Looks like the bulbs are just too bright. Seems like swapping in some different LED's would be the most direct solution without a bunch of drama, right? I have a box of random LED's, I'd send you a few if you were in U.S. Maybe a warm white/ faint yellow instead of that piercing white

The diffuser ideas look a lot better now. I would get some "clear" adhesive shelf paper which is actually a little cloudy, cut it to fit and stick it to underside.
