Quoted from ultimategameroom:

Del ,Ronnie and Robbie are all amazing musicians! They have played a close friends thanksgiving party a few times over the years. Very cool to see them play in a small ranch homes family room!

Del yeah! New Realm is a very small venue, but nowhere near as intimate as seeing them play a house party. I'm envious.

It must be my year for Americana. I caught Béla Fleck (and Sierra Hull!) back in April.

My friend was invited to Ronnie’s 50th B day party a while back. Before he arrived Ronnie told him I think you’ll like the table I sat you at.
He arrived and found his seat. then he introduced himself to the gentleman sitting next to him. It was Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones!

I caught the Outlaw Music Festival again last month. This year Willie was backed up by Particle Kid, Brittney Spencer, Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, and Nathaniel Rateliff And The Night Sweats.

I saw Testament on the Souls of Black tour way back in the day.
Edit: Found it. They were opening for Megadeth on the first part of that tour.

Lived in Norfolk 85-90 and saw so many great shows at The Boathouse.

Actually saw Bruce Hornsby at some piano bar on the waterfront there before he was 'known'.

Yeah, it was such a good venue! Bands would go out of their way to play there. I saw hundreds of shows there from when it first re-opened as a concert hall in 1983 until they tore it down sometime around 2002. I saw the likes of PIL, Black Sabbath, Oingo Boingo, etc. You could see the Elizabeth River between the gaps in the wooden flooring down below. It was such a stripped down concert experience but very up close and personal.

Here's a few more stubs from that same time frame as Testament, at least ones that were easy for me to lay my hands on (I've lost so many over the years). That Nine Inch Nails show was touring behind Pretty Hate Machine - an epic performance!

Wow! - not sure I have ever run into anybody else that saw Waxing Poetics, always thought they could've been a national act. We loved them - they always drew a good crowd and were a guaranteed fun time for the VA Beach bar scene in the 80s.

Saw Concrete Blonde at some dive on Atlantic Ave that probably only stood 100 people several years before Joey came out. Saw The Smithereens at a bar across from ODU right after Especially for You came out (I *think* it was next to the original Friar Tucks but my memory from that time is bit foggy). Lol, I do remember seeing Modern English at Club Rogues and they sucked so bad we left before they played I Melt With You

#262 1 year ago

I think the place next to Friar Tucks was the Norfolk location of Crazy Charlies. I saw lots of good bands at Kings Head Inn right down the block from there, too!

#263 1 year ago

Yeah - it was Kings Head Inn I was thinking of We had a couple of different apartments over the years in Ghent. Do you ever go to the after-hours club in Ghent that was open till 4am where they only served mixers and you had to pay $50 a year to keep your own handle behind the bar?

#264 1 year ago

I saw the Nick Mason show also, great concept and some cool music. I’ve always loved nick’s tasteful drumming so that was a treat.

The mighty priest rolled through again this week, with a new set list. Another great show!

Looks like Andy sneap got himself one of those $10k 1958 V reissues…drool…

I was there as a guest a handful of times. I spent more time at the beach after-hours club that catered to bar and wait staff. Since I was neither, I depended on waitress girlfriends to get me in.

Better than Rodger Waters show that I saw...EVERY song was just too Political

And earlier in '22 saw Robbie Kreiger of the Doors...same vibe, had a younger band and played with energy and passion!

I agree! this year is the last time that I’ll go see Roger Waters. Nick Mason was a pleasant surprise in a smaller venue. Unbelievable song selection! I hope they tour again next year and mix up the songs so it’s not the same show but even if it was the same exact set list , I would go again.

Headed to Stroudsburg, PA next weekend to see Pigeons Playing Ping Pong do their annual Halloween show. This year they are doing 'The Who Fighters' obviously integrating The Who/Foo Fighters songs into their own funk jams.

Previous years they have mashed up Daft Punk/Pink Floyd, Talking Heads/Cake, RHCP/Beatles, and Grateful Dead/Led Zeppelin. May seem a little goofy but they really pull it off well, IMHO it works way better than just covering songs note for note.

We saw them in Denver last week. The Pumpkins were great and played some of their best. Would have liked them to play more Gish and older stuff. Janes Addiction served more of a public service announcement of “stay in school and don’t do drugs”. Poppy on the other hand kicked some major ass and put on the best show of them all.

Maybe scalped. Face on maiden floor tickets is like $100 + fees.

Was on floor in jersey a few weeks back.

I’m pretty excited. Just waiting for sunnRAT to get here and off to the show.
I would love to hear anything off Gish.
Snail is one of my all time favorite songs, although I would settle for rhinoceros.

Thankfully Marriott willing to give me a free room so I don't have to pay casino hotel prices.

Billy Strings is about as metal as it gets, IMO, I love watching him play. Well he said that's where he started out! It may be bluegrass now, but it still rips. He is great, I bet that would be a great show.

This week I saw the best heavy power trio that most have never heard of. The Winery Dogs are slaying it behind their just released third album. They are back after a few years break. I got to see them up close in a small venue. Mike Portnoy (drums. Dream Theater, et al.,) Billy Sheehan (bass. Mr. Big et al.), and Richie Kotzen, (guitar and vocals. Poison, et al.) All three are absolute masters of their instruments. It's like they are all playing lead all the time, but it works.
