Looking at an MM tomorrow. Seller won't provide photos -- presumably to weed out tire kickers. Seller said it is very clean, some new plastics, protectors, no LEDs, no wear spots and that it is a beautiful machine.

I am familiar with playing MM, but not familiar with what to look for when buying. Any suggestions on specific things to watch out for and any price estimates would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Just make sure your not getting robbed. 10k cash and no pics. Hmmmmm

Lots of things:

Draw bridge, make sure it functions and isn't loose(sloppy)
Castle gate, check for cracks.
Check opto at front of drawbridge.
Check popper weldment on left side behind ramp.
Check Merlin scoop and weldment. Merlin scoop can have a ton of wear.
Check moat (green subway). Make sure it's in one piece.
Check princess diverter.
Check catapult. Make sure it functions properly. Also check target at front of catapult entry.
Check troll assemblies for cracks. Also make sure the carriage is tight and not sloppy. Check to make sure trolls register hits.

Check backbox for any burnt connectors. Especially GI.

I'm sure there's more. I'll think of them shortly.

how does not providing pics weed out tire kickers? I'd proceed with caution

I'd take another pinhead with you as well, always better to have another set of eyes, especially when you can't see pics in advance.

Thanks alex - good points that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

I don't know -- it's just my best (optimistic) guess. The only reason I'm entertaining this is because it's about 15 minutes from where I live. Otherwise there is no way I'd be driving any substantial distance to check out a pin I don't even know exists -- and I won't be showing up with money in-hand.

I think alexlevy pointed out the big ones. Definitely get under and check the green moat for cracks along the bottom and where the ball drops in when it enters through the castle wall.

Look for playfield damage where the ball makes contact when launched and along the back circle.

Check the functionality of the exploding castle.

Dragon wings are often broken albeit easily replaced.

Alex has good points.

For PF wear areas, be sure to check the orbits, merlin, in front of troll switches, flipper drag, bare wood area under side castle entrance, and all of the inserts for the kings men and shield.

Merlin hole is often routed out. Catapult plastic is often broken. Insert lights if out are often just in need of reflowing.

Check backglass light tub as I have seen 2 with some melting/cracking.

All the usual borad stuff for games of this era.

good luck. update us afterwards

green moat is almost always cracked but they make a replacement.

Be careful, not showing pics and knowing you will be coming with 10k+ in cash makes my spidey-sense tingle, like TZBen said.

Sounds like a good way to get your name in the paper.

Also look for wear by the left orbit where the ball kicks out from the moat/castle.

Yeah sounds odd seller can't provide pictures. Even it were a few pics of the game. I would be leery unless it is someone you know or another pinhead knows.

Thanks for all helpful suggestions so far - especially the ones that have me totally paranoid now!
