I was amazed at how many vendors were in the tent. Was the tent bigger this year? Spent a while browsing and eventually just ran out of time and had to stop before I even saw everything.

Bless me bagpipes, I scored Duck Tales on the NES!

    #452 8 years ago

tent was 20% bigger this year............

Cactus Canyun Continued won best mod and ironman with the color dmd won best dmd those are the only 2 I know .

    Quoted from j_m_:

the only thing that I would change (if possible) is the way the vendor tent is constructed. I spoke with Aaron Katz, and he mentioned that they may try and go with a semi-permanent structure for next year (which I would be 100% in agreement with)

Nice to chat with you at the show. We do continuosly look for new ideas and ways of doing things as they become available. Hopefully, a better tent is an option, but like anything, price, and actually size (to small) may get in the way. We shall see.

    Quoted from j_m_:

...and not 5 minutes later, all of the condensation from the heat rising inside of the tent and the cold weather outside caused a mini storm front to move across 2 of my 3 tables literally raining down on all of my expensive collectibles.

Yeah, that just plain sucked. Thank you for your patience and understanding there. We definitly have a lesson learned. Friday night got pretty cold, and the heat in the tent dropped off in the early morning hours as the propane tanks bottomed out. When i switched over to new tanks and things heated back up....rainman! I "think" we have an easy fix for that though. We tryed out some new heaters this year with essentially an endless supply of propane. They're more money, but we might switch over to all those for next year if we can, which should wipe out any condensation buildup. At least, that's the thought.

Each year we get a little better at the tent. Appreciate the patience and ideas!

Thanks to the guy who brought Gay Paree, great "theoretical" dollar game.
    Anyone have one for sale?

"If" I had played a bunch of " dollar games" on Gay Paree with craigc and a few other people this is what our scores might look like halfway through the game .

Vector won best Ss, Winner won best EM.

On the vid side, Jurassic Park Lost World won best light gun (only two light gun machines, so easy category this year!), Ice Cold Kong won best single player, Vs. Castlevania won best multi-player and Rush won best racing game. I have two of the trophies yet because the games got pulled before close for these

Still had more than 100 up and working at close though in the arcade hall!

I was thinking about that (just going down the list for whatever there was when I was passing them out and saying, oh, this got pulled? Never mind...) but we didn't have that written in. I'm not opposed, but I'm also hoping to do something else as a bonus for everyone on Sunday beyond just the shirts to keep games later. We did good, but can definitely improve...

Not sure how much $ tee shirts cost but here is what I thought about during the after party... Terry's PinGulps for everyone who enters the show, if you leave early then you hand in your PinGulp.

I actually like that idea. Not sure if it would be cost effective but that sounds awesome.

    #469 8 years ago

Unless terry is willing to lend out a ton of pingulps and take them back to sell as used, that's an expensive proposition.

    Quoted from TomGWI:

Terry sells the PinGulps for $10 at MGC... maybe he could throw MGC a deal on 200 or so of them.

    #471 8 years ago

I'm not opposed to something exactly like that, but it makes the video rewards not the same. I feel like it's some more upgraded stuff for the after party itself (actual bakery cookies instead of Oreos, for instance, although I ate enough Oreos Sat night... Not the best idea as your only meal of the day...)

Was thinking about doing a "gift bag" of stuff for the 5pmers next year too. Was also thinking keychains. Pingulps came to mind, but I don't want to encourage the general public to carry in beverages on either day.

    #472 8 years ago

I would of preferred a MGC glass instead of a shirt. I don't know if the cost was the same. Glad I bought a glass on my way out, but here is an idea incentive, if they stay to the end, $25.00 show bucks good for following year with your first machine brought. This will create the incentive for the person to return to MGC the following year with at least one machine. Yes, I understand that we already get free admission for the first game, but you want to create an incentive for the person to stay until the end and maybe guarantee that they will return with a machine the following year. Opinions? Would this be a good incentive for you?

The versus games have two player control panels. It was listed on a bunch of single and multi-player votes from what I was told. I tallied pinball had help on the video ones.

Good ideas. But it's also important that it's easy enough to manage. The more complex things get, the harder it is to manage, the more likely mistakes get made, and people get pissed.

$10 extra show cash if your game is there and ON at 4pm on Sunday? KISS

Simple and better than a shirt or some swag. It plays double duty since it means more cash for vendors at the end also.

I think we also need to do better about removing/preventing games that dont work from being at the show. I know others mentioned it, but I also saw the DM that was off for the entire show. Wasted space and we should figure out a way to deal with those.

As for vids, I would like to see a system that treats them more like the cocktails, 1/2 value. I walk the hall alot and it is pretty apparent that the majority of the customers are there for the pins. While a select few vids get played heavily there are others that are just taking up space (which is valuable).

easy enough to bring them and leave them in the vehicle. Still easy to do a parking lot deal if someone is just bring ing to try and sell?

    #486 8 years ago

This is a pinball group, so of course that's how we all feel, but arcade video history is just as important to the mission of the show as pinball is, and they are just as hard to move (I find some of mine harder to move).

I believe the DM we are talking about was up at least for a time on Saturday, because I remember seeing people playing it.

And yeah, that Vector was amazing. It was quite the year for SS, that game, the Zaccaria Spooky and the Goin Nuts were all great and the race was really, really close. I wish I got to play Vector. The way it was set upade me realize that it looks to be based on Tron... Anyone know if it was?

    Dave B at 2:51!

    #488 8 years ago

I'm not sure what other incentives should be or how to manage it yet. I don't think show cash is the answer, but maybe it is.

I made a point of checking every game on Saturday AM before the show opened. With one exception (not DM), everything worked or was working by noon. Some things didn't last long (Dan's Stargate that I brought, for example, that had a weird coil variant cook) but they were working. If we had a staging area, those would be candidates to move out and other stuff in. But we don't. By the time we found room for everything on Saturday AM (by the way, AMAZING job guys... pleasure working with all of you), if something went down there was really no reason to start getting in the way to move things around. But, all in all, I think it was a banner year for the quality of games brought and the number of them that stayed up!

As far as vids, what you're suggesting is simply not going to happen. First, we're not strictly a pinball show... we're a gaming show. Vids are part of that experience. I'm a pinhead at heart now, but I was a child of the video generation. Plus, vids are a b***h to move and haul. My observations also differ greatly from yours. The vids get very regular play. Plus, it certainly adds to the ambience of the room!

Pins get a vast majority of the square footage we have in the arcade hall and I don't see that changing. But we aren't going to start discouraging people from bringing vids.

I meant more so to encourage them to bring GOOD vids and leave the others at home.

Similarly I think all shows need to start thinking about how to incentivize more based on quality of games fro pins. I know a few guys that specifically now own a "show" game. This is typically less desirable title that is pretty beat. They get it working just enough to get it in the door and set a high enough price on it that nobody in theri right mind would pay it. I even specifically heard 2 guys at expo last year talking about how they bring the same clunker to every show just to get the perks.

More ways to incentivize more good playing and quality games (both vids and pins) is always good IMHO.

As for vids in partciular; I really dont care for them but would have definately played that killer queen game had it come back

    #490 8 years ago

Maybe some better prizes for the 'best in show' bit, to hopefully encourage people to bring in nicer games? You'd have to do some sort of a judging group for determining winners though, and leave the after party vote to a 'peoples choice' kind of deal, since very few people seem to care.

This is a great idea and something I was thinking about for the rare challenge next year.

Ask people to submit in advance and then we tag the rare games. During the after party a team of judges will go together and play all of the rare games and fill out a scoring sheet to select winners.

    Things like:
    Aesthethic quality
    Playing 100%
    Rareness
    Restoration work done

will be judged independantly and then all score combined from all judges.

Definately room to improve how we are upping the competiont to bring great games!

    #492 8 years ago

Just a thought, but offer a limited number of tickets to the Saturday After Party for sale. $50-100 a pop, use that cash to fund prizes for the people that bring games. You sell 50 tickets at $50, and you've got $2500 in cash to give out for Best in Show, or whatever. That would be a pretty nice incentive to bring a top notch game.

Like the idea of raising a prizes but for me being a first time after party participate I found the party to be pretty special and payment enough. I like the idea ofgetting a couple of vender "sponsers" for the Best in Show, etc. and have the sponser contribute a gift.

Respectfully disagree. Funds from the silent auction could be used for that instead of selling tickets to the after party.

    #495 8 years ago

I would have been able to show some better titles if I hadn't wrecked my back at work. Next year I would like to show nicer stuff but I can't promise it'll all be crate-perfect. Two titles stuck in the basement would have shown nicely. Those will come with me next year. My boss doesn't care if what I sell for him goes on the floor, as long as it sells. So that's my challenge for next year: bring enough show-quality games so I can leave the crap on the truck.

    Quoted from Slim64:

I like this idea too, now the State of WI may say no to this but one more idea would be a 50/50 raffle to help pay for after party and fund gifts.

    #497 8 years ago

Being one of the people that brings one of the larger amounts of games for the arcade hall, I think that its best to basically leave it alone. If you keep changing the rules, it just gets confusing and may not work out the best anyway. Show cash, sure, more sounds great at first. But if you are giving an incentive to stay till the end, well, then there is no vendors to spend the extra cash.

As for rewards, Its all opinionated anyway, so really doesnt matter.

Also, Hilton, your on your comments about the rare challenge. If you make judgements based on your criteria, then your just screwing up the fun about it. You are talking about aesthetics, and restoration. Well, some would rather have a tarnished but all original game, as compared to one that has been fully restored. Playability should matter, but if it is not 100% it shouldnt hurt it. Say a target isnt working now, well that can happen in moving it. So should that really hurt the chances of someone bringing a 20k game?

Lastly your rareness category. Once again, very opinionated. At one point you said that your Full Throttle should be considered rare. Honestly, I dont think that a game currently being produced has any rarity to it. You also mentione Wooly. To me, a game that was made in someones garage is not really rare at all, unique, yes. But RARE is should really be something that a manufaturer only made a very limited production of, or even a manufacturer prototype.

All these criteria will do is hurt the fun in it. I took Goin Nuts to have fun and let others enjoy it. Once the new playfield goes in it, and the rest of the restoration that is planned, honestly, it wont be going to a show anymore to be abused. Still fine with anyone wanting to play it getting to, but games at shows get more abuse by the general public not knowing its value and beating on it like it was a $20.00 game.

Want to get into the after party, then there is only 1 criteria... Bring a game to share. After party is one of the best things about bringing a game. Take away that incentive and fewer games will show up IMO.

side note that is you think the effort to bring a game is only $50 then I am not sure what to say. $200 to buy an after party ticket and we may be getting close to the value. I still would say no way to selling after party tickets.

    Quoted from Tilt:

Keep in mind the rare challenge was something I did for fun and nothing associate with the show. I spend a couple hundred bucks doing it just because I wanted to.

This year I left "rare" to the public of gaming bringgers and unfortunately voter turnout was low. I think next year the possibility of bringing in some judges to evalute games that are part of the rare challenge will get a better showing.

I would love to have you be part of it Troy. I want to make it more fun and not less. Rare is something that lacks full definition and varies form person to person so I would expect some variation from judges similar to the voting public variation we saw this year. I want to build this for next year and make it even better! If we get enough capable judges then it will all work out and keep it fair AND fun!

You mean like a JVL upright touchscreen game that wasn't set up for free play and the touchscreen needing to be calibrated isn't something you want at the show? Saw that bumping around on Sunday. Even though it wasn't my game I fixed it for the guy in a few minutes...was a simple settings feature and the bill acceptor was out of it so I could reach in and hit the service switch to fix the settings right.
