I recommend my carbon fiber almost exclusively now. cant stretch from ball roll like metals so cant warp. Sorry but mylar is only on pinball playfields to prevent scuffing. it is too thin and soft to save anything from ball impacts.

along with the excellent suggestion to bring the pole flush to the protector I recommend always installing any taped protectors immediately after using the alcohol swab to clean around the protected area. Alcohol is the activator for 3M mP adhesives. They're also pressure sensitive adhesives so rub 'em down HARD. 3M suggests full cure after 24 hours but not many of us have that kind of patience
