Off for the Holidays and screwing around on pinball stuff.

Something my brother and I have wanted to do since he picked up a MET and now that he has a 3D printer I figured I would put him to work!

Having some fun so I thought I would share. It measures ~ 1.75" in diameter. Feels good in the hand but have not play tested it yet.

The process so far.
Modeled the cylinder in Maya>sent to printer>Sanding; priming; sanding....PITA

Off to the hobby store to get some paint.

Comments welcome!

Thanks,
Keith

Latest version ^^^ Hand sculpted

Looks good so far. I would like one for my Met.

I think you actually mean piston. Cylinder head sits on top of the block and houses the valves. This is a cylinder head.

chd1_475.jpgchd1_475.jpg

BTW, good idea that could also be used for any of the car-themed games, minus the Metallica logo.

Yes I do. Thanks - edited title. You know what I meant
I think I will actual paint the Metallica logo on so it could be used for car themes as well.

Looks good. I like the MET specific one with the logo. Maybe offer both styles. I'll be waiting to see the finished product!

#6 9 years ago

Post edited by bpull: fixed my grammer, yikes!

Painted with silver pearl and a purple pearl base coat for the logo.
Waiting for clear.

@BPULL - Hope you like your Christmas present!

Tell your brother to look into something called "Z-Wobble" or "Z-Banding" on his 3D printer. I am not sure what brand of printer he has, but it looks like it could use a bit of adjustment. If he fixes this, the sides of the print will be much smoother and be less work for you when you finish them off.

PM me if you have questions as I may be able to help.

Thanks Scott, Appreciate that. I will let him know. Pretty new so he is still in the learning phase. Figured I would give him a project to help him with that.

Very nice. The purple logo ties into the machine perfectly. I want one!

#13 9 years ago

Preview of a new design that incorporates the logo with in the piston.

Thanks Mitch. Got your PM, will let you know when I am done with the design. Working on the inset logo and added some reinforcement to the model as well. Worked on the overall dimensions also. Should have new prints tonight.

@tadowhere - Thanks for the compliment!

Came across a picture of a skull incorporated into a piston and thought, man that is sweet. So picked up the clay and started screwing around.

Still a lot to do but thought I would share.

Comments, critiques always welcome.

Thanks,
Keith

Another update before I crash.

Still working the piston part and need to address the mandible.

Having fun. Amazing how the time goes by when you work on these things.

I think it looks cool. Maybe put the Metallica "M" on top of the piston?

#19 9 years ago

Design is cool, but too big in my opinion. That's a lot to grab on to when launching the ball.

#20 9 years ago

I think it looks good, throw a quarter down in the next pic so we have a size reference.

#21 9 years ago

Here is the final sculpt before a get one molded up and painted.

Thanks guys! I will look into making a handful. Still debating between a Matte or a Gloss on the clear coat. I am leaning towards a Matte because I like the look. Will get pics on the machine hopefully by tomorrow.

$62.50 shipped USA. If interested let me know. I will get the shooter rods ordered up.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Well, I know who you can order one from..

#44 9 years ago

I placed an order for 15 blank rods and plan to do a run of 10 at this time. I think I have 7 (no obligation) on the list so far for a skull version.
$62.50 shipped USA on the skull shooter or $40 plus shipping for the smaller cylinder shooter rod.

Thanks for the interest. I will let you know when they are ready. I will also update this thread as the build process begins.

Keith

#45 9 years ago

I'm sure you'll sell 10 no problem. Definitely in on that order.

#46 9 years ago
