I will also be using connectors to each coil part in the build.

I don't know why you keep putting deadlines on yourself.

    34
    #9829 1 year ago

So I guess the answer to "why is wiring taking so long" is "nobody knew how to do it."

    #9834 1 year ago
    Quoted from TreyBo69:

I seriously recommend taking a pause, reading the documentation (then re-reading it again), studying that one wiring example, and then trying to sketch it out for yourself.
Feel free to upload your sketch for comment/concerns.

    Quoted from Mbecker:

Taking the bull by the horns, I like it Avi!
I don't think you'll get it flipping today but you can def. make a lot of progress towards that. I would start with the PSUs.. you'll probably want terminal blocks to distribute power around unless you want to do it quick-like (I guess this will all be redone later.. but if it was done right now, it wouldn't have to be) with the twist-lock style electrical connectors for splicing wires. Get the power entry, p3-roc, sw16, and a coil board hooked up and everything grounded. You can get the software side going as well then.. you dont need coils hooked up yet.

It would be very wise to listen to advice like this.

    #9846 1 year ago
    Quoted from TreyBo69:

    Yeah, Avi shows great initiative.

He does. He is also a nice friend for being willing to take the shot on the wiring.

    Are these considered funeral sandwiches?

Perhaps i'm deadly wrong but i'm positive John knows how to program it.

Even as an onlooker, I can tell you this is the most wrong you've been in your life, lol.

    #9926 1 year ago
    Quoted from BeachPickle:

Does anyone know if any of these systems will operate on a Mac OS?
Let’s say someone wanted to develop and test a new game layout and rule set. What’s the best way to do that virtually before even touching a white wood? Do these files then port to CNC for playfield cutting, and to the controllers for running the physical game? If so, that is beyond cool.

MPF runs on mac no problem. You can also use the keyboard to simulate switch hits, so you can code a vast majority of the game without having a physical game done or near you. MPF comes with a "smart virtual hardware" platform that can simulate having real hardware.

You are probably mainly asking about some form of virtual pin integration like integrating VPX to MPF so you can design your pin in VPX and code it in MPF, then move to the real world. Surprise, it does that too.

    https://docs.missionpinball.org/en/latest/hardware/virtual/virtual_pinball_vpx.html

    #9928 1 year ago
    Quoted from PantherCityPins:

Is there really a need for a white wood if the game has been heavily tested in VPX?

I haven't personally used VPX, but I've heard from other homebrewers it does work decently well, though you can imagine there some tweaks that have to be made.

If memory serves correctly, didn't Nightmare Before Christmas start out as a virtual design for testing?

    #9942 1 year ago
    Quoted from BMore-Pinball:

My bad ... you are all good.
    The leap should be simple

Technically you don't even write code for 99% of MPF, you are just building YAML config files.

MPF is actually really easy and if GWJ can focus on following each step of the tutorial carefully and learning some stuff, he can get the game flipping.

Still might go back with the new Fast Pinball system since it looks like Santa Claus has showed up there. They would be floored to be associated with this build

I don't understand what the problem with the multimorphic stuff is, unless you just can't figure out how to wire it or something and think the FAST stuff is easier?

Why would you waste another $1000 to switch control systems?

Pretty nasty visual, sitting there making out with an old chicken salad sandwich and watching vintage porn "for the plot".

Maybe we just drop that aspect, lol.

I have a wood allergy, & Avi was at war with some MDF.

MDF dust is toxic, please be careful with that stuff!

There is no way a flipping game in a cabinet shows up to tpf.

My guess is it won't even be completely flipping by then. Maybe flippers hooked up, but that's it.

Which whitewood will be at TPF?

Surely not the one with the 40 year old rats nest of wires that was just going to be used for testing? It'll be the one with "a connector on every mech" right? It hasn't even been cut to fit in a cabinet or had side rails put on it.

Where's the display? Where's the sound system? What about the lighting system? Where are the inserts and GI lights?

What about all the little brackets and bolts you need to get a playfield into a cabinet and hung on the lockdown receiver? I feel like there are a lot more PBL orders in the future.

As others have said there's a million things that could be done to get closer to the goal of having -something- at TPF. Right now it's just being ignored in favor of sobeys, beer and porn jokes.

Get this show together and build something you can be proud of.

    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

Just got a call that I am still in the running to get a Fulltime Electronics Apprentice for up to 2+ months in January. Job placement, or just experience.

I'm hoping the universe does not curse a young intern with this situation.

Please let them find one where they can actually gain electronics experience and grow as a professional.

EDIT: I say this because if the intern is looking for EIT time in order to pass a PE test or licensure test, I would really make sure hours spent with GWJ count toward the experience requirement.
