I have seen a few posts here and there on the forum of some custom painted Sparky's. Thought it would be nice to get them all in one thread. Also if you or someone you know does this as a service, post the contact info so others will know whom to contact to get it done. \m/

This is the one I painted for my personal METLE.

#3 8 years ago

Mine was done by Gio at the Pinball Refinery. He also did my hammer as well.

I really like the rivets on the helmet that most of you have. Some of those look raised; are those rivets just globs of paint, or something glued on and painted over?

Mine are glued and painted, they're little faceted craft gems.

How cool. It looks like you just added the visor and ear protectors on the helmet. Did you use some type of modeling clay or something like that ?

#27 8 years ago

These are great. I really want to get mine done too at some point. Most of these look to be home done which is even better. With that said, anyone recommend someone that does these for others? I saw Gio but I didn't think they did custom painted ones.

#28 8 years ago

Gio does do them, but I'd go with Bre, she posted above and did mine. It looks awesome. Of course you couldn't go wrong if you had Steigerpijp aka Koop do yours, since he's widely regarded as the master.

#29 8 years ago

I had a sculptor artist do mine, I believe it's polymer clay. I was originally aiming for Koop to do mine but didn't want to be without Sparky for extended amt of time. Koop was under a very heavy workload as I understood it.

Looking good Bre! I think you're finding the sweet spot for getting the details right.

Killing it as usual Geert. That's one of my favorite ones yet. Maybe only topped by the Day of the Dead one.

haha.... Loved the DETH t-shirt!

It's one of the highest compliments I think people pay to other artists when they contact me for a similar look. It's common for people to send pictures of Sparky's they love and ask me to paint them either exactly the same or with a few alterations. The "State Prison" Sparky is one of those instances. Geert Koop made a dang good look!

I have a quick question for all you Sparky modders .

I have a spare Sparky which I'm going to paint up myself . Some great ideas in this thread . My question is , does the body of the Sparky separate from the chair / legs ?

I can see that it is attached by a spring as is his head to attach to the body . Obviously taking it fully apart will make it easier to paint but wasn't sure how . I don't want to force it too much and break it .

Any tips and pics would be much appreciated .

The chair, legs, and arms are one piece. The body is on a spring, you have to pull it apart to remove it from the chair etc. It's not meant to come apart, it will take some force and a little messing with to put back together. But yes, totally possible, it's how I did mine.

It gives you a bit of a heart attack with the terrible unwinding noises but like Aurich said, his torso does come off and makes painting so much easier. If you're going to take him apart, be gentle with it so you don't end up warping the shape of the spring.

I normal unwind him a couple turns and paint the body while the spring is still connected to the chair only because the hassle of painting him while he's still connected isn't as bad as trying to get the torso back on to the chair.

Kudos to all the painters who can easily reassemble Sparky.

#44 7 years ago

Wow, everyone's Sparky looks better than mine. I have to say my favorites are the zombie and tron ones though - too funny.

#45 7 years ago

Thanks for the tips Aurich and Bre . If I can paint up my Sparky to look half as good as some of the ones you guys have done I'll be happy .

#46 7 years ago

for what it's worth-
I'm not a craftsmen, electrician, or repairman...

just want to share-
removing and reinstalling Sparky was by far the hardest pinball work that I've done and I've done quite a bit at this point due to addiction to mods.

definitely some weird twisting and hard to reach places for me- maybe I went out of order or something- anyways just thought I'd share- all custom sparkys are awesome and worth the hassle

#47 7 years ago

I painted mine and i am in no way an artist, i just hope bre doesn't get mad at me for copying her sparky, she does an amazing job , i was afraid of my sparky getting damaged or lost in the mail, that is the only reason that i did not ask Bre to do , I did not take my sparky apart when i painted it , was afraid to break it

Here is one I painted. I chose the blueish skin and convict suit look. There are small rivets on the arm and leg shackles , as well as the copper helmet painted silver. I do like the purple color tongue best. After multiple clearcoats, it really looks sharp in the game in this color combination. I did green eyes , a touch of yellow and brown in the teeth and highlighted the veins in the hands. The helmet is textured to show age and subtle shadowing on his face to bring out the facial characteristics. The small details really enhance this guy.

I came up with this crazy idea for one of the fellow pinsiders, think it turned out pretty cool!
I hand sculpted the horns, the visor of the hat and the belt buckle using polymer clay. This gives Sparky that sinister look that Angus is famous for, wearing his derby hat with horns.
