Just picked up a nice Chicago Coin Blue Max at the Ohio Show. Brought it home and found the left flipper to be chattery, so I went to pull the flipper mechanism apart and see what needed replaced.

This is my first EM, so excuse my ignorance, but did coil sleeves used to be metal? The coil on the flipper in question looks to be original, and it looked pretty toasty. The other flipper had a newer coil and the regular coil sleeve I'm used to seeing.

oh yeah Vanapult you still find games with metal sleeves
my Wms. Space Mission was loaded with them - kind of a cool discovery

Yes, many have metal coil sleeves - some can be replaced and some never seem to come out.

Yes, I've seen aluminum, brass, copper.

And they wear funny. Usually to one side and destroy the coil.

Never had a nylon one do that.

Cool, thanks! I love rebuilding flippers. Finding parts for this one is kind of an adventure, relatively. Been on Pinball Resource, which seems to be the best bet.

Wow. This thread is a question answering coincidence for me.
Just rebuilt the flippers on my 1973 Williams Gulfstream last night.
Found metal coil sleeves on both flippers. I was just wondering if that was normal or not.
The right side old metal sleeve was difficult to extract, but the new nylon one went in smoothly.

i've never successfully gotten one out... of course, i've only had one machine that had them in it... maybe i'll have more luck in the future...

i HAVE gotten to the point where i was so frustrated with one that i used a sledgehammer and flattened the coil entirely... that felt good...

My bally star trek mirror has one on the drop target coil
Decided to keep it as the coil looks larger inner diameter

replace all metal sleeves with plastic it will improve game play.

I have had a slew of metal ones as of late, but now i have some EM's too...

all came out no problem, and were replaced with the nylons....

Not going to happen with all of them, some were not meant to come out.

I've never gotten a metal one to come out without destroying the coil.

Hell, I've had some plastic sleeves that were stuck in that badly, too.

ive used a nut driver to get the sleeves out when they dont want to budge. I have a box of the old metal sleeves lying around as i cant bring myself to throw them away

like this? it was a battle to get the plunger out of this one, let alone what was left of the sleeve...

Never had one come out no problem but changing them out does improve how a game plays

I second this.
My Space Mission was also full of 'um. Some wouldn't budge. I had to desolder the coil and put the end of the coil onto a deep socket larger than the metal sleeve, then drive the end sticking out into the hollow of the socket below with a tack hammer.
I found a 1/8" drive small socket which would fit the coil hole and drove the sleeve the rest of the way out..
