It's not quite a pinball machine but it does use a Bally -133 mpu, solenoid driver board and Squawk and talk. So I figured- let's start a club!

I know there's not many out there but it would be nice to find some fellow pinsiders with this cool game in their collections!

pinfixer and I have been working together to keep these MM's alive. Gathering information, cross referencing for new components, a possible reproduction set of targets and even a brand new motor control board!

I'll upload and link a video to YouTube soon for those that want to see actual decent gameplay footage of this rare gem.

For now- here's a few pics of the "playfield"!

    MVIMG_20181214_213239 (resized).jpgMVIMG_20181214_213239 (resized).jpgIMG_20181216_200634 (resized).jpgIMG_20181216_200634 (resized).jpgIMG_20181227_205837 (resized).jpgIMG_20181227_205837 (resized).jpgIMG_20181210_225854 (resized).jpgIMG_20181210_225854 (resized).jpg

Chiming in to join the club!

I have schematics for all boards except for the Infrasense. If you have one, please let me know. I have provided scans of the blueprint-sized schematics to IPDB but as yet they have not been uploaded. PM me if you want a copy. This is NOT the crappy version in the manual.

All ROM code has been backed up and also provided to IPDB. Previous description on pinrepair.com indicates the unique chip on the Infrasense board is not replaceable. This is no longer the case and I have several spares should someone need them. This is the 68701 chip, which simply put is a 6800 with an on-board EPROM.

The motor control board has been duplicated and extra boards will be available for sale in the coming weeks should you need one.
The unique "mirror image" 6 digit display can be converted using a standard 6-digit Bally display so that too has been overcome.

I've located 5 so far in Southern California so I know there are a few out there. If you have this game I also ask you to join in this thread and be counted.

game looks pretty cool. would love to play one sometime or even pick one up.

    Quoted from Bax1:

game looks pretty cool. would love to play one sometime or even pick one up.

The premise of the game is basically a space Invaders clone with a few exceptions:

You start with three bases which have three windows in them all lit up. As defenders get down to you're base the game gives you a verbal "danger" which is the same voicing from games like flash Gordon, centaur, etc.

The Invaders are worth more points as they get closer to the base- there is however a fine line between being safe and then brutally being over run.

The three tanks correspond to the three bases and are numbered as such. When you destroy a tank it kills all of the Invaders that are presently in the air space above the base. The tank Target does not reset right away.

The two Marauders are there just to pick off whenever you get a break in the action. However- shooting the Marauders and all of the tanks triggers a full reset of the tanks and Marauders but it also brings out a UFO. Shooting the UFO freezes all of the Invaders and gives you about 3-5 seconds worth of fully automatic firing rate.

There is no limit on ammunition nor is there a time limit. No holds barred shooting.

There is a definite progression in leveling though. The tanks and UFO can speed up/ slow down and move in very random directions once you start to level.

The targeting system is IR beam and phototransistors and is very accurate.

I have replaced a few of the phototransistors with a part I cross referenced and haven't had any issues. I can provide part numbers if anyone is in need.

    #5 5 years ago

Also forgot to add: at higher levels the Invaders can also travel diagonally to neighboring bases.

    #6 5 years ago

Wow, I really want one of these now! I love these mechanical gun games!

The craziest part of this photo is the fact MM isn't a short cab by any means. Your looking down in to a pile of shit that is over 6' high!

    #10 5 years ago

Cool. I had one of these about 8 years ago.
It was a fun game. But didn't last. Glad there is a club to appreciate this rare game.

    Hello all,
I just picked up a Bally Midnight Marauders. It is missing the front site.
The game works for the most part. The Main Space ship will not pop up. It does travel back and forth.

After about an hour the audio stops working.

I have 2 of these and both of them are missing the front site. Does anyone have a spare? Or can trace it out and I can see about having a couple made. One screw holds the sight on. I see how they would come off in an arcade. It all most looks like a pawn chess piece with a hole drilled in it.

What do you use to clean the targets? I went through the game with a air compressor, carefully and then a soft paint brush to knock a lot of the dust off.
Then cleaned all of photo cells. Hits do register, just really hard to aim.

Ordered a new blb bulb. Squawk n talk rebuild kit and will be replacing the caps. Toss up n a nvram.

Love playing the game. The first one I bought about 15 years ago at auction had acid damage on the main board. Never got back to it.

    Thanks
    RJ

Wow 2 of them! Hope you can fix ‘em up and share one to grow the club! :b post some pictures! Best of luck to you.

The reproduction motor control boards are almost sold out. If there is demand I will have a 2nd run made. Each Midnight Marauders uses (3) motor control boards each. I was very fortunate to have found additional information for almost all the boards used in the game that lists Midway part numbers (and oftentimes the generic equivalent), thus making replacement components much easier to find now. Such as the IR LED in the gun and the IR phototransistor in the rack. Once scanned this new information will be available to anyone, just PM me. I always provide Jay at IPDB with everything I find so all this will eventually be permanently housed there. Until that time PM me for anything you need. Again I can't stress this enough -- There is NOTHING electronic on this game that can not be fixed today! If you find one in the wild and are hesitant to buy it due to stories of things not being able to be repaired, this is no longer the case.

    So far ;
Thanks to help from John, I have one bad motor driver board for the Main Space ship vertical lift.
There are 4 spaceships that do not register. Lenses and gun lens has been cleaned externally. Glass and mirror cleaned.
    Cabinet is-in very good shape.
Board sets need a good .100 pin cleaning/ replacement.
    MPU is clean.
    No front sight(s)
New motor control board arrived. Will find sometime next week to swap things around and get the mother ship working.
Dropped in a new BLB bulb, wow what a difference. Targets paint were lightly cleaned for now.
All for the coil plungers will need to be tumbled or replaced. New sleeves ,springs. new synthetic chain grease.
It threw me for a bit that the gun was a IR gun. Love my cellphone camera. I am Used to EM Guns and the Optical sense Guns on a Area51;lethal enforcer big buck hunter.
And the adventure continues. Will be up north next week, and have to pull out the Other MM that is buried n dads garage since the Super Auction days. And do an assessment on it.
Thanks again John for all of your help.
    RJ

I'm missing about a dozen bulb sockets for the c-73s that light up the ships and bases. I haven't been able to find a source for them. If anyone has any spare or knows where I can find please let me know.

I now have stock of pre-programmed 68701 IC's used on the infrasense board. This is the chip that pinrepair.com said was unobtainable. This is no longer the case. $50 each plus shipping.

I have a parts machine in my garage at the moment. I can check to see if I have the sockets. the likelihood is that I probably do, but I am not sure 100%

Can someone confirm what coils can be used as replacements for the tanks and marauders? They are labelled aa12-65 but nothing comes up when I search that on various parts sites. The one for the mothership is ap-31-3000 which Marco has, but the Marauders manual shows that this coil is different from the other five.

I have this assembly out of my parts game. I can look into the coil numbers for you tonight.

I've looked through my paperwork and found nothing more than the coil numbers used as well. If you look at the Cybernaut manual which lists the more common Bally number and Midway number, nothing coil wise cross references as far as common pinball coils go (bumper, knocker, saucer, etc.)

    #24 4 years ago

Yeah the could are unmarked. Unfortunate. I was hoping for a midway clip wrapper in there.

I wonder if this could be made to work:

ebay.com link: Lamp Light Socket For 73 74 Lamp Bulbs Jukebox Lighting Twist Lock

Same thing, for price shopping: https://www.needles4jukeboxes.com/rockola_bulbs.htm (near the bottom of the page)

    -or-

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0135LRFD0

    -or-

    https://www.jkllamps.com/specialty/sockets/2929

    https://www.jkllamps.com/specialty/sockets/2934_BRO

It's a T1 3/4" wedge base lamp, which may help in your search. It's used in jukeboxes and car dashboards, so you may find something due to that.

I have one for sale that is cosmetically in good shape, boots, and plays. (Its my 2nd machine). It needs Repinned at the ice cube connectors, and recommended at the ships too. Otherwise all optos register, gun is undamaged, and boards are clean. Asking $2k on it.

    #31 4 years ago

Just to be clear here, are there any EM components on this machine or is it completely solid state? The release timing would indicate SS.

    #32 4 years ago

The electronics are off-the-shelf Bally Pinball. The combo lamp/solenoid driver board is interchangeable with Gold Ball and Grand Slam. The unique board to the machine is the infrasense. This board translates the gun shots and target hits into switch closures that the Bally MPU can understand.

The "rack" is purely mechanical. The gun uses an IR LED and the ships each have a IR transistor on them. A successful shot is then processed by the infrasense board and turned into a corresponding switch closure (electronically) that the MPU uses.

Well my midnight Marauders machine started out rough...the side art is peeling...the front is missing and other than the fact it almost worked...it was ready for a trash can....but I thought maybe I can fix it....maybe

    #35 4 years ago

It was interesting to note that while most of the edges were peeled back, torn, etc, that the inner area of the side art was for the most part in great shape...so I took a photo and opened Photoshop to see what could be done with the side art

    IMG_20200312_164833669 (resized).jpgIMG_20200312_164833669 (resized).jpgIMG_20200312_160221277 (resized).jpgIMG_20200312_160221277 (resized).jpg
    #36 4 years ago

After opening Photoshop and working with many different colors, black stood out to be the best cabinet color to contrast with the side art design the best. I repaired and painted the cabinet added black trim and fixed the saucer issue. She is once again a beautiful working game.
