When did pinball go from a 'build a bonus and then multiply it' type of scoring to 'shot based real time' scoring? Was there a pivot point in pinball history or was it a gradual thing over many years and manufacturers?

The best pinball memories I had - hitting that multiplier shot ... 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x! Each one had it's own colour and when it lit up.... wow, that was really satisfying to see them all in one ball. Then when the bonus countdown started.... standing back so you could take it all in... the chimes, the cascading lights, the climbing score that seemed to never stop. And to top it all, the knocker going off for replay as the countdown nears the end. You look around the room. Yeah, that was me.

Wish the bonus countdown would made a comeback.

That's what I like about my Solar Ride. You can get it up to 20 on the bonus value and 5X on the multiplier....100 K in the bank. Best part on Solar Ride is you can pay off the bonus on the playfield, without draining the ball...keep the multiplier and start building bonus values again. It takes awhile to pay off, gives you a little rest and is very rewarding. You're right, modern games just don't have that anymore, as far as I know. John

Love the bonus countdown on Black Knight, increasing in pitch the better you do. And I think if you did REALLY well it would roll back around to the low-pitched sound. I may be mis-remembering that though.

It went the way of spinners and pop bumpers that were worth something. Jet level 1- 100,000 woo hoo!

I think Bally Playboy did a good job with it playing a tune but boy, it took a long time when you had your bonus maxed out.

On DMD games, it was always nice when it showed you the what you earned, multiplied it via an animation, and then counted it into your score. Some games did it better than others. But as other end of ball awards appeared (loop bonus etc.), it had to be lumped together as a single score value to shorten play time. Plus, they added the hit both flippers function to zip right through the whole collect routine.

Just played a couple of games on Barracora ...bonus heaven!! 5x bonus and 5x Super bonus = 25X bonus and you can collect it during the ball in the top eject hole. Swift bonus countdown at end of ball too

1974 Williams Triple Action has that old style clanking sounds and bonus countdown. Love it.

Got to play one at Tx Pinball Festival earlier this year. Had not played a Triple Action since mid/late 70's .
