Opening day for ALL major league teams today!
GO CUBS!

if all games could start like that walk off, I would be a happy camper!

Quoted from Who-Dey:

Shouldnt you be a Nationals fan? Also this thread is a pretty good indicator of just how dead MLB really is. It has generated only 12 posts in four months. .

lol

MLB is just spoken about on so many other sites.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

True but all you gotta do is look in the stands of most stadiums and its pretty obvious that nobody cares anymore.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

Thats a lie Whysnow. I can promise you that Cincinnati is DEFINITELY NOT getting an average od 20k fans per game. Theres been games that i bet you there wasnt 1,000 people sitting in the stands. No way those numbers are accurate.

really? that is only half full

Half full in a stadium that big looks like nobody is there.

bunch of bullshit if you ask me. Zero reason to do these tie breaker games when you already had 19 games in the season to determine a tie.

Puts an already overworked team due to so many rain delays/ snow delays at a huge disadvantage to have to play this BS and then the wild card.

Meanwhile Braun is shooting up deer antler hormone while he played 30% of the games this year.

#46 5 years ago
Quoted from Deaconblooze:

If you win more games there's no reason for a tiebreaker. Tastes like sour grapes to me!

Cubs did win more games. 11-8 in regular season.
Just sad to see a team set up for failure with scheduling issues and forced make up games and it all boils down to the money play from the MLB for this tie breaker crap. Season is too long already.

Quoted from lpeters82:

They get the home field and don't have to travel for a tiebreaker game.

rough 90 mile commute.
granted, chicagoans seem to travel fine and brewers fans rarely even make the commute to their local stadium it seems...

I have found this tie breaker thing to be a good litmus of baseball fans vs homers in WI. The good baseball fans all agree that this tie breaker game is BS and needs to be eliminated in favor of just using the season record (gives those games the emphasis they should have). The homers are incapable of anything but yelling "go brewers"

The good baseball fans also agree that the all star is just as stupid.

Go Cubs Go!

Hopefully they can pull one out today on yet another day of no rest.

#60 5 years ago
Quoted from ianwho:

They haven’t used the all star game to decide who has home field advantage for the last two years. Home field advantage goes to the team with the best record again.

yup, just for money.

It is still a dumb game though and needs to be done away with.

funny, I pictured you as more of a real fan?

Quoted from ralphwiggum:

Do you go to a lot of Brewers games? I do, and I can assure you that there are a ton of Brewers fan there too. Attendance is great.
People keep posting that the Brewers are a smaller market team..... What does that mean? Less money. So when the Cubs come to town, most of the Brewer fans I know sell their tickets to Cubs fans, and a lot of times that will offset the cost of the rest of the tickets for the season. If anything, that would make Brewers fans smarter than Cubs fans.....lol
Its also not a coincidence that every lake home in Wisconsin is a second home for Chicago folks. The income disparity between the two is pretty large.
So if you see a lot of disdain for the Cubs and their fans, don't take it personal.... We still want your money, we just aren't happy about it.

yeah, 75% cubs fans at everyone I went to.

Other games, the seats are empty. Check the stats, I think they are averaging 75% of seats sold for the season and that is up from previous years in a dome with no weather to contend with. I went to the cubs/brewers opening series and the place was a ghost town for brewers fans. 90% cubs and still only ~60% sold.

I dont think selling your tickets makes you smarter as a Brewers fan, esp to the big games against your biggest rival. Just shows you would rather make $50 than support "your" team. I find it sad and kind of funny when those same fans complain about being "small market" but yet dont even go to or support that market.

I see very little disdain for cubs fans from actual baseball fans compared to that of homers. I have been in WI my entire life and 3 generations now, but only lived in WI permanently for a little over a decade. Happy to have the opportunity to experience the culture of WI sports enthusiasts first hand. There are some really great fans up here that have the ability to respect the game and a good match up (this year has been one of the most entertaining to watch ever), but sadly those are often overshadowed by the few very vocal drunkard types that are honest to goodness real life trolls.

#68 5 years ago
Quoted from lpeters82:

in smaller markets.

I am still not sure what make MKE a smaller market? almost 2mil local fans?
start going to games... Take the whole family. Buy some merch, brats, and beer... Best way to get them to put some cash in the kitty for getting some more talent.

Then you also may want to convince them to not spend 20mil a year on a 34 year old that is injury prone and was caught using PEDs or closers that are racists.

#73 5 years ago
Quoted from lpeters82:

This is older, but I doubt the numbers have changed that much...
[quoted image]

LOL. Yup, other fans travel to Miller Park to watch games...

Might want to think a little about that stat. They used a MKE adjust population of 1.5mil for that graphic... Totally disregards the actual population of fan base, % home/visitors, and cities with more than 1 team and split fanbase. If you actually went to games, you would see how sad it is when brewers fans dont even go to games. One of the best modern stadiums, easy to get to, cheap to attend, no weather to deal with, and still vastly undersold. If it was not for fans of teams traveling for games, then the numbers would be even worse. Happy to see the tickets sold and fan support is growing this year. Would be cool if they could keep it up.

I have really enjoyed the entertainment this year! Hoping the cubbies can make another series happen so I can support your park with more $$$

Quoted from barakandl:

The good baseball fan would know the all star game does not decide home feel advantage... you homer you =D. Let me guess CUBS FAN since 2016 =D.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
[quoted image]

lol, reading comprehension fail'd.

I am not the one that thought allstar gave home field... That was Tim.
I just think it is a really stupid game to even play. Give the teams a mid season break with no distractions and let them regroup for the 2nd half. Allstar is meaningless (as it should be) so why even play it. More MLB money grab to distract from the game.

I have been a cubs fan since I was a kid. Grew up with it in the family, listening to games on the radio, and the rare game on tv when not working.

Quoted from Deaconblooze:

I've never heard anyone complain about the tiebreaker until it came to fruition for their own team

odd, myself and a few brewers fans I talk with regularly have been talking about it for the past week before it came to fruition (saw the writing on the wall for the past week) and all agreed it was stupid and not fair to either team. The MLB could make it slightly more fair by building in a few more rest days or shifting the playoffs back to accommodate the potential game. Hell, it is even more unbalanced for the rockies that had to travel all the way west, lose, and hop on a plane to Chicago. Give the teams a day off between a potential tie breaker and a wild card. The whole point of the wold card is supposed to be the excitement of a 1 or done where you toss everything at it. It is not supposed to be a "let's see if you have anything left in the tank after 163 games with no rest when you just used your best ammo the night before"

I also think it is smarter to make the regular season matchups matter more. With such a long season, it is better to have the hype for all those divisional games during the year rather than a really silly last game of the season tie breaker (nevermind that it messes with the stats since they count it as a regular season game)

#76 5 years ago
Quoted from Deaconblooze:

I've been to one game at Miller vs the Cubs. I don't think I would go again. The worst part was when the stadium started to remember they had a hockey team that was leading in game 7 of the Stanley Cup. My wife hated it, and I felt bad to have I spent our money (and time) to be put into a situation where a bunch of aggressive people would try and actively ruin our day. Grilling out and sitting on the deck listening to Uecker and hanging out with those same friends and family seems like a pretty good alternative to me.

sorry you had a bad time. Pretty lame that you had fans trying to actively ruin your experience.

I had a similar experience with a handful of drunk brewers fans the last time I went. I now try to avoid the bleechers and buy better seats on the visitor side to avoid those types. Had those type of fans no matter whom they root for. A little friendly jibbing is fun, but the drunkards often take it too far.

We should hit up a game next year with the guys. I find going in a mixed crowd of cubs/brewers fans can be lots of fun (and very confusing to the drunkards)

Quoted from ralphwiggum:

Market is typically defined by audience/revenue reached at the TV level and secondary- at the Radio level. Here is a quick overview of the tv market- https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/estimated-tv-revenues-for-all-30-mlb-teams/

yeah, I know TV and radio is what makes up the large chunk of dollars, but isn't the way to build this still to support "your" team by going to games, buying crap, and building the hype?

helps renegotiate those contracts when they come up again.

If the brewers are up for a new contract in 2019, seems this would have been a good year to support?

#79 5 years ago
Quoted from ralphwiggum:

I can make it super easy using simple math as a reference.
Ralphwiggum buys a 10 game pack for himself and 2 of his sons for $1200 (which is a ton of money for the Wiggum household for something so silly). He then sells 1 of these games tickets for $500. He now has $500 more dollars to support the team with overpriced food/drinks, stuffed racing sausage dolls for his kids, and parking for the other 9 games.
So the Brewers get= $1700 from Ralphwiggum, and then another $100-300 from random Cubs fan. So using this "sellout fan" process, the Brewers get $2000 for their $1200 ticket sales.
I am totally fine with this process during the REGULAR SEASON. It's a long season, they don't need to win them all (just one more than the Cubs ).

problem is that often these sell out types end up only going to 5 of those other 10 games. Since nobody wants the spare tickets the seats often go empty and no revenue on concession sales, plus the stadium looks empty and hence no hype for the regular season. This (I assume) really hurts the negotiation for a new TV and radio deals???

If instead the sellouts were actual fans that went to the games then more hot dogs and swag would get sold to boost revenue. At the same time, seats would become harder to find and prices would go up. This would further build the excitement and revenue in the long run.

I am hopeful for you guys that more fans will start to show up with this playoff run (the potential down turn for the packers in the coming years may help the brewers with ticket sales also?) and continue to come next year.

Quoted from ralphwiggum:

They have the pitching to make it deep. I think if they can be more consistent on offense, a WS for them is definitely within reach. I would love to see an Astros/Brewers series.
So what's everyone's WS prediction?
I will say Red Sox/Brewers..... Why? The Red Sox have plenty of offense and enough pitching to get by. And the Brewers are hot at the right time (Even though their starting pitching is a concern).

I agree with your prediction.

I think the most likely outcome is Dodgers V Red Sox but much prefer Brewers over Dodgers.

I also think it is the right timing for the Brewers.

That said I hope the Brewers get absolutely rooted in the WS and it possibly washes away some of the smug from the drunkards.

Quoted from lpeters82:

It's hard to admit, but I feel the same way with Bears fans in Walter Payton gear.

he is still so amazing! When I fee down, I just watch old highlight footage

#103 5 years ago
Quoted from lpeters82:

It's not that we don't want to support our team, we do, but not enough to tollerate those particular Cubs fans.

I fell the same way and TRUST me, living in WI and being a supporter of Cubs and Bears means I get plenty of BS on a regular basis.

You would be amazed how wearing a Bears Jersey (#34 means nothing to many) or my beloved and ragged cubs hat gets all sorts of insanely rude and stupid things said to me in WI. Living in WI, you have to deal with it for 9-10 games a year if you go to a cubs game (I actually find that paying a little extra for better seats helps avoid that crowd on both the brewers and cubs side... I deal with it any day I wear gear in public.

PLENTY of asshole Brewers fans and Packers fans to deal with. It goes both way and WI fans can be some of the worst down right mean people I have ever seen (I think the alcohol consumption usually fuels it, but it does not make it OK)

Quoted from mkecasey:

Let's not pretend like the Cubs (or most sports teams for that matter) haven't had undesirables in the past. You can hate Braun for PEDs but don't forget about Sosa. You can hate on hader for his racist comments, but don't forget about Russell's (alleged) physical abuse towards his ex-wife.
Point being, both teams (and many, many teams) have shitty people on them. It's the unfortunate reality. But I'm a Brewers fan, not necessarily a Braun or Hader fan. I don't own any merchandise for Braun and will never. I doubt you support the (alleged) actions of Russell, but you still love your team.
We can all cheer for the teams we love (and we all should). But I don't think it's fair to cast a black eye on Milwaukee when that team (as a whole) has incredible talent. Just like Chicago has incredible talent (both this year and in years past).

oh, I completely agree. Granted Braun is enough of a black eye that he should have been let go. Pretty obvious he is still using.

Hader said some stupid stuff but was man enough to apologize and appears to want to grow beyond that (always nice as the kid has major talent).

Every team has their black eyes, but I would like to see fewer fans stick up for them and more condemn these actions (the standing ovation Hader got after news of his racist tweets broke was disgusting to watch).

If true, Addison needs to be banned for life! disgusting behavior and career ban worthy.

#122 5 years ago

I am thinking Brewers, Dodgers, Red Sox, Astros.

#133 5 years ago
Quoted from Captain-Flint:

I am proud to say I have been a life long brewer fan. This year is very special. Can't wait to see them compete some more.

They certainly look very good. I hope there is at least a game worth watching in the NLCS. so far it has been predictably pretty anti-climactic.

#135 5 years ago
Quoted from mkecasey:

The NLDS series was unpredictably anti-climactic for me. I didn't think the Brewers were going to sweep. I expected the Rockies to win at least one of the games and I thought the games would be high scoring.

interesting. I called the Brewers sweep before it started.

So far I think the playoffs have been very predictable. they should start to get interesting now.

I think both AL and NL CS should be better matchups. I am still predicting Brewers and Boston in WS and figure that will go 4-1. Only caveat is if Brewers can finish off Dodgers quickly and continue to get these rest days. I think that is how they stand a shot in WS. Win early and get rest. The bats are hot (even if leaving lots of running in position) and so long as pitchers get days off the timing is right.

#138 5 years ago
Quoted from ralphwiggum:

Yeah, I am torn... I am in a "pickem" playoff league. I think I am going Brewers though because the Dodgers offense hasn't really been all that great, and Kershaw can't pitch everyday.
Until a month ago, the Dodgers were struggling as a .500 ballclub. They have a lot of talent though, but they luckily don't have homefield.

is homefield really an advantage in 2 - 3 - 2 ?

Win 1 away and then it shift the advantage quickly.

I am sure the stat is out there somewhere, but I have no idea how to find it.

#143 5 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

I am thinking Brewers, Dodgers, Red Sox, Astros.

well that was 4/4

I think it will be Brewers and Red Sox, but honestly think the MLB would love Dodgers and Red Sox, so that may play against the Brewers.

#175 5 years ago
Quoted from jar155:

Machado pulled a punk move. Yeah, it was a bit cheeky leaving the foot there, but there's no need to even recognize it. Just don't cause a scene.
Bellinger had huge plays on both sides of the ball last night and saved the Dodgers' chances in the series. There was no way they were going to win three straight against this team.

That was clean base running combined with a baseman leaving his foot on the plate. Just baseball as far as I am concerned.

#182 5 years ago
Quoted from Pickle:

Well..the first baseman was only on the infield side of the bag... the other half of the bag was COMPLETELY open....he was clearly thrown out. No question it was intentional. He could have easy moves slightly to his rightZ if he was trying to beat the throw he would not be dragging his foot.
Ban the guy from the league. Cheap shots are just that....cheap. The guy is a bum. Ban him from the league. Same should be done for cheap shot players from all pro sports. Suh should be banned from the NFL. Plenty more I could name.
It should be considered a PRIVILEGE to play pro sports and make a TON of money. Sports is often touted as a positive influence for young kids/adults.
Bad apples should be be given the opportunity....not that they can’t change but the big payday, fame, role model celebrity status should be offered to those that truly display what sorts is about...sportsmanship. Enough said on this.
GO STROS!!!

Sorry but if they are not banning players that abuse PEDs like Braun then someone running a straight baseline and making a point to not take the bag to a fat firstbaseman aint going to get banned.

He has had dirty plays before, but that was a straight line and the runner can drag a foot just in case. In this case, it was obvious his intent but so what. Play the dam game and do it without drugs should be priority one.

#185 5 years ago
Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

Did you seriously watch the same game I did? The play was nothing earth shattering but totally uncalled for on Machado's part. Machado is one of the best infielders in baseball today. The sad part is, he knows it. His attitude may eventually end him up on the most disliked players list someday. Nothing worse than great players with an ego.

Runner was on a straight line and did not divert. He drug his foot over the top of the bag. Bag belongs to the runner, it is that simple. Jesus should not have been over the top of the bag at all, esp since he did not need to. People are crying because it was Machado and they love the bad boy story, esp since yelich cried about it after the game. It all is just about the man drama.

Funny that this is even the story since that was a great game and the small incident was really a nothing burger. Just a game, play baseball.

Quoted from Deaconblooze:

He's just doing his best to troll Brewer fans.

Nah, brewers are playing some great ball.

I do think it is funny/sad how much the local feeds have blown up over all this but were largely silent while braun PEDs occurred or even worse made excuses on his behalf. Seems standard fair for WI though. Their sports icons can do no wrong but then something like this blows up.

-1
#195 5 years ago
Quoted from Pickle:

Fan interference sucks...we will never truly know if he would have caught the ball or not.
Reagardless the Astros have had opportunities to score but didn’t. Can’t blame this game on a call that could have gone either way.
Astros are capable of winning 3 straight but Red Sox are hitting better right now. I think it will come down to pitching....Astros have to be lights out for 3 straight games.....

It seems pretty obvious he would have caught he ball.

Great run for the Brewers! Looking forward to what should be a very entertaining WS with the two best teams this year!

Man, it's a shame the Dodgers couldn't get it done with an enormous payroll like the Red Sox have.... lol...
Congrats to the largest payroll in Baseball, membership definitely has its privileges.
Great season for the Sox... they earned it.

people keep saying "biggest payroll" stuff but stats show only a minor correlation indicating payroll is what wins games or WS.

Numerous people have run the numbers and year to year it accounts for around a poor regression (typically .05 to .1 and you want to be .70 before you can even say that it is a good indicator)
