He's just being inconsistent in explaining his beer napkin plan. John isn't a fraudster. He's just incompetent. If you invest, you'll lose all your money and get an unfinished prototype worse than magic girl, but he will try.
John's the guy you see at the bus stop who was dropped on his head as a child. He'll tell you stories that you know are untrue while you struggle to interrupt and escape. John's new favorite hobby is to tell his stories on the internet. Pinball stories John's favorite stories because someone showed him the underside of a pinball machine long, long ago. He thinks they are the neatest things in the whole world.
Just have buy-in rates:
Pro - minimal features with "Mini Whale" placard - 10k
Premium - almost all features - "Whale" placard - 50k
LE - loaded custom game with "The Greatwich Big Whale" placard - 100k
I trust each customer would at least recieve the placard.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Sorry no premium, no middle whale choice.
Damn. I was contemplating being a middle whale. Guess I'll have to spend my money elsewhere...
Who is going to code this? The coder will have 6 months and no finalized design or finalized ruleset. So in reality, the coder will have max 3 months to code an entire machine. An experienced coder would charge a whale of a fee, so it looks like this cheaper person will need to learn mpf in that three months too. Ludicrous.
And the shallow code line doesn't cut it. The game still needs all the basics, which aren't very basic, development-wise.
This issue alone almost guarantees that this game will not be even close to done in 6 months. John, plan for a year at the very, very least.
Well, we don't wish you too fail. We're just 110% positive that you will with your current plan. At least we can look forward to the pinside drama.
I second that a simple go fund me would be a better approach, John.
I wouldn't have donated before, but I will now if you'll just stop contacting professionals. I'm sure if David Fix read this thread, he'd be horrified. Jessica would be upset too. You're 2 for 2!
Quoted from WARLOCK:This poser (poster) does not represent East Coasters from Canada very well at all. Sorry Canada and the world at large.
Or (he) doesn't represent Canadians at ALL in general IMHO. I have made only 20 posts now here in all my years on Pinside.
This is embarrassing, and ridiculous: and this is my last post here other than perhaps to post pins for sale. (and Keisler - FU - and keep your downposts to yourself and generally ignore Moving Pictures please and his "whatever" agenda...)
My apologies for all my fellow Canadians who did have to endure this, and to everyone else in the world having to read all of this nonesense. Sincere CANADIAN apologies to everyone on behalf of this 1 individual who seems to have a dream that makes no sense to anyone. I am truly sorry and apologize for ALL Canadians here.
All the very best my friends. (I ignored the last 1024 posts - read none of it) and: I know, it must seem fun...but really, you are encouraging him further for no particular purpose other than amusement and entertainment.
Cheers>Salut. And hopefully all done. (I certainly am.) I haven't looked here since I posted last, and perhaps I may look in @2023. But maybe not, thanks. All the very best.
Several of my friends said "you are not doing Pinside right" regarding my posts: so thanks and awesome, I have done it wrong for 7 years in 20 posts. I'm out.
I think you have it wrong. Canadians celebrate diversity. We love everyone, even our mutants.
As I've said before, John is a Canadian treasure.
Quoted from Roostking:Lol. Ok lil bro."Patting on head".
As much as I disagree with his comment, yours isn't helping your position at all...
Quoted from pookycade:I forgot to log in on one of my browsers. I had to see Iceman’s posts. I made sure I didn’t repeat that mistake again.
You guys need to realize that ice provides a lot of entertainment in pinside.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:The history of pinball most in the industry were drinkers.
I was chatting with Gary, and he told me he used to go swimming all the time. He also said he saw Pat Lawlor and George Gomez in the same pool at the same time. Real story. Industry insiders go swimming. Most people don't realize this.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Contrary to popular opinion here I do not depend on alcohol. I like to drink beer, seems like a lot more than some dumb world survey. Which would imply that you fall into a heavy drinker category.
Yeah, statistics are just plain silly.
Go the jpop route for theme:
Dayglow Cosmic redneck Slutland
Don't forget to add a Ferris wheel at the back. I'm sure cheap beer will apply easily.
Quoted from benheck:Do a GoFundMe and make a generic Trailer Trash pin.
Dayglow Cosmic redneck Slutland
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Going to bed, & I will follow Kims advice about bread crumbs. Not going to give any more hints or confirmation on the artist unless the dots are crossed this month. Had 8 beers tonight to celebrate!
Thanks for the beer count. Keep them coming.
Quoted from Beechwood:That has hangover written all over it.
Along with diabetes and a stroke from vomit pressure.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Yes it is a long shot. But you would think they have to give the info to the boys themselves of a product proposition. I do not think they can just say NO, & be done for it. But what do I know about the license dance routine.
You've seen the routine. They said no. They are not going to talk to "the boys." Even if you knew "the boys", you wouldn't get this strange prototype big whale license you're after. They don't give out licenses for non-funded hobby projects.
Why do they have licensing? TOO MAKE MONEY.
Quoted from Dee-Bow:That was 3 separate digs there! Haha..well played. It almost seems personal you're so adamant with your agenda. Clearly a nearly impossible goal he has set out for himself.. but the abuse he's taking for sharing it is astounding to me! I keep trying to shut up and i swear i will stop telling you to do the same! Enjoy the show!
Dude, relax. We're on an internet forum. Ben is allowed to have his opinion. It's pretty much unanimous that gwj's plan was/is ridiculous. If I come up with something similar, I deserve some critical feedback.
No beers for me today. It's hot, but none today.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:The build is 6 months, the same old story I keep having to explain. This Saturday the Go Fund Me can start. The known industry designer will likely get started as soon as they are announced. September 1 is the start for me, & I have enough stuff going on for the month.
The designer is getting paid, along with the rest of the team, & contractors. The build time is 6 months, start to finish.
How is this go fund me going to work? Are you setting it up? I'd recommend that you do it yourself.
Quoted from vdojaq:Only one seeking and creating drama is you shit stirring the pot. STFU and throw some funds at the go fund me when it goes live Saturday.
How is it going live Saturday?
Quoted from vdojaq:Becomes active, gets started, becomes reality on Saturday.
Who is managing it? It should be John.
Strange angle to have someone manage your money anyway, John. I'd donate to your own go fund me. Start one up. It's easy.
If not, stay the course. DO IT JOHN'S WAY!
Quoted from damageinc55:Anyone asked this question yet?
John,
Do you know what a gofundme is?
It's a blank check to do whatever the fuck you want. No strings attached. you have like 100 people here willing to toss a bunch of cash your way to drink beer and try to make a pin.
Yes, but I believe John believes that he is starting a business, not a hobby.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:There will be no TPB pinball machine without permission. Does not look like it will happen so on to Trailer Trash. Could be 1 or up to 10. The build clock starts September 1. There is no new orders after September 1 with Trailer Trash, you are in with the pod or out. Private build over the 6 months. People that get in can sell their spot to others at any time. Small group so not a problem.
I still look at the advice given here. But I am the captain of the boat, smooth sailing or she runs aground. The Big Whale hunt has ended, on with the pod.
Good luck captain. I see a grand future on the high seas!
Norris is a great designer. I love my Gladiators. The design is its redeeming feature.
Wonder what the first hints of the unforeseen extended deadline will be. Maybe a couple months into the build we'll get some breadcrumbs after gwj has 3 beers at his favourite pub and 2 more at a local restaurant.
What a waste using this terrible theme.
John, do Terraform Mars or another cool space theme. Easy to do cool music, and everyone loves spaceships. Nobody wants a politically incorrect adult-only trash theme.
Quoted from cdnpinbacon:Me too..Still I would he ashamed to tell my fellow red necks I was making a Trailer Trash pin. Change the name I.m.o
I already suggested a space theme and was down voted.
Trailer Trash may sound fine alongside trailer park boys, but no one is going to want it when they see the final product on its own. One positive is that the chances of a final product coming to completion is close to zero.
Quoted from TreyBo69:I'll happily donate some pinball parts from my homebrew box of parts to John. A ball trough and some old flipper mechs should get him going... I could toss in some random ramp parts if he goes Franken Stern Pro model
What if it was Trailer Park Aliens from Outer Space? Then you can do all the bad taste jokes, stereotypes, etc... but it's ok because the little people are purple, have tentacles, and the confederate flag hats are references to a fictional planetary confederacy that lost the intergalactic civil war over robot rights.
It's all a bunch of nonsense that won't happen. So we might as well really lean into the bad idea
Haha, I like it.
Quoted from Only_Pinball:If this thread is now dead, I will miss the daily beer counts.
Agreed. They really held the thread together.
Best of luck to you, John.
I'd be getting your rules down now. By that, I mean today. You can start coding the basics with only a design. The coding is what I see as your biggest challenge, given your schedule. It's not easy, and if your coder isn't experienced, bug chasing can eat up time fast.
As others have said, stay away from a graphic display.
Do you have someone experienced in sound engineering? Even something as simple as normalization, balance and ducking can be a time-suck for a novice.
Personally, I think your theme is a very poor choice. Listen to you potential customers. What do they want?
I'm rooting for you, but I see some huge black holes in your plan.
If it is now a bare bones 80s solid state that is shallow as hell, this can be achieved in six months. I feel like the goal post was nudged a tiny bit though.
Thanks for ruining the beer counts again, guys.
DON'T LISTEN TO THEM JOHN. SOME OF US APPRECIATE THE BEER COUNTS!!!!!
Quoted from greenhornet:to the best of my recollection, Frank Gigliotti laid out the rules and completed the initial programming for legends of vahalla before a prototype was even built. it is absurd to believe that rules and programming cant be contemplated and coded without access to an actual game.
Yeah, mpf has the monitor program where you can use a pic of your pf and use your keyboard to run the game. Ball counts can get a little out of whack, but this simple layout could be coded 80%+ without a machine. It is ideal to have a machine, for sure though.
Quoted from iceman44:Step 4. Where is your next game? It’s been 8 years now.
IF it ever sees the light of day, which I highly doubt because Of AMH and you just are so far down below a guy like Elwin, I wouldn’t ever think about buying it Benny
Yet you punch down on poor GWJ. An easy target? Because the pinball elites are crushing you ? I don’t know
So trim your hedges and keep that chip on your shoulder. No hoper
You need to stop and worry about yourself after the terrible business decisions you have already made
Remember, it’s YOU and the Blueberry boys that just can’t move on with life. Pitiful really
Quoted from greatwichjohn:I do not like Yoga, but I like to drink beer.
Greatwich quote of the day.
John, who is going to code your machine, and what is your budget to pay them? This person is going to have to work for almost free...
Quoted from Rarehero:I’ve been in this hobby for a long time - not once have I ever heard anyone talk about Jon Norris or pine for a new Jon Norris game. No offense, Jon.
Clearly too long. Have some fucking respect keyboard warrior. I like quite a few of Jon's games and I've owned one for years.
Quoted from Mr68:Which one have you kept?
I've been seeking a Robo-War.
Gladiators. The pf design is crazy good. Read the reviews. I haven't played robo-war. I'll have to check it out.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:My wife wants to give me beer #13 before bedtime. I still believe someone screwed me on the TPB license. We will see in the future if that was the case.
Nice beer count, John!
Quoted from Beechwood:I've followed you for quite some time, and I respect your perspective because you are very intelligent and make valid points and I have to say you have really turned negative like a boomer losing his mental acuity lately.
I get the points you are making, but it seems you are obsessed with drilling the points to the marrow of the bone. Dude, it's only pinball. Maybe lighten up just a touch???
Agreed. Please, chill out and be less aggressive. Hugs, not drugs.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:As for the challenge from Pinball Adventures feel free to post your update pictures here. People can see the difference between a one man build with help from contractors. Same with the Ballarama couple over the next 6 months.
Please, for the love of God, Keep that shit in its own train wreck thread.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:When I finally sold my business over a year ago to Fantastic Pinball I was in a serious financial crisis working on: Seawitch (30) & Star Gazer (18) playfields in production. Greg Walker stepped in to buy me out, take care of the few remaining Seawitch playfield customers (which has been done), & pay the last bill for cutting the playfields. I had all the inserts done & they were getting ready for printing. Over the years I personally had to get inserts done like the classic Stern yellow arrow (which CPR got 700 for their production of their titles that use them), & trans blue in 3/4" & 1" by the thousands. Pinball production is very hard, & I do know something from my last 15 years. Plus working on hundreds of games the last 27 years.
Fantastic Pinball will do the printing & finish clear coats of the build for playfields.
But what is the beer count?
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Think I will keep drinking until my medical doctor gets serious concerns.
Easily makes top 5 GWJ quotes.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:More info that drinking can lead to cancer. Breathing air probably is not good for you either. The world is going crazy!

"Keeps her happy, & still only wife I have had or could afford."
"Wish I was drinking some beer today. Keep the economy going."
Day one workload:
Answer door.
Unbox package.
With this kind of urgency, you're going to finish early!
Quoted from greatwichjohn:It is going to be a slow build & nothing to be worried about.
A slow 6 month build...
Quoted from Dee-Bow:You're right.. we've had enough. You're one of the last minions left btw.
[quoted image]
Take it to pm.
Guys, it's a slow 6 month build. Relax. Week one or a little longer will be dedicated to getting a dwg file sorted. Things are running according to the plan!
Quoted from HoakyPoaky:I came here for the pinball build drama..........but these supper updates are the real gem here.
Frequent grocery store hunts for bargain discounted meats, then bragging about consuming long expired products. Repulsive electric grill aluminum foil cooking methods that could result in a catastrophic explosive fireball. The pondering of what causes more cancer......carcinogens produced from open-flame grilling, or a lifetime of excessive cured meat nitrate consumption. It's just fascinating.
The unrelated side topics are just the icing on the cake. What a thread.
Like I've said, John is a Canadian treasure. Everything is going to plan!
Quoted from steve-o:Zinc is one of the important the keys.
recent analysis stopped short of recommending zinc. None of the studies analyzed had enough participants to meet a high standard of proof. Also, the studies used different zinc dosages and preparations (lozenges or syrup) for different lengths of time. As a result, it's not clear what the effective dose and treatment schedule would be.
Zinc — especially in lozenge form — has side effects, including nausea or a bad taste in the mouth. Many people who used zinc nasal sprays suffered a permanent loss of smell. For this reason, Mayo Clinic doctors caution against using such sprays.
In addition, large amounts of zinc are toxic and can cause copper deficiency, anemia and damage to the nervous system.
For now, the safest course is to talk to your doctor before considering the use of zinc to prevent or reduce the length of colds.
Timed based gameplay is likely the worst idea I've ever heard for a ruleset. Can't wait to see it implemented!
Quoted from greatwichjohn:My wife likes to drink alone in her bedroom listening to music or shows.
#greatwichquote
Quoted from greatwichjohn:I do keep the wife happy. Will get her next suitcase of bud cans (36) on Monday. I get the wrath when the beer runs out in the slum apartment fridge.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:We saved all her bags of her hardboiled eggs, & her frozen dinners without power for 48 hours.
#greatwichquote
You guys keep pushing for common sense, something John is unable to provide. Please try to empathize.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Enjoy my life at the numerous bars if I can afford it, nickel bets at times for amusement since I rarely win, & looking for cheap discount food.
#greatwichquote
Quoted from greatwichjohn:My dead mother & wife always got on my case with destroying dud computers with the hammer.
#greatwichquote
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Yes my mom & wife use to say I had anger management issues with crap computers that I destroyed with the hammer. Next day go to the store & get another cheap replacement. The last number of years I refuse to buy protection against virus, same results maybe better. I always refuse protection insurance plan, tell them I will smash the computer. Previous times I took my computer in for service wasted money, & only lasted a few months. Had the windows blue screen of death a few times. Lately it was endless windows updates. Have more hot dogs ready for supper. Nice fall day here, light winds & almost 70 degrees.
I'm like that with cars. If the battery fails, I just light the whole car on fire and go buy a new cheap one. Same goes if the starter, tires etc. fail. I just siphon out all the expensive Canadian fuel, dump a little on the driver's seat, light it up and move on to the next cheap one. The expensive fuel goes into the next cheap car.
Not sure how my dead mother and wife feel about the fires, however.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:This bar has railroad tracks near the back patio, watch the smokers, or look for deer in the city. Also has a dog grooming service next door, watch the dogs & usually the female owners. Some dogs like to be groomed, & others put up a fight.
#greatwichquote
Quoted from vdojaq:Only you can change this. We all sit here and armchair quarterback you, but only YOU can make the plays.
Keep pouring it on. I think you're getting through to him!
Quoted from pinballinreno:Still, deeply saddening...
Yeah, I get your point. I scrubbed that post. You're too quick!
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Wish I was in the porn business, but no that was not a life goal. I just enjoy the shows (old VHS movies).
#greatwichquote
Holy sheeeetrock! You don't have to be rocket appliances to build a ping pong machine. Keep the beer counts and discount food pics coming GWJ!
"Running for the bus, & the door closes. Tap on the window but the bus pulls away, so I put a good pounding on the tempered glass."
#greatwichquote
Give us a non-x-rated pic of an 80s porn star on your tube screen. I'd like to see some feathered hair and blue eyeshadow.
I had no idea that there are people who live almost exclusively off of grocery store premade pseudo- meals. I always thought those were reserved for road trips and BBQs when you're behind schedule. Learn something new from GWJ every day.
I've previously coded in Java, C, C++ and Python. MPF and the way it supports hardware was still a learning curve. There is a LOT of data to get through to understand the hundreds of operations and tweaks in the framework. That's before you get to bugs in your code etc.
If anyone said they were going to learn mpf and code a basic game for tpf, I'd tell them that unless you're working on this 8/40+, you're nuts.
I'm 3/4 done a retheme, and I'm well over 1000 hours. Mine's way more complex, but there is no way this game will be close to done any time soon. I'd guess June at the very earliest. That's only if the pace picks up.
GWJ makes me feel like a FUCKING PUSSY. I lived like him for a short while in my 20s, but my body said, "keep it up, buddy, and I'll shut down the fucking ticker."
It's all in the genes, or not!
Glad to see that the supply issue was fixed by going through the complex maze of contacting the primary supplier. Handling supply orders is one of the toughest parts of pinball. GWJ for the win! Or not!
Not to discourage, but Avi, ask yourself if you want to dedicate more than a year of your life to building a machine. Experienced pinball guys take that long or longer. It's a Herculean task, especially if you're new to wiring and pinball architecture. You might want to just help Captain Car Crash try to finish his to get your feet wet.
