I’d bet if Tim Arnold ever decided to sell The Pinball Circus it would go for $100k.

    Quoted from Beechwood:

After 1,000 posts in this thread, anyone who reads them and decides to invest can't be saved anyway.
I think the brilliance of Johns' convoluted plan is that he continues to use the term whale, even after being told it is offensive and off-putting. His use of the word is fitting, because, by his own admission, this may never happen. A whale gives no shit about the money because they are "gamblers" and $100k is nothing.
I think that is why he is not asking for hard working, blue collar less wealthy people to pony up $$$$, just people who can lose it and not think twice.
Makes no sense to me, but hey... dreamers can't be stopped from dreaming.

Even if someone has $100k to piss away on pinball...it still doesn't make sense.

$100k for a horrible theme made by a delusional maniac that will clearly never get finished.

    or

10-20 pinball machines that actually exist.

Why even take this "gamble"? Just buy a bunch of Bally/Williams/Stern/JJP/Spooky games. Even some rare ones and prototypes, if that's a thing that's important to you.

None of this makes sense. Maybe that is why it is so entertaining to watch unfold.

If he finds a whale and makes it happen, I will poop my pants in the literal sense. Still would be fascinating to see him succeed.

Not replying to the individual here but the sentiment.

It’s because he is looking for the guy that already has 25 of the above mentioned games and maybe doesn’t care about another 25 of those same games?

Regardless of how plausible it is he’s def going after the right target market of people that don’t care if they blow $$$ on the roll of the dice. Even if you need to hit boxcars! Lol

It’s entertaining as well. Is it not?

Ever watch somebody at the craps table in Vegas drop $1 million on one roll. Crap out and then get another marker? I have. Unreal thinking

There is always a big crowd standing around that table. Is it stupid to lose that kind of money in 5 minutes? To us, sure it is. To that guy, he’s a “whale”.

And Vegas is where the term “whale” is commonly used with the casinos.

We have whales at the casino in town along with all kinds of guys having private poker nights. I just got back from my local, 2 drinks of my favorite plus a tip was $7.50 US Plus you got to see the free comic club out on the street. Since it is Friday night going to relax at another local friends house with nice games & have more adult beverages with friends.

The lucky few that get in with the pod will have the last laugh. I cannot wait to party it up in Texas in March 2023, SXSW & TPF. Unfortunately there will be no Dutch Pinball hotel room drinking fun. You will have to play at my brothers house or on the floor at TPF. I still remember poor Haggis trying to get Celts together for the show. Even Kevin with help got a few pins built in the basement.

Good to see you guys not trashing Fast Pinball, or the other numerous parts vendors I will use & PAY!

Ben: Myself & a bunch of people I know cannot draw anything at all. Like I keep saying the art will be done by some one trained or a expert in art. Must be time to shit on all the retired pinball artists not working anymore.

    What is delusional disorder?

Delusional disorder is a type of psychotic disorder. Its main symptom is the presence of one or more delusions.

A delusion is an unshakable belief in something that’s untrue. The belief isn’t a part of the person’s culture or subculture, and almost everyone else knows this belief to be false.

People with delusional disorder often experience non-bizarre delusions. Non-bizarre delusions involve situations that could possibly occur in real life. These delusions usually involve the misinterpretation of perceptions or experiences. In reality, these situations are either untrue or are highly exaggerated.

Another characteristic of this condition is that the person often lacks self-awareness that their delusions are problematic. They’re unable to accept that their delusions are irrational or inaccurate, even if they recognize that other people would describe their delusions this way.

Like I say lots of smart people here. I do have a history of making backglass & playfields, restoring, & servicing games for many years. Along with working with many contractors & vendors.

Listen, I am cheap. If anyone would like to just hand out some stupid money, I will take $25K and gamble it away in Vegas and promise 50% of my winnings to the mini whale. So, if I wager the $25K and win $50K, I will give you your $25K back. If I lose, well, thanks for playing.

I am a proficient sports gambler and poker player.

    Who's in?

    #1013 1 year ago

Is showing off pins at SXSW a thing? Never heard of this before.

And it’s not even at the actual SXSW. How do you market the attendees there to come out to your brother’s house to look at a pinball machine based on a Canadian TV show most Americans have never heard of?

    #1014 1 year ago

"Captain! There not be whales here!"

    #1015 1 year ago

Remember Iceman lives in Texas, he may be the backer, he may be the big whale!

Are you in for trailer park boys or you're looking for some custom?

    #1016 1 year ago
    Quoted from greatwichjohn:

    Whales are gamblers.

I disagree. Whales are players who have deep pockets and are willing to dive deeper than the competition. They outspend everyone else and end up being able to stay under the longest before the need to surface. They also coincidentally end up supporting the rest of the pod thru great financial sacrifice.

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

    #1019 1 year ago

Just because whales lose large sums of money doesn’t mean they don’t get anything in return. They get free rooms, shows, shopping trips, excursions, flown in and out on the casinos private jet, rebates on their losses and so much more- oh and occasionally they win millions of dollars. In John’s world they get nothing or an overpriced home brew.

    #1020 1 year ago

Back home from a good night of my favorite adult beverage. Like I say you guys are going nuts, I do not have the big whale at this time. But I have enough mini whales to move along with this project unless it is terminated. Pinball is hard, but it can be done.

Sure do hope you are exaggerating here on the beer consumption. You are going to blow out your liver and trust me liver failure is not a nice way to go.

    #1022 1 year ago

Not a alcoholic like people prefer to think. Been drinking quantities of beer since I was 19, the legal age in Canada. Just like Animal House, back in my college days. Still remember the Miami Vice era, lines of you know what being used.

Just over a week to go for the deadline.

Whether it’s John or whomever why make it so personal when you have no clue?

What is your excuse? I really don’t get it.

Tell us about your life success story.

    You run a pinball arcade?

I think he's expressing concern for John's health, based on statements that John has made.

Is he or you his doctor? Neither you or anybody else here is his Mama.

Do you not see the idiocy of it all?

    You should try decaff.

Repeated heavy drinking is bad for anyone's health.
I finished my period of that shortly after college.

Congrats but no one needs your advice either. Lol

“Heavy drinking”? Do you have a problem? Not sure we believe you “after college”

How the F would you know? What is your success story ?

What are you going to try?

So you are the expert from reading his posts? And it makes you feel better to slam him?

Just an easy target? Has he been a dick to anybody?

    NOPE

    #1030 1 year ago

I think you implied he needs help
    And he’s an alcoholic ?

Most people here seem to think that hammering John makes them feel better about themselves.

Industry folks like Ben? Let your work speak for itself if it does and don’t “punch down” if you are above it all.

The rest of the mini mob? Same crew over and over.

    Kind of sad really

Does anyone really think they are somehow “saving people” from disaster?

    Nothing more than entertainment.

    #1032 1 year ago
    Quoted from iceman44:

I stated that another poster seems to have inferred that from John's posts.
I then said that, if true, heavy drinking is not good for anyone's health.
I did not say anything about anyone needing help.
John seems like a nice guy.
I hope he lives a long, happy, healthy life.
I don't think his plan will work.

Why would you think “If that’s true”? They have no clue other than the deficiencies in their own imperfect lives.

Especially considering the source like Rare?

You don’t think his plan will work? Many would agree.

He does seem like a nice guy.

And yet we go on and on. He has taken it all in stride. Sad sacks like Rare? Who knows.

See I don’t care what the mini mob cancel group thinks. They are irrelevant

    #1034 1 year ago

Ah, Iceman's posts. The deeproot shill. The only Pinsider I ignore. I can't read what he says, but I can infer it. Like how NASA profiles exo-planets by how they affect the gravitational wobble of the stars they orbit.

Go bravely into that dark night, ye Mini Whale.

I have no idea who or what you are talking about.
My impression of John's habbits is based on John's comments.
They could be exaggerated or an inside joke, or something else. I don't know. That's why I said "If that's true".

    #1037 1 year ago

Can someone, anyone, explain to me why John's original thread was "closed" but this one hasn't been? Aren't both threads fairly identical?

    #1038 1 year ago

I'm pretty certain the moderators are evaluating this thread too.

    #1039 1 year ago

This is about a proposed specific pinball build. The other was a vague solicitation for money

    #1040 1 year ago

To be clear I questioned John’s stated alcohol consumption not as any attack on him personally but out of genuine concern if I am to believe what he written over the last few weeks. Having had a father who died of alcoholism, and taken care of multiple patients with the same, I unfortunately know the storyline all too well and take it very seriously. I will of course accept John’s statement this is not an issue for him at face value.

I separate any of that from the bad idea to take OPM and try to figure out how to build a machine from scratch. There are a myriad of ways he could accomplish his goal as has been suggested by myself and others. But I have to accept there is no dissuading him from his present course. Thus if an investor is thru luck found we shall see it play out in real time. I hope it does not end in the calamity we all fear.

As the story goes, Jpop tricked American Pinball into starting a company and they never saw the big thread on Pinside and had no idea who they got into business with, so anything can happen.

Curious, what are your parameters for labeling a person an alcoholic?

    #1043 1 year ago
    Quoted from BMore-Pinball:

Curious, what are your parameters for labeling a person an alcoholic?

Let's call it an activity. My concern in regards to this build is he likes to engage in this activity frequently which involves a fair amount of time. This does not bode well with his timeline.

It matters not whether this activity is gaming, fishing, or consuming copious amounts of adult beverages. That is concerning when applied to his plan to build this pin.

Do I wish him success, absolutely. Do I think he's scamming people, no. He has been very transparent from the start. Do I think he will succeed given his extremely short timeline, doubtful at best . Will I give him money before seeing a functioning pin? Not a chance. Will someone's else pony up the money? Not my business.

    #1044 1 year ago

John (every day): I love beer and cocaine. I drink every day, all day. I just got back from drinking.

Pinside: John, maybe you should get help.

Iceman: why do you guys think he’s an alcoholic who needs help?!?!

It’s not like it’s some kind of Agatha Christie mystery or Rosetta Stone puzzle. When someone repeatedly states publicly that they have problems with drugs and alcohol I tend to believe them.

Guys my dinking beer just like everyone else in the world is not excessive! We consume a lot of beer in Canada, just like Australia, & many European countries. I turned 58, & my doctor has no worries about me being a ALCOHOLIC! In my region of Eastern Canada, we are known to consume more alcoholic beverages than central Canada. 2-6 cans of beer is not excessive here. Like I have said never got a DUI, never gone to the drunk tank, or emergency. Never called in sick over all my years of drinking beer. So yes there will not be a problem from beer towards pinball production. Will I stop being social & not going to bars or pinball friends NO.

The only medical problems I have is waiting on right hip surgery. Here in Canada if you can still walk you wait. I had knee & foot surgery in the past & might need more in the future. Same thing if you can still be mobile you wait for free surgery in Canada. Which Covid continues to wreck havic on surgery.

About another week for the deadline to get on the list, & then to see if approval is given for the project.

PS, never done cocaine in my life, been exposed to people smoking weed before & now that is legal, do not pop drugs, etc. My only fault is having beer as a vice, & the rare cigar.

That sounds like a Whale of a story to me. Most pinball people know of Jpop from way back. Even Python stated what he thought before he tried taking peoples money.

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

There are no alcoholics in Canada?

Yes there is many, & I guess that I do not fall into that category, Only with people that seem to know more about my health, than medical professionals here. I still remember the old days of flying in Canada & USA. Never got denied boarding on a plane ever! Why do you think there are bars at airports? Most people with serious problems are known by the police or hospitals, because they need serious help.

Back to pinball still 3 mini whales in play, not anyone with TPB license which likely will change if the go ahead on prototype build gets the green light.

Why do you keep name dropping David Fix? It gives you no additional credibility and will result in David never speaking to you again because you are trying to surf off his name repeatedly.
