Another amazing show! So much fun and already looking forward to next year!
Quoted from kcZ:What did Dan say last night about the bridal show loading out? Lots of bridal traffic from my view.
I spoke too soon... Bridal show ramp opened up as I reached the top. I'm pleased with how things went, I don't think it could be too much better considering all the cars that need to go thru there.
Quoted from heyitsjoebob:After a long drive home to reflect on the weekend, I gotta say that this show was definitely worth the trip and cost. For reference, I'm only comparing this show to Pincinnati and the Louisville Arcade Expo, two very good (and much closer!) shows that I've attended.
The crowd-funded games were a little light, and honestly many were not in great shape. Contrasting with the other shows are 80% or more community sourced, it seemed like there was less pride in the collections out in Milwaukee.
All of the NIB games from the vendors we're great. At first I was disappointed at all of the duplicates, but then when even at it's peak the lines for any game was 1 or 2 people, I realized that it's what made the show so great. I was able to put major time on anything I wanted with no problem. Being able to flip around on several examples and models of BKSR allowed me to get to know the game and determine what I liked best.
The VIG after party was really, really, really weird. I mean, really weird. I laughed so hard at just the spectacle of it all. Not at the people, but just how unbelievable things kept happening. Everyone just had such a good time.
I'll definitely be back next year!
What kind of weird things?
The load out wasn't terrible. I think I sat in line for about 30 minutes before I finally got up the ramp. I didn't break my game down until 5:00 so I was trying to load out at the same time as many other people. Let's be honest, load out will never be as easy or as quick as it was prior to the Wisconsin Center as you could break your game down, find any available exit, and take your game to your car. Having to load out through the loading dock slows things downm period. It stinks, but it's the price you pay for having the show at a large venue like the Wisconsin Center.
Quoted from bangerjay:What kind of weird things?
Yeah, are we talking normal, everyday weird, or BangerJay type weird?
I attended TPF a couple weeks ago. I really liked MGC better. Texas had more personal games and some really nicely restored ones. But many were in bad shape or not even turned on. MGC with the 110 new games was awesome, probably twice what TX had. Two new releases, also special. MGC has a great space and the layout was great this year while TX was poorly laid out.
Thanks to the staff and all of the community who make this happen.
Now if we could only have Texas weather the would be the best!
Heres my opinion. Don't care what it means to anyone here.
$45 for entry per person over the age of 9, minimum $5 parking is terrible. So $90 for 2 adults and $135 if you have 1 kid over 9. Then, the food and drink prices were horrendous. Not only that, they ran out of half the crap on Saturday. Pizza and egg rolls gone and no way im paying $9 for a crap burger with no side. $15 for all you can drink soda, yeah okay maybe if i was there for the full 3 days it wouldn't be that bad, yeah, actually it is still bad. In fact, the food options were terrible. This doesn't include hotel, gas, etc. To me, if this is a hobby they want family and youth to partake, they need to do better in all areas.
Now, onto the games. The new vendors did great with many of the same titles for more to play. Only problem were the abundance of game hogs and far too many people who pounded on and push games around aggressively, with no respect for vendor or individual pinball owners property. I personally wouldn't bring a game unless it was junk.
I saw too many kids, too young to grasp basic math, much less pinball, either just smashing a ball around for 30 seconds and then boring of it, or actually sucking on the side rail or other part of the machine. There needs to be age limits and purell for certain activities.
Compared to a couple years or so ago, there were better games brought from people, for others to play. This year, a crapload of really old boooooring slow games. Yes this appeals to some. Boooooring to most. I noticed that the selection was a bunch of games owned by vendors trying to sell a bunch of total junk, barely playable. Not the games I'd expect to lure a younger generation or giving any real idea of how these games truly play. They need to have standards for what people can bring.
As far as the vendors.
This is my assessment.
Jersey Jack really brings it. Quality on all fronts. I never saw a game down, or with the field up under repair.
I saw American pinball bending a ramp for a stuck ball, that's it.
As far as Chicago gaming and stern. They both had games that were in repair and shut down completely before the end Saturday. Scary, considering if i was a vendor I would probably be screwed buying these games. Played munsters and the balls hung up on the bumpers constantly.
One of the biggest surprises was spooky. With Alice cooper, one game the slings didn't work all day and the speakers were crackling. The other game vibrated so bad, it was loud and the glass shook vigorously. Found them to have the absolute worse quality.
As far as games i liked for different reasons, mainly reliability and fun.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Willy Wonka
Dialed in
Black knight sor premium
Iron maiden (as much as i can't stand their music, and i like rock and metal)
Oktoberfest was between the games i liked best and 2nd best, sort of undecided which. Didn't play enough
2nd best games
Munsters premium
I'll say i don't feel i played all enough to know if long term this wouldn't change.
Honestly i think the pinball should be its own event that focuses on only pinball and pinball vendors. I just don't think the crossover is there between gaming and pinball.
Quoted from leonml:Honestly i think the pinball should be its own event that focuses on only pinball and pinball vendors. I just don't think the crossover is there between gaming and pinball.
Dunno, the California Extreme show mixes them and does a great job every year.
First time ever attending MGC and I’d have to put it to you this way... its not a pinball show. It’s one thing to have a bunch of a pinballs to play, but a whole other not to have any pinball vendors. When you already own zillions of pinballs, I think the coolest thing is to find vendors who offer something you either need or didn’t know you needed. Furthermore this shows focus is certainly not pinball tournaments.
I’d away 90% of every vendor just sold something related to video games. I didn’t think I’d rather go to a show that was pinball, a few arcade and tons of pinball vendors. With all that being said the people who produce this show go all out, they had stages set up, and if you like video games then this was the place for you.
This also might be one of the best places to see all the new pinballs... everything new was at this show in force.
The show was first class for what it was, and I’d follow up to say however that they should focus on grabbing all those pinball vendors.
The only thing that wasn’t organized is load out, most of the people wanted to tie up the ramps rather than the loading docks.
Anyway great show, organizers deserve some credit, but if I was to go back it would only be because they land all the pinball vendors.
Quoted from drfrightner:Anyway great show, organizers deserve some credit, but if I was to go back it would only be because they land all the pinball vendors.
Expo has Gary and a few of his games. MGC has tons of Gary’s games. I’ll take MGC any day!
We played all the pinball we wanted for two days, filled in the cracks with a bunch of other gaming stuff, and our kids were thrilled with the goofy toys we brought home. I sat in line for about an hour to pick up my pinball table, but I saved a bunch of money on it, and how I can I be pissy about sitting my warm car for a bit while all the show organizers were dodging pinballs in a frozen loading dock?
We had a great time! Thanks to all that made it happen, and thanks to Kingpin for the game!
MGC was the biggest and best it has ever been. With OVER 100 NIB games that were courtesy of the local collector scene buying and sharing them for the weekend it was really amazing to see. While JJP, CGC, and Stern brought these games, they only came in that volume because the collectors prepaid and were taking them home. This is why you did not see 200 older and restored collector games, but rather about 150of the older ones in favor of the additional NIB stuff.
With over 250 (308 by my count with all the other rooms, but I may have missed some along the way) this was for sure the largest show in the region. Multiple pinball vendors were there so I am not sure what people are asking for on that? Toss on the board gamers, video games, cosplay, vendor hall, multiple other rooms, etc... IF you can't have fun at MGC and went home complaining then you probably can't have fun anywhere. Seriously, coming from someone like me... why the hell is anyone possibly complaining about this year. IT was phenomenal!
It's impossible to please everyone and in fact the goal should not to be. When I was an event promoter my gauge was the event itself not the feedback afterwards.
If those 10k attendance numbers are anything close to accurate this is a hugely successful event. Congratulations.
Quoted from bangerjay:What kind of weird things?
Again, I'm not making fun of the people at the party. I'm one of them.
A former 80's wrestler now preacher was handing out free drink tickets. The free drink was an electric blue cocktail, so all of these guys are standing around holding a blue cocktail. It didn't taste bad.
Then a man who we later found out was an actor in a 90's fighting game suddenly tore off his shirt and began singing karaoke. Some of the attendees found this to be a good idea so they also took off their shirts and danced along with him.
A man running a Nerf gun shooting gallery was super drunk in a funny way.
I left shortly after a different wrestling personality was doing a play by play of a Nintendo wrestling game match.
Everywhere you looked you could see something that just made you double take. Cracks me up.
Another great show!! Thank you Dan, all people who brought games as well as the vendors who brought in an extreme amount of new in box games for us fanatics to enjoy.
The show was awesome, & I thought was even better than last year. My kids tire of the pinball after an hour or so, so it's nice for them to be able to go play a board game or beat each other up with foam swords. The number of NIB games seemed about right, and I didn't have to wait in line for a game more than one or two deep. The volunteers were excellent and very helpful. It was easy to drop off a game, although I didn't have to load out because it sold right before the show closed.
From my perspective, the things that could be improved:
(1) I get trying to encourage presales by opening the halls earlier, but it sucks if you bring a game and are forced to stand in the line for an hour to spend $90 to buy additional tickets for your 11 and 13 year old kids. It's not always easy to know in advance what your kids' plans are. During that hour, there were lots of times when the ticket booths were idle. A better system would be to give game-bringers the option to buy extra daily admission wristbands. Or in general take presales as a priority but allow walk-up ticket sales as attendant availability permits so you don't end up with the ridiculous line.
(2) While I was standing in the line, a guy who brought extra games was scalping wristbands. Some guy was offering all 3 (Friday, Saturday, after party) for $130. I don't know if he found a buyer or not, but that seems like there should be a rule against that kind of thing.
I do agree to some extent that there was at least some of the usual bringing of minimally working or non-working games.
Curious if anyone grabbed the $5000 Lexy Lightspeed, seemed like it could have been a great deal.
I didn’t think pricing was high, ya just needed to be smart about it. We spent about $1000 for the weekend for four people which included tickets, 2 nights hotel, parking, all food, and drinks. Considering the amount of plays we got on new games alone, well worth it. Admission being $55 for two days is cheap, have you seen great America or Disney pricing? If you can’t play 55 worth you’re just f’n around. Parking at $5 is a bargain anywhere period. Food... $6 for a jersey mike sandwich is not high, yes the burgers elsewhere were $9, but that is controlled by the wi center with their 4.50 sodas. Loved the new soda vendor, hope they bring them back. We bought a cup and shared it between the four of us. Paid for itself right away. If u looked around there were deals everywhere, just had to look. Mgc is cheap entertainment done well. I’m not a rich guy by any means, but I know a value when I see it.
And a side note, I went to The Safe House for the first time. That place is awesome. And I did not know the password ha ha.

I read this as:
1. I bought a ticket, knowing the price, but now that I paid it, I'm upset.
2. I only like pinball so get the rest of it out of there.
lol ok, bud.
First, sorry for the long post...didn't intend for it to be a novela.
Overall, it was a fantastic show. Last year was my first year going to it, so I don't have a lot of experience with this particular show. Last year was fun, and I wanted to help the show grow, so I brought 2 games, Metallica and Fish Tales. Talked to some really nice people. Took the girlfriend with and stayed overnight. We both really enjoyed it. I think Saturday we ended up playing very few games. We saved that for the after party and went to a few talks. They were fantastic! I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in putting this on.
Saturday was pretty busy, but awesome. I had an issue on fish tales where the captive ball got stuck under one of the rails because the rail popped up, and someone texted me about it. I also had a few texts of people thanking me for bringing FT which I thought was pretty classy (and something I will probably start doing also). Saturday was far busier of the days, but thats because I assume people on Sunday stayed away with the snow. Sunday was a madhouse. I don't think it was even possible to play a game without plunging balls to finish it. I would stop by my games and make sure things were working every few hours, but I assumed I would get a text if something happened. Well I went to pack up and it was turned off. WTF. There was a ball in the kickout for the fish finder, but as soon as I turned it on, it popped out. I had no idea. After I got home last night, turned it on and found out that a switch on the right center shot had a wire break off, and the left sling link blew up. How long had they been broken? No idea. I had a ton of parts with me to fix anything that happened, I could have had those fixed in 5 minutes had I known. I felt bad.
I think there are a few things that could be done to make things go more smoothly.
First, communication with bringers. Lets face it, without people bringing games, there would be no show. Please do a better job. We got an email saying, things are busy, we are going to send out full details in a few days. It was like a month later and pretty close to the show. I had emailed you at one point thinking I didnt get the email (only to have it arrive a few days later). This also ties in with my next point.
Game pickup. I wasn't there last year, and all I heard was how this year was going to be better. Sounds like it was somewhat better, but it was still a mess. I waited a little over an hour just to get to the ramp. I *think* this was due to how I went (I have no idea what other people waited). I was parked at the Hilton, so I just left and took the direct route there. That was crossing over Wells St on 6th. I saw there was a short line of people waiting to get over to the ramp, so I slid in behind and waited. And waited. And waited. See, the people on Wells St never let anyone in, and we could only cross during a green light. There should have been communication that people should enter from Wells St. Also, you really should have had someone (probably 2 people) out directing cars at that intersection. If people are waiting on 6th, tell them to go around the block onto Wells. One of those people should be standing in the intersection basically. Also have them redirect vehicles that start cutting in and have them go around. It all added up in the chaos. I think it could have gone much faster for everyone if you just had 2 or 3 people out directing where to go. Also, had you sent prior communication with all these details, people wouldnt have had to figure them out on their own.
I do think there needed to be some kind of policing for people who brought in machines. I saw multiple that were never turned on a single minute. I saw one guy who was selling his ghostbusters and TWD at the end of the ColorDMD isle turn on his machines for someone to buy, so Im guessing they weren't even broken.
Game check-in. I brought my game in on Saturday morning, so the Friday night might have been different. When I dropped off, I was given a card with info to get me back in because he didn't have any bands or anything to give to me. Then I got back in, and saw someone else getting checked in, so I asked the gentleman if he was the one I needed to talk to for getting bands and stuff. It seems like it would be way easier to have envelopes all done up and ready to hand out. If you want show cash (did anyone actually take show cash? I mean, $20?, you are better off trying to sell your day passes), here is one envelope, if you want passes, here you go. Inside, have the card to put on the machine. The guy at the dock could hand it to you and you would be all set.
I think that when you get your ticket/band, you should also be handed a small card with common courtesy of games. While most pinheads know these, a lot of people at the show are just casual people, so they have no idea. Nothing with a lot to read, just an index card sized piece of paper with things like, if there are other people waiting to play a machine, please get back in line to play again. Dont start a game then walk away. Please dont play a 4 player game if you dont have 4 players. If there is something broken, please text the number on the game. Little things that will make everyones day better.
I dont know if I totally missed the hand sanitizer at the Marco booth on Saturday, or it wasnt there at all. But THANK YOU for that on Sunday. There really should be more of those. Like one at the end of every row of machines.
Lastly, try to actively court the pinball vendors. Maybe you need to offer cheaper/free space to them to get them to start coming. The problem is that most of these guys are doing this stuff on the side, so paying the fee for a table/stay/travel is a lot of profits. Especially when its a gamble as to how much you will sell. Talk to the guys who were there this year and see how much they sold to get an idea (I know, they get sales after also, but you at least have to make enough at the show to cover your costs). Once you start getting a good number of vendors, then you can start charging normal again (or not...maybe ticket sales can cover their costs).
If you came in without bringing a game, most of this stuff you never would have seen. Again I can't stress enough how great of a show it was.
Quoted from heyitsjoebob:A former 80's wrestler now preacher was handing out free drink tickets.
Yo wait, was The Million Dollar Man - Ted Dibiase there??? That would completely change my thoughts about traveling about to out of region shows.

Yes
454 plays on my MBrSE.
Zero issues all weekend. Zero scratches or dings.
Looking forward to next year!
I wasn't able to attend this year due to other commitments, but still congratulations on a great show. Thank you to all that help to put on this great show in Wisconsin. I know how exhausting it can be to run an event like this. Immediately after a show the number one thing coordinators, staff, and volunteers want to hear is, "thank you". Then, in a week or two, they will revisit the event and talk about what worked and what can be improved upon.
That pizza vendor lost out on a Ton of money, he couldn't heat the pizza fast enough. Hopefully they work on that for next year. Lots of people noped out of that line.
Great show this year! It gets bigger and better every time.
I brought the Cyclopes Star gazer Quicksilver ,every time I checked they had people enjoying them, even saw some multiplayer games going on.
What where the results of the people’s choice awards?
It seems to be a fun thing that MGC offers during the after party, but like most years; people seem oblivious to it even going on.
Had a great time at the show. The organizers and volunteers out did them self.
The nicer weather was awesome. Within 2 blocks of the show were plenty of nice eateries. I ate only one meal in the center. Others were George web for breakfast. Point burger bar and safe house. Point burger bar even has order online and pickup window.
The plug got accidentally pulled 4:35 ish powering off my end of the game row. All three PC based games got a hard off. I plugged it back in and before power on completed someone accidently tugged it out again. I took that as a sign to start breakdown.
The only thing I wish I knew or took advantage of was the option of loading up right on wells using the frieght elevator. Some additional help or security down there would allievate the congestion at the dock for those with only one game. As I waited in line I saw a few come and go. But underutilized option.
Keep up the good work and fine tuning the show. Best MGC that I have attended to date.
Quoted from leonml:far too many people who pounded on and push games around aggressively, with no respect for vendor or individual pinball owners property.
This is what makes me hesitant to ever bring a game to a show again. Seeing people slap and bang the hell out of your game is just rude. I know it is meant to be played, but death saves and rage tilts on other peoples' games...c'mon folks! These are peoples' property from their homes...a lot of which are meticulously cared for. Watching two guys pound on a Wonka CE made me ill...yeah it is just a prototype, but still shows the lack of respect they have.

Thanks for bringing them. I didn't get a chance to play Cyclopes but put on a few games on each Stargazer and Quicksilver. Probably 2 of the best playing games at the show.

Thanks for bringing these Dave. To bring not one, not two, but three rare games is very much appreciated. Expo always seems to have rare games, but MGC struggles in this regard a bit. There are tons of rare games in the WI collector base too.
Loved the Cyclopes, played great BTW.

I brought two freshly restored games this year and have no regrets. My wife did "politely" ask someone to remove their drink from the glass of my Silverball Mania. These games were made to be played in bars and such.

Silverball mania was really nice. And played well. Thanks for bringing it.
Forgot to mention. My little guy recognized Mike Vinikour from the Dead Flip Munster video and talked to him. Mike said to stop by the booth later and he'd give him something special. When my little guy stopped by, Mike asked what his favorite game was and came back with a translite. Which we had Butch Patrick sign.
Big Thanks to Mike Vinikour for making my little guy's day.
IMG_20190413_154104 (resized).jpgEvery year this show gets better and better and that's what makes MGC great! The MGC isn't a pinball convention, it's a nerd convention and that's what keeps me coming back. Where else can you play pinball, video game tournaments, buy rare video games, meet pinball people from the industry, play random cards games like Yu-Gi-Oh, play boards games, meet Mortal Kombat legions, and WWE hall of famers?
Also, there were a few pinball vendors, you just had to look for them. Maybe not as many as the Expo but there were some.
Shout out to those who brought games. Huge shout to those who brought Scared Stiff, Congo, TNA, & Slugfest. Those games played great and we're extremely fun.
Quoted from Fortytwo:Silverball mania was really nice. And played well. Thanks for bringing it.

I'll drag this and Jurassic Park outside to get some good pics someday.
IMG_20190406_101602 (resized).jpgI missed MGC last year because of a work trip, but so glad I made it this time at the new location. Even though I only made it for Saturday, it was so much fun! So cool to see how massive this has grown over the years from where it started.

Yes. Beautiful restoration. I was impressed with the playfield shine on Silver Ball and spent many minutes admiring the obvious effort that went into making it all so pretty.
I’m planning to bring my best next year!
I really wish everyone would bring their best to these shows. Maybe, a big prize for best in show that is funded by adding penalties to people that breakdown and remove games during show hours.

That aspect did seem to be much improved this year, at least to my eye.

Agreed. These were awesome playing and highlights for me! I was only able to bring one ultra rare game this year and sadly little pro went down hard on Saturday around dinner time. Someone maliciously cracked the golfer wheel to break it all to shit. Looks like I will be learning how to 3D print to bring him back to life. Still worth it to see so many people enjoying playing a rare game. I plan to fix him up better than ever and likely bring him back next year as lots of people said how fun he was

Yeah... That CPR playfield need a bunch of loving.

A little slapping and nudging (of a pin) never hurt a thing. Lifting a machine up and dropping it is another matter entirely. I didn't notice anything like that going on at any point. Most of the people that come to these shows are respectful of other peoples property for the most part. If you don't play with a little aggression you're not really playing.
To the guy complaining about food. You could easily walk outside to one of many restaurants within shouting distance if you don't like the prices or food choices inside. Also this show celebrates all games not just pinball. There are plenty of pinball only shows that one could visit. That's why it's called the Midwest Gaming Classic!
Great show this year! Don't have a thing to complain about.
Hey all,
First, thanks for everything! I needed a thread like this after not finishing last night until past 4am and about to depart on a full day today.
Overall I'm pretty happy with everything right now. There are definitely some things to fix - in particular, load out had a big snafu immediately that was out of our control, followed by MPD freaking out making the building suddenly pull up people to park them all over randomly, and us losing control of the order for a period. This was followed by a few vendors who went crazy and totally took forever loading. Two are already planned not to come back.
My storage area, which was super organized, is now a bigger mess than ever. *sigh*
If this happened to you, sorry. We'll do better next year.
On the flip side, a lot of stuff went really well. I'll think about those more when I finish load out.
Maybe a suggestion for loadout. When you sign up to bring a game/games you also get slotted into an pickup time. This would have people in certain increments and limit the amount of people to rush the dock. First to sign up to bring games get first preferences at load out slots. You could even line up the games accordingly at the show so one row of games would be taken out at a time. If you miss your loadout time then you wait till the final one. Vendors/box trucks could load out a separate dock until all of the personal vehicle guys with one or 2 games are out. Most of this is just growing pains. But that's a good thing.
Quoted from brenna98:I brought the Cyclopes Star gazer Quicksilver ,every time I checked they had people enjoying them, even saw some multiplayer games going on.
Thanks for bringing the Cyclopes! I'd never seen one before, and it was pretty cool! Played nice, too.
