Hi, folks!

I've recently managed to put aside enough cash to FINALLY complete my long-standing dream of acquiring Medieval Madness. Having found a few MMs on the European market, I started to wonder - should I buy MMR instead? I've never bought any NIB game, and the idea kind of excites me, but my main consideration isn't the thrill of buying a new game, but the fact that it'll be new (no wear on the playfield, already fitted with LEDs and a ColorDMD, built with new tech, etc.). I am a bit of an old-school fanboy; I like the original games better than the remakes just due to the fact that... they're old (a kind of relic of a bygone age with its own history).
Any recommendations on this matter? Essentially, do the games differ that much in terms of serviceability, quality, design? It's a considerable expense so I want to make the most informed decision I can.

Quoted from brainmegaphone:

One thing you didn’t mention - what will each cost you? That’s a consideration.

The difference in the prices is approximately 10%, so in my eyes 'neglible' considering that it's a hefty expenditure. I would love to own an original, however owning 4 games that are 20+ years old I know the realities of such machines, that's why I'm considering an MMR.

Has anyone had any issues with the remake? The underside of the playfield looks... interesting. Do you have to remove that huge PCB in order to change coils, etc.? I know the LEDs are part of the board rather than in wired sockets.

Wow, now I'm really torn between the two

Quoted from zacaj:

Original. Boards are repairable/replacable and battle-tested. More reliable too.

Quoted from CCary:

Can't beat original again. Also if any issues they are all extremely well documented and any parts well available. No question... Original.

These two posts convinced me. I'm going hunting for the original. Thanks so much guys, good to know one can count on PinSide when making tough choices

It's my favourite pinball game, that's why I'm so undecided on the issue. I'd love to have the original just for the sake of it being the original, the way it was originally designed with all its history etc. But, having said that it's my favourite pinball game, I will undoubtedly be spending hours and hours playing it, so I'd want it to be tip-top condition, and HUO pinball games in Europe are as rare as motorbikes with an ashtray. The thing is, MM costs about the same as an NIB MMR in Europe, hence my indecisiveness.

Having read all of the above comments I'm actually more inclined to buy the remake now. Oh boy!...

Quoted from gunstarhero:

The “board set” arguement isn’t really relevant for two reasons... first of all most MMR games will go directly into home use and will never see the abuse that the old route machines did. Second, you’d hope that when they redesigned the boards for MMR they did so with the weaknesses of the originals in mind, and with the advances in technology and the use of heat and load reducing LED lighting that the new boards will just be more reliable and that repairable-ness won’t really be a factor.

My thoughts exactly. I was worried about the whole issue of replaceable parts having had to replace the MPU on my TOTAN for a Rottendog (works flawlessly after the replacement), but I would always rationalise this to myself by arguing that an NIB HUO game won't go through what my TOTAN (that stood in a bar for 7 years) went through. I can't really make an argument out of my TOTAN though since that game is a mystery to me (as mentioned, 7 years in a bar but has only a few scuffs here and there, playfield in an IMPECCABLE condition, no tarring anywhere under the playfield, barely any dust... I thought I was getting scammed when I bought it).

As of now I have 1 original and potentially 1 remake available (assuming the person who reserved the remake changes their mind). The price is pretty much the same, although I'm unable to assess the condition of the original from the photos. I emailed the bloke who's selling it for more pictures. If it's in good shape I'm tempted to go for it just cause I highly doubt that the person who reserved the remake will turn it down, but we'll see.
