OMG...okay, for real..I'm going to make all of you take my Basic Electronics courses I've had to deal with over the last few months... =P
No, you can't turn on the magnet then have it sense the ball. It's relying on a magnetic property to sense the ball, so if the magnet is active, all it will see is a big fat YES, IT'S THERE if the magnet is already active. lol.
You could probably test this by grounding the coil so it will be powered, while it's in switch test if that thing has a dedicated position in the switch matrix.
