Picked one up a couple of weeks ago, it's from the 2014 run, and shows about 700 plays on the machine. Looks to be in amazing shape, but I'm not aware of the trouble spots on a Metallica. Guy that I bought it from mentioned they bought it new for his house, but who knows, sometimes new = they bought it off route. Also was a really good deal, closer to $3k than $4k. Anyway wondering if there are some spots I can check to see if it could've been on route at some point, or if it really got played that little. Anything that would give it away, would be appreciated.
On the other hand - why worry about it. If it's in good condition what does it matter? It's not like being on route magically adds holes and worms to the playfield.
Ignorance might be bliss in this case. If the thing is in good condition, live happy.
Glad yours was found! I just got these pics from Pinball Refinery, mine ships Monday! Funny I just came to post and you posted at almost the same time, that's excellent news.
Below are two of the pics I was sent. I'll be doing just a few more mods myself when it arrives. I have the snake ramp decal and 3D snake here, the skull insert for inside the coffin, the metal post for the orbit, and a topper I'll put on. Also he's sending along the Creeping Death speaker panel later, I guess the first one the guy sent him was cut wrong. But besides that, crazy stoked.
If he bought it new chances are he didnt update the code from 2014 so it could be 700 plays but if its using current code it would have more plays than 700 as code updates dont carry over that data . Stern website should have codes used in 2014 i think
One of the most obvious ways to check a routed game is any wear at all around the coin slots. If not then that area should look perfect. Also audits can be reset but you could check audits for coins thru right slot, left slot, paid credits, etc.

Thank you! That machine looks sick!!!!
I'm still at work so I haven't opened it yet.
Guys: Do I wax the playfield before playing the first game? Thanks!!!
Re: waxing, you don't necessarily have to before the first plays. Some people like to. I put 400 games into my WoZRR before waxing it and it didn't get any wear from having done so. I'll probably do the exact same thing for my Metallica.
I am in the market to buy a Met Premium- I can get one made on or before june 2016 or one recently made. Is there a benefit to getting an older batch?
thanks

Some home use games may still have coin wear. There are people that exclusively use coin mechs even in home use environments.
Weird, but out there. I also know a lot of people who have kids that enjoy putting the coins in, and it just becomes something that's done more often than not.
Question. New Premium. When I shoot the orbit shot, either left or right, the divertor (the white plastic post) continuously pops up, stopping the ball from making a full orbit. Is this normal?
Quoted from Bigbossfan:Question. New Premium. When I shoot the orbit shot, either left or right, the divertor (the white plastic post) continuously pops up, stopping the ball from making a full orbit. Is this normal?
Completely normal. Supposed to force the ball into the pops. Can have a negative effect from the left orbit and bouncing back, so a lot of people use a metal replacement post to actually stop the ball and allow it to fall into the pops as programmed.

It's still on 1.6 which looks about right according to the stern release notes. Coin slots look clean, just about all of the credits were service credits. So that sounds about right, he was surprised when I lifted the playfield. So he probably didn't know you could just put it on free play. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I don't wax any of my Stern games. Clean them with Novus 1 occaisionally and it's all good.

Thats what i do with my 2 nib sterns. Older TFLE the previous owner waxed and ive waxed it a time or two. The waxed playfield doesnt have the glossy shine like the other two...

I thought waxing it fresh out of the box would give it some extra protection.....
Quoted from KornFreak28:Found and delivered today!!!
That's a load off your mind I'll bet. Now you have a big box and a new pin to play with.
Quoted from KornFreak28:I thought waxing it fresh out of the box would give it some extra protection.....
I've been told to not wax a NIB pf, it needs more time to cure. I did that with my NIB Mustang Pro and every time I shut the game off I took the glass off to let it air. I did this for about a month, then cleaned it with Novis 1, let that air for a day then waxed it. That was 2 years ago and the pf is still perfect like it came out of the box....except for the dimples of course and I have cleaned and waxed it 2 times since then. Just my 2 cents.

And lots of mods to buy!
Was just gonna start a game (played last night with no problem). Turn it on......and all I hear is the sound of the post inside the coffin, going up and down. There's a ball in there. Fiddled around a bit trying to get it out, now have this error. "Device Malfunction Coffin Lockup".
Any suggestions folks??

Could be an opto error
Maybe something fell in and jammed it (screw, bulb, etc)
Did you clear it out?

Tried clearing it out....same thing, the plunger just keeps going up and down, with no result.

Something is tripping the switch. Have you gone into switch test mode to see what's active?
Quoted from KornFreak28:Is it me or this machine came with NO yellow handle to release the lockdown bar?
It has clips on either side that you undo. It doesn't have a traditional lock down bar.
Quoted from KornFreak28:Damn! Just unboxed it right now, issues already. One of the holes to secure the top box doesn't line up
Is it me or this machine came with NO yellow handle to release the lockdown bar?
Secure from inside the backbox
That connector on the door is just for the dollar bill mechanism(which isn't standard). And as far as the back bolts not lining up... make sure you're not pinching something between the head and body. I've had that happen before and it's usually a pinched ground.
Quoted from KornFreak28:Great! Let me try it right now...Also, this was disconnected???
Its for a bill validator.
Sheesh! Wow my machine is completely hosed!!!!!! Us: "No thats all normal and fine"......Calm down dude

Yeah not pinching anything...but Thanks!
I just got back from dinner...So....Can I turn in ON now? Do I have to download anything before playing it? Thanks guys!!!

Question number 56,543......and he still hasn't played a game yet
We were all new at some point. Just put the legs on, stand up the head and secure, put the balls in, install the tilt bob, cut the securing wire tie off of Sparky(if there is one) and turn it on and see what happens.
I got a question...is it wrong to play a few games with the tilt bob taken off?! Only after a 100 games or so?! Hahah..cause it sure was fun!
Quoted from Dee-Bow:I got a question...is it wrong to play a few games with the tilt bob taken off?! Only after a 100 games or so?! Hahah..cause it sure was fun!
If the game is GB, then no it's not wrong. I haven't installed the one on my game yet!
Rob
I was a bit hesitant to play it without cliffy's intalled. Still waiting for them to arrive. But I guess I can't contain myself anymore! F-it...I'm playing!!!!

I'm not going to install it either...

Why must I install the tilt bob? I really don't want any tilt warnings...
Quoted from KornFreak28:Why must I install the tilt bob? I really don't want any tilt warnings...
It's your game set it up however you like. But when you go play somewhere else you may tilt easily out of habit of hard nudging with no warnings
Tilt is part of the game of pinball. Leave it off if you want, but you're missing out on a significant part of the game.
