Recently acquired a Who Dunnit I am working through getting to 100%. Lights, switches and mechs are all working correctly.

The last issue is the DMD. It tests fine and is bright. However there are missing elements to dmd graphics for certain “shades” or intensities of the pixels.

For example, when choosing a suspect their names do not appear under each character. The Who Dunnit logo is partially “hollow”. The Bally logo is missing the drop shadow ect.

I have reseated ribbon cables and replaced the ribbon cable from the driver to the DMD.

What's the ROM version in the machine?

Just went from .4x to 1.2 problem still exists. New ribbon cables.

What happens during display test?

Display test passes.

It’s some type of issue where the signal for those particular shades aren’t making it to the DMD.

If the dots are dark black when the game is off, it would need a new glass display. It would be like burn-in like what arcade monitors exhibit over time.

All of the dots work. Since DMD’s are a monochrome “shades” are rendered by the luminance of the pixels.

A specific range of that luminance isn’t being sent to the DMD

Swap the dmd controller board. If you’ve swapped the DMD, changed the ribbon cable, all that’s left is the DMD controller or CPU

Either this.
Or, Dude time to drop cash and get colordmd. This title is amazing in color!

Even with the colordmd it was missing colored areas.

Problem traced to aftermarket xpin xp-WPC-ctrl dmd driver board.

Thank you to all who tried to help resolve the issue.

That is a bummer. If you recently purchased the board, it may still be in warranty, if you contact who it was bought from.

Was in the machine two owners ago. I would prefer to put a correct original board back in.
