Scored this a while ago on 1.7 code
3 ball factory

Some really cool dots,
the horseman are awesome !

So want to make EOTL

Code still requires work
in particular graveyard 'falling asleep' during certain modes
Hope Lyman has the time to perfect one day

Sorry if this has been asked before

What is the better display for Metallica
LCD or LED ?

#13042 6 years ago
Quoted from John_I:

Going back to the ColorDMD question, I wanted to throw in my two cents. I've only had experience with the LCD in the past, so I decided to try the LED on Metallica. The LED is the same size basically as the original DMD, so the fit is amazingly clean and it is not offset back into the head at all. When I first started using it, it looked like total shit. Some of the shades in the animations were not even visible. It took me a ton of time to get the contrast, RGB and brightness correct. Once that was done it still didn't look very good because there was reflection from the playfield lights onto the display itself, the black was not very black and the colors were *too* sharp for my taste. Not to mention there was reflection on the playfield glass which I know doesn't happen with the LCD version. I read that the Comet glare guard helped these problems, so I put one it and bam! It looks a whole lot better now. The blacks are blacker and there is no reflection either way. Also the colors are toned down just a bit.
In the end, the LCD might look a little better still but the clean installation of the LED is sure nice. A week ago I was thinking about trying to trade the LED for an LCD, but now I am going to just stick with what I've got. It is not big enough difference at this point to warrant the trouble and I don't like the hi-res mode on most games.

Great write up thank you,
Would someone be kind enough to post or link to a photo from side of installed MET LCD please ?
Curious to know how far back it sits ?

Would really like to see some pics of LED on MET if possible

Perfect !
Thanks for the great photos !
The LCD looks really smooth

I'm really fussy and thought the screen being so far recessed would be annoying to my OCD

I doesn't look to bad at all, I think I could live with it and I guess would be hard to notice front on.

Anyone know of plans for a flush mount LCD ?

Would really like to see comparison photos of LED

Thanks again for helping out dnapac !
btw your Monsters looks Awesome !

It appears that Maiden may have an edge over MET. The pro looks incredible from the start.
If the team nails the Maiden Premium and LE they are shaping up to be very special.
Im so stoked to have METLE in the house and a space right beside it for IMDNLE

Anyone replaced back box speakers with 2 x 4 ohms ?

I got a pair of nice Clarions i'm thinking of installing. Just have to muck around making standoffs to accommodate tweeter

I think the TDA2030A will be okay with load decrease to from 16 to 8 ohms.

Curious on feedback from those that have done it ?

is it worth the hassle ?

Thanks,
Ando

Got to answer my own question today,

Just after I posted about backbox speaker upgrade a package arrived from Pinball Life
Awesome products ! Excellent service, Thanks PL !

In that box was Speakers and flipper buttons LED kits, Cool, no need to much around with standoffs

So before and after. Youtube, Not ideal test conditions, my lady said old one sound better, lol, oh well

So if you are considering this probably not worth it,

Before

After

Quoted from Neal_W:

I see you replaced the original 8ohm speakers with their 4ohm speakers. Not sure if they had you change the wiring to series or something but normally that is a not a good idea to increase the load, which can damage the amp. Two 4 ohm speakers in series would equal 8 ohms and be safe for the amp.
If your not satisfied with them you could ask about returning them.

Thanks Neal,

Spot on

I sourced the Clarions locally, Pinball Life shipped the LED speaker kit which conveniently makes for a standoff

Yes SAM speakers are in series so the original load from factory is 2 x 8 ohms = 16 ohm load
Now installed Clarions reduced load 2 x 4 ohms = 8 ohms

I did not notice any improvement in audio level or quality.
So I do not see any gain to change back box speakers.
Even though cheap ass, the dynamic range and power handling of the factory units are fine.

I already have an upgraded cabinet speaker installed,
Next step was to install Pinbits sub kit , ( awesome product thank you Pinbits )
I used a cable tie to add some stain relief on those dirty big ferrite cores.
Hooked up and dialled in a bangin' sub I scored from a mate !

To bring the package together I also installed a Color LCD, (Hi Res mode set) Again another great product Thank you color DMD

This motivation was only made possible due to my IMDN LE arriving soon.

They will be the perfect pair and I want MET to stand up to that bad boy that is so near !

Ps,

Is it a problem to mount LCD hard up to panel ?
Seems to be okay.
Had a few drinks so ordinary play

Hell they started sawing the teeth off pretty early. My Met LE never had em, he's a turtle now

Yeah, I found 1 tooth in the base of my LE, Looked like it was cut out, That was a depressing moment

I left it in the coin box for posterity.

I still got Turtle, Sucks

Who has best fangs and are available ?

Everywhere I look nil stock ?

Quoted from Rob_G:

I noticed today while playing my Met Premium that the flippers got weaker after 4 or 5 games. I knew it was the coils getting hot, but I don't know why this is happening. The EOS are ok in switch test mode and so are the flipper cabinet switches. They are not getting hot enough to burn your finger if you touch them, but certainly hot enough to be weaker. The left flipper could barely make the right ramp. None of my other SAM games have ever had this problem.
Rob

try some new coil sleeves

Is there a way to hear/play to the "live" versions of the Metallica songs? I found a way listen to the "live" AM songs on acdc.

I wish !

Man AC/DC Jukebox is the BEST !

Would be Awesome for Met !

Same for IMDN , praying for Epic Jukebox Live vs Studio

#16873 4 years ago

This would have to be up there for one of the most coolest things Stern Pinball has ever done !

https://www.pinballnews.com/games/metallica/index6.html

Kudos to Martin for the dedication and excellent detail.

Now if there was any way Stern Pinball could swing this extra 2 song vote deal for AC/DC and IMDN, could be one of the most amazing promotional tools for pinball for sure.

I recently replace the stock square block on my LE for the regular newton ball and assembly from pinball life. Now I regularly get airballs onto the Graveyard predominantly. Has anyone else experienced this upon swapping and if so, what was your solution?

Oh Wow, Thanks for bringing this up

I was going to do same as block looks a little hammered.

Hope someone has solution ?
