My MMr machine came up with a hardware error this morning. Says it can’t communicate with the playfield Check connections.
What is the typical cause of this failure? Thanks for any input you have.

Quoted from ryanbrooks:Loose or bad Cat5 cable from CPU to playfield boards
It runs along the left side of the huge board under the playfield and plugs into a spot near the bottom of that huge board, if you have the playfield lifted up and leaned back. Please unplug it, then push it back in, be sure it is in tight. If that doesn't fix it, then please do the same to the other end of that cable to the board in the backbox.
Thank you,

After cycling the power the game booted normally. I’ll keep an eye on that Ethernet cable and maybe clean it up with a little contact cleaner and tooth brush.

Don’t use contact cleaner on Cat5. Slip the connectors in a crimp tool and re-crimp if you do anything. Or simply replace the cable.

This. Reseat is plenty good enough.
