These are not pinball machines they are more like gambling Bingo machines. Was just in Costa Rica and saw these in some local bars and even a small 'arcade' full of them.

This is no different than US states cracking down on video poker machines.

Looks to me like those are modern old school flipperless machines. didn't even know they made those anymore.

Found the pix I took on the last visit.
These are sitting out on the sidewalk for people to gamble on.

Actually our government out lawed these long ago. They are the bingo/gambling versions we had decades ago. I don't see why anyone is surprised.

looks like these were 5 pesos to play, so that's about $0.35c USD.
Not sure if they reward pesos if you win, but looks like there's some kind of return slot at the bottom.

i didn't stop to play, as folks around there really think they're stupid and basically look down on them
they did tell me that it looks like the mexico government is only cracking down on "unlicensed" places, meaning that the licensed casinos still have them.

"... The government claims its concerned that so-called “tragamonedas” — or coin-swallowing machines— are rigged to swindle minors out of their hard-earned money. But the government, too, feels cheated because the machines’ owners don’t pay taxes on their coin-haul."

The above passage had me chuckling. So the government is really only doing this to save child from becoming victims of coin-swallowing machines. This is actually pretty messed up. Something tells me that the people who stand to benefit from resolving this, will. And that they would probably be willing to say sacrifice those same children, if necessary for achieving their ends.

We have those in the US.......just head over to Chuck E Cheese. Gamble on your chance to have your child go home with a plastic mustache or mustache comb made in Mexico......At least in Mexico the kids can win some dinero!

i'm not sure it was in that article but i'm being told that mexico government intends to open several new Large Casinos in high-tourist cities, and they are pushing to get these street machines and unlicensed locations shut down to redirect traffic/revenue to these locations.
