Was blessed enough to play an LE version of this game yesterday. Holy crap, dude. This game is way beyond anything I've played yet. $6500+ is a lot of money though. I am definitely considering this for a first NIB purchase as a Pro model. I'll be keeping my eyes open for a nice used one, if not, I'll start saving.... again... ._.

#1463 9 years ago

Man, I think I am going to have to get a Pro in the near future. I'm trying to hold off, but the game just keeps calling me D: ....

It would be my very first NIB or in another case I am looking at, a very nicely suped-up Pro. I'm trying to resist, but I'm weak D:

Oh it's in the works right now.... pick up tentatively this Sunday....w00t

Quoted from MustangPaul:

Have fun modding it. What's first to go on?

Oh trust me, this one has all sorts of bells and whistles already on it...!

Pictures to come late this weekend. Weirpinball is setting me up SUPER well!!!

New member present with wifey . You guys think we could install this live snake mod we found ?

This game is WeirPinball's personal machine that I helped acquire for him since he's moving to his new home soon. Beautiful game - he did a wonderful job with some solid Pro mods. Nice to finally just play a game and not have to work, work, work on one ...

Congrats! I bet we could hot-glue that live snake mode on top of the right ramp return... I'll load up the gluegun and head up this week

You know, part of the reason we have this game is YOU...this is partly your fault .

I'll have plenty of bottled cokes and baked cookies and pizza ready !

So, tonight I added Sparky's micro display mod (MDM). There is something about having the lil video screen that just makes games pop. I dunno, may I am just a sucker for eye candy toys. Pictures of install and display:

20141109_233536.jpg20141109_233536.jpg

In this next one, I purposefully did not draw a red box around the wiring. I want people to look for it. If it takes a couple seconds to find it, I know the install is pretty good.

20141109_233616.jpg20141109_233616.jpg

And here is how it looks in the game. I like it .

20141109_235252.jpg20141109_235252.jpg

Also fully LED'd the playfield. I'll take pictures later. I need a break. Still have Laseriffics crosses on the way for the top inlanes, and I need to get the speaker panel that matches the side wall art. Also, I am working on upgrading the sound system - big time....

Here's a lil trick I came up with. I placed 5/16" vacuum caps on the under body rails. It frustrates me when these things tear up the side walls of the cabinet or worse in my case, the Creeping Death artwork. Just a lil' preventative maintenance!

20141109_182026.jpg20141109_182026.jpg

20141109_182034.jpg20141109_182034.jpg

More to come soon!

#1548 9 years ago

Howdy guys. The vacuum caps can be purchased from any auto parts store like Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, Pep Boys, or maybe even Lowes/Home Depot.

I posted the Let Me Google That For You link - not to be a smartass - but to show everyone how many different avenues you have when looking to purchase some.

https://www.google.com/search?btnG=1&pws=0&q=vacuum+caps&gws_rd=ssl

Glad you guys like it! Lowering the PF always made me hold my breath...not anymore!

#1604 9 years ago

Got Laseriffic's crosses in the back inlanes. Something about them really makes that area pop now. I love them - well worth the money to me!

20141112_210751.jpg20141112_210751.jpg20141112_210806.jpg20141112_210806.jpg

#1622 9 years ago

Started upgrading the audio system tonight. Waiting on the Boss amplifiers....

#1624 9 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Thanks for posting. So you think the cab mid-sub was an improvement over stock and worth the money?

As of now, yes, it was a good improvement over the stock cabinet speaker. The new one is a mid range woofer, so the trebles are better, but they're not like crazy crystal clear....yet. That's what the amplifiers will be for; we can make the trebles more pronounced and bring down the bass a bit.

Really, the only need for bass is with the Polk external sub. It is so powerful, there is no need for bass from anything else.

For $12 plus shipping, man, you can't go wrong really. I'll say this, for $12 plus shipping, it is a sound improvement over the stock cabinet speaker.

No problem here. Had to loosen and pretty much remove the left ramp to make it fit, but once I did that, everything was good!

Quoted from bobbyt:

I removed my stock piece , no need for that to stay there and there is not enough room for it, I just removed the left hex post and the right nylon nut and removed the original piece and installed the new one from Rick, no need to take anything else apart, it took me about 10 minutes to change it out, no more air balls from sparky , it works great! thanks Rick

Maybe there was no need on YOUR machine.....

Trust me, I didn't want to take anything else apart unless I had to do it. There was zero chance this plastic was going in unless something moved - either Sparky or the left ramp. I voted for the left ramp .

I post these results not to obfuscate everyone or intentionally try to make things harder. I post them to give someone else the reassurance that "Yep...this does have to happen.......crap. Oh well, time to get started!"

Quoted from Rickwh:

Thanks for posting the install pics!
Looks like you have both the stock and the new airball plastic in there. Im surprised there was enough threads on the posts to allow that. Seems pretty tight on mine. (Just room for one piece).
Sorry you had to basically remove the left ramp. Yikes! .

Thanks, Rick! I didn't realize the other plastic should come out. Whoops . Oh well, they're both in there now, and they sure as heck aren't coming back out for a while . And yes, it was a pretty tight fit with both being installed!

Mirror blades from CoinTaker installed tonight. Used a couple of 4" ratcheting bar clamps to hold them in place from HF while I installed the blades:

http://www.harborfreight.com/4-in-ratchet-bar-clampspreader-68974.html

It is definitely a tight fit between the PF edges and the mirror blades. I highly recommend utilizing vacuum caps on the rollers underneath the PF to keep the blades from getting damaged. Please see this post to get a visual on what I am referring to:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/metallica-owners-thread/page/31#post-2031718

Mirror blades look badass. These suckers are as hefty as saw blades. Definitely built to last in terms of durability. The mirror surface will definitely keep me lifting and lowering my PF verrrrrrryyyy slowly...

Got my Mezelmod Fuel backlight in early this morning! Looking forward to installing it later today.

http://mezelmods.com/collections/metallica/products/metallica-fuel-backlight

I'll provide before and after pics. Hopefully, it'll be dark enough when I go install. Wait, what am I saying, it gets dark at almost 1630 now....of course it'll be dark enough by then!

JNewton summed it up well, but just in case - for posterity sake - the link above will take you to Rick's original post and offer. WELL..... worth it.

#1770 9 years ago

So, I installed the Fuel backing lights from Mezelmods. Now here's the problem:

20141208_221953.jpg20141208_221953.jpg

So, I never thought that the LE/Prem having one solid Fuel target and the Pro having two small ones would be a big deal until tonight. The LE/Prem has one single target with the brackets built to accommodate the Fuel lights. The Pro has two targets, and the empty space between the two target brackets is too small to allow proper installation of the Fuel lights - unless you space out the targets like I have, and as you can see, that just doesn't present well.

In terms of function, the targets work GREAT - I haven't been "robbed" once yet, but the presentation is just ... ugh.

So, I am thinking if the wiring of the LE/Premium matches the wiring of the Pro, I could just substitute a LE/Prem target into my Pro and call it a day!

If not, maybe I can modify the MezelMod hard plastic that is holding the lights to where it will fit the Pro.

Either way, something's got to change =/ ....

Would someone be willing to prop their playfield up and take me a couple GOOD pictures of this area, clearly displaying the wires including color, orientation and where those wires go on the LE/Prem target?

#1771 9 years ago

Already got an idea. I'll get some bulb sockets and install the sockets around the Fuel targets (with them in their original spots) with some flex LEDs in place, and then boom - all better!

sheesh. I scare myself sometimes.

Now, I can either return this kit to Mezelmods or sell it to someone here. Someone wants it, make an offer ($30 plus shipping). If not, I'll strip it for parts or give it to someone that has given me my fair share of help in this community.

I'll post pictures of my DIY mod when I have the parts to do it and the assembly is ready for display. (It's basically Vid's $4.18 flipper button light up mod)

I wish more multiball modes were stackable WITHOUT having to start coffin first. After you get used to it, coffin is not insanely difficult to start, but it is frustrating to HAVE to do coffin first before you can start stacking multiballs.

#2045 9 years ago
Quoted from Apollyon:

This is right.
So in short, if you start Chair, Cross, or Snake first, you can't stack any other MB with it.
If you start Coffin first, you can stack one MB with it (Chair, Cross or Snake). After one is added, there is no more progress to other MB's until the currently played ones are done.

This goes back to my earlier post. I hate that you HAVE to start Coffin first if you want to stack....it just seems so limiting .

I modded my snake for red LED eyes. I know a few others are doing these installs too, but I have several sets of eyes left. If anybody is interested, I can install it for $55 shipped back to you. I only have red currently on hand. If another color is desired let me know, and I can get them. PM me if interested. The mod turned out perfectly, and the eyes look great even while off.

snake1.jpg 34 KB

Is there a how-to for taking the top of the snake off? If so, I'd be interested in doing it and sending mine to you for this mod (read: not committed to doing it, but interested).

#2261 9 years ago

So, here's what my snake looks like right now ....

20150222_195614.jpg20150222_195614.jpg

But it's only temporary because I am having Konghusker make mine look awesome like this!!

Soon.jpgSoon.jpg

Please by all means utilize the pic of my snake above. I always wondered how the head was attached, and it drove me nuts wondering. Best of my knowledge, no one has posted the snake assembly without the aesthetic head piece in place.

#2304 9 years ago

Got my snake head back with the LEDs installed in the eyes from Konghusker today and re-installed it. Super simple setup, well worth it! He did very great work, and the turn around was super fast. Sent it to him on Monday, got it back today. Can't complain one bit!

#2541 9 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

I personally don't think activating a cool physical ball lock every once in a while is something that "slows the game down".

Tell every Johnny Mnemonic basher that.

"The glove slows things way down man........that suxxxxxxxxxxxxx.....!!"

Yet a hammer does the same thing and it's cool .

#2547 9 years ago
Quoted from 85vett:

Yeah, way off there.
JM Glove - Easily happens 5+ times more often than the hammer. It also takes about 10 seconds from catch to drop.
Hammer - 3-4 seconds between catch and new ball in PF.
Apples to oranges there.

Yeah, you're right.

The glove also doesn't blow transistors.

#2555 9 years ago

It is not about one game being better than the other. All I pointed out is both games have toys that slow down the game. Whether it be 3-4 seconds or 10 seconds, they both slow the game down. Meh.

as far as my personal preference, I just like being able to see the pf without the right flipper area being blocked.

There was no joke in the hammer comment. Multiple pinsiders documented the hammer popping fuses and melting down transistors.

#2556 9 years ago
Quoted from 85vett:

Couple people with bad boards that have all been replaced under warantee.

Just pointing this out, that is an awfully conclusive statement. Not picking a fight, but I'd love to know how you know they've all been taken care of.

#2563 9 years ago

^^^^ All those great things being said, I may honestly miss it since I am considering selling my Pro.

Was going to get the colordmd, but at $486 I may get the smartdmd instead...

Want to provide us a source/verifiable proof as to why $486 when every ColorDMD display has always been $399?

#2717 9 years ago
Quoted from anubis2night:

I have the pro led, it so the colordmd requires additional parts to mount (Resulting in the $486 price tag) i may just sell off something out of my 1:6 collection and pick it up. (My rational side of the brain tells me it's not practical at the cost, but my screw it side of the brain figures selling something equally impractical would even it out lol...)

$30 for mounting hardware??????

I did a ColorDMD on my ACDC LED Pro, and it cost maybe $2.00 in hardware.

#2719 9 years ago
Quoted from MMP:

Color DMD in the house.
My favorite mods for the pro are service rails, color dmd and snake fangs. Also putting on the pinbits plastic set today.

MET.jpg (Click image to enlarge)

I will never, EVER understand why Stern hosed their "poor" home audience with the "service posts" instead of the rails. Lastnight, I installed the cliffy for the transition from ball trough to shooter lane on ACDC. Without the service rails, there would have been no way in hell it would have happened by myself.

Look, I get it, as years go on so do costs of supplies, but not THAT much. When I see Stern titles jumping from $3500 to $5000 in 8 years, there's some strong profit going on.

Pay more, get less. Thanks Stern.

I am a sucker though. All this bitching, and you still got my money.

Howdy fellas,

So, I have incorporated pre-amplified Boss equalizers into both my ACDC and Metallica pins per help from fellow pinsider, metallik. I finally got around to creating a thread on how to do it with videos showing how to hook things up step by step. The videos show it done ON ACDC, but it is absolutely identical on Metallica.

Thread is here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/addition-of-boss-amplifiers-to-stern-machines

I did this to Metallica, and it is awesome! Figured I'd post here. If you have any questions on replicating this setup, let me know!

#2994 8 years ago
Quoted from Jeff_PHX_AZ:

One thing that pisses me off, is when people play your game, and your trying to tell them what to shoot for and objectives and they don't care just want to bang the ball around aimlessly. Ya, that's my wife last night and gets Grand Champion score. She is one of those players that just keep the ball alive and don't shoot at targets purposely. She got 2 CIU's last night, and she had no idea how she did it. Its the way she plays pinball, its how she enjoys it. She said if she had to think about hitting this target and that target, then its stressful and not fun for her. Wildly hitting the ball is fun to her. So be it then, I'am glad she loves playing pinball, and she likes Metallica's music. Just pissed she took GC on that style of play. Oh well, I'am not that mad.

I know the feeling on that one, but my wife so rarely plays pinball anymore. The reason is I would show her how to play and what shots to shoot for and why, and she would focus so dang hard on trying to hit the shots, that if she missed she would stress out so much and get frustrated quickly. If your significant other actually participates, trust me, DO NOT mess with it. If she gets interested and wants to know "how to" play, then show her. Sometimes, seeing a really impressive game and you making the shots and making things happen will be enough to spark their interest, but DON'T force it.

I miss the days my wife played. She likes to work on them with me more, and hey, I am not complaining. I just remember the days she played TFTC more than anything else, and I do miss that from time to time =/....

I can't get my fangs installed for anything. The little screw inside the jaw is so damn tight...Anyone else have this issue?

Refer to this post:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/metallica-owners-thread/page/46#post-2264067

So, there are two screws to the snake, one in the back and the big one in the top middle of the head. Get the top screw out as far as it will go; you can totally remove it from the snake. At that point, grab the front of the snake's snout and gently wiggle back and forth, and it will start to come loose. Gently pull straight back, and you'll be able to get enough room to put the fangs in place. Re-attach screw, and you're done!

Just a quick heads up, I will be putting my MetPro up for sale sometime this week soon. Lots of goodies on this one.

You can put my name in the "Find posts in this topic" search bar at the top of this page to see a good number of the things that have been done to this machine.

As usual, I'll be putting up a thorough thread with a good 30+ pictures and a video of two of gameplay.

Look for it soon.
