F no. You are nuts. GAME SHOULD HAVE HAD THIS TYPE OF CODE MONTHS AGO. WE LOST 3 months on hammer issues alone that should not happen.
Code is great, but not all is forgiven and I hope Stern spends more time testing before release. Still ticked STLE has a lot on it lights wise that just doesn't work.
On release anything on the play field should be in the game

Also the cannon "modes" as you call them isn't a big deal. We don't know if they should be modes or were meant to be modes. You make the cannon shots & the insert goes solid. In the case of Metallica, we know they're supposed to be modes because the picks light the inserts, you hear them say "My mode just started!" but nothing actually happens.
Designers put that stuff on the pf. Programmers then code it. I hear Lyman got to pick inserts on Borgs next game so every one should be used
