Just picked up a Bally Medusa, which is playing pretty well but I've got a few issues I'm working through. The first one is simple. My game has two posts either side of the spinner on the right side. It's odd as they aren't on the left side, though there is a screw hole on the upper left side. Just wondering what other Medusa owners have here. The top post is a problem as the ball sometimes gets stuck between it and the flipper.
Also, are those zipper flippers supposed to have rubbers on them?

That post protects the spinner switch actuator from getting hit by the ball, though I don't recall there being one installed above the spinner as well. Have you compared your game to photos on IPDB?

Yes, the zipper flippers are supposed to have 1" rubber rings on them.

If you need the translucent targets that go atop the playfiled check out: http://www.langelius.com/

Thanks, that makes sense to protect the spinner actuator from above and below.
And thanks for the target link. My greens are translucent but not my red.

Now an issue that is really bugging me.
What is happening is that I knock down the first Olympus target. 2 pop up. I knock them down. 3 pop up. I knock them down and 4 pop up. Now when I knock them down, they don't pop up, they stay down. If I collect Neputunes Cove, they still stay down. Any idea why they wouldn't be resetting? Really mucks up the game.

Another issue is that I have got a stuck switch problem at the top flippers (switch 41) which I haven't been able to fix yet. When I hold in the left flipper it activates and stays up but when I hit the right flipper the upper left flipper falls down and the voltages on all the lugs of the upper left flipper coil read 0.

I'm no sure if both are related - it would seem unlikely.
Any help from Medusa owners much appreciated.

Regarding the drop targets I would make sure all the drop target switches and the switch for the saucer are clean are working properly, making good contact and no wires off.

#7 8 years ago

If I was a betting man, I would bet that your drop target #4 has a switch issue. There would be no other reason for them not to reset.

Just saw Kevlar's post. We are both on the same thinking path...

#8 8 years ago

Crikey, do I have to remove the whole drop target assembly to test?

#9 8 years ago

They are going to be awkward to get to, if you can get someone to help you may be able to lift the playfield up and partially out of the cab to reach them.

#10 8 years ago

Well I just identified the 7th drop target as the problem - it doesn't register a score when it's hit, so must be a switch issue. I'll look under there with a camera, see if I can find anything obvious.

#11 8 years ago

Got it! Was able to act the contortionist and see the 7th leaf switch not making contact. Have adjusted it and now can get to Olympus!
Thanks guys.

Thanks for the link to the translucent targets! Mine are all non-translucent replacements. I have a Medusa problem as well. My lamps under the flippers went out (I think at the same time as 4 lamps in the upper left PF GI behind the saucer which I also can't solve) and I've been trying to correct the problem with no luck. I watched a video on youtube and it looks like the flipper lamps are GI, but switch off when the flipper buttons are pressed. I have scoured the schematics and I cannot find any mention of the flipper lamps on the lamp driver or aux driver board pages. Does anyone have any info on the switching flipper lamps and where they connect further upstream?

My 4 GI lamp issue may be a bad ground, but I can't get back under it to even check. Flipper lamps have been out for months and I've been scratching my head over it for the last week trying to get it working again.

Thanks!

Ryan

The lamps under the main flippers are switched via eos type switches on the upper flipper mechs. Strange I know but thats how they are fed. I had the lamps stop working on one of mine and it was a wire off on the switch I just mentioned. When working properly you can test by manually moving the upper flippers with your hand. Could have a wire off or switch blades may need adjusting.

#14 8 years ago

Thank you, that was exactly the problem! A wire was off on that switch and now BOTH the flipper lamps and upper left pf GI are working again. At last!!! Man, that feels good to finally have that fixed!!

I don't even own a Medusa yet (some day!) and I bought those transparent targets just in case. They look great, buy with confidence.

There is one in Phoenix for sale on Craigslist (not mine) but is within driving distance. It's titled "Pinball for Sale". I'd like this title as well but don't have the funds at the moment.

Thanks for the tip, but I have zero time for pinball road trips right now.

I did look for it, no pics, just "Medusa- one of the nicest you may ever see all leds plays great, looks great 2000.00"

This is because you don't see them that often at all!

Look man, you of all people don't get to rub it in!

Ask your man if he wants to swap for my really nice Fireball II.

Ok Medusa folks, I am having some sudden problems with my Medusa. I had recently fixed the switched flipper lights/GI from a broken wire, but that popped loose again due to a less than stellar soldering job, which I have since fixed properly and is working fine. While I was under there, I discovered that the shield of the gods plunger assembly bracket was loose and the upper right slingshot was so loose, it was being held on with threads of one of the three screws!! I tracked down one of the two missing screws inside the cabinet and could not find the other (even using a mirror and magnet looking under the power board and under the wood slats), so I used a spare screw I had and tightened everything back up and all was well.

I noticed a couple of feature lamps out and I powered down and wiggled the connector on the lamp driver board and that brought them back to life. Everything seemed normal at this point, so I put the game back in place and went on to fix another game.

Then last night, a friend and I went down to play a couple of games, the game booted and we had 2 players set and he launches ball 1 and starts in the upper playfield and as soon as the zipper flippers closed in, the flippers stopped working (trapping the ball right at the zipper flippers) and the pf display started showing random garbled numbers. I quickly powered down and waited a second and tried again, but this time, the GI was on, and I heard one chirp from the game, but then nothing happened. It would not finish the boot sequence. I decided to leave it alone for the night and mess with it when I got home from work.

Tonight, I fired up the game and it booted fine! But then all of a sudden the flippers stopped again mid game. I powered down and checked all fuses and they tested fine out of the game. I powered on and then the MPU would not boot and the MPU LED was on solid. I powered down, waited a min and tried again and it booted fine! Now it always boots, BUT the front left pop bumper won't fire and the out hole switch is not activating when a ball drains. Once in awhile, it will discover the ball and advance to the next ball in play, but at this point, it's not working normally and I'm not sure where to look next.

What would cause a pop bumper to just stop working (I checked the switch gap and with the game on and pf propped up, I could not get the pop to fire when fiddling with the switch. Same with the out hole switch. I cleaned it with 91% alcohol on a business card and it won't activate like it should.

I'm stumped!

Thank you for any guidance!!

Whenever I get similar strange behaviour from my Medusa or Centaur 9 times out of 10 re-seating the connectors in the backbox fixes them. One day I will re-pin the boards and fit new connectors to the wiring. Just grab hold of the multi-pin connectors on the mpu, pull them off a little and push them back on. Hopefully that will get you going.

Does the solenoid for the pop bumper and out hole switch work in test mode?

#23 8 years ago

Well, the pop bumper and out hole kicker work in test mode, but then not in game play. So, I reseated all of the MPU connectors and it seems to have solved the problem! Good to go for now.

Thank you!!

Great news, re-seating connectors is the equivalent of " have you tried turning it off and back on again " in the IT world :>

Time to get rid of the IDCs. I am re-pinning my Medusa right now. Every
one, except for the displays.
