Quoted from rottenrobert1313:

I couldn't resist any longer. After I checked and replaced a few of the Fuses I powered up my medusa. She works but the lower right pop would fire intermittently. I checked to see if the switch was closing with vibration, but that wasn't it. Now it doesn't work at all. Any ideas?? The plunger of the coil moves freely in the sleeve so I think it's fine.
Again I'm new to this hobby so I'm hoping it's an easy fix.

You'll see a small capacitor on that pop bumper's switch. It might be shorted. Clip one side and see if it stops firing randomly. If so do yourself a favor and pick up a batch of replacements. You can get them at Radio a Shack in a pinch. I think they are 1/2 microfarad.

#102 10 years ago

They should be .047 50v suggest upgrading to monolithics. it can be cut off and still work decent I suggest a bulk lot on Ebay 50-100x pretty cheap radio shack will cost $$

#103 10 years ago

Thanks guys. I posted in vid 1900's pop rebuild guide and he answered with the same response. I picked up a few from the shack and your right $$$$. I got a few more coming in the mail. The pops are firing when I hit the row of targets that are on the left. And the left sling will kick when I hit those targets too. Not sure why but figured if one cap is bad others might be too, so I'm going to replace them all.

Thanks again

Yep, that's your best bet. One test pretty much spells out the inevitable: replace em all.

I have read some post about how the speech for Medusa can be updated. Anyone have more information on this (i.e. what is involved, the end result, cost and where to buy?

#106 10 years ago

Anyone know where I can buy parts to rebuild the zipper flippers including the mechanism?

I did a Google search and found very little.

I thought Steve had them at Pinball Resource. You're looking for a rebuild kit I assume??

#108 10 years ago

The zipper flipper parts are available at marcos you need to look up em flipper parts they have the bushing pawls plungers etc.

Yes I need a rebuild kit. The left flipper drops when the flippers are pulled in after hitting a drop target.

When I did a search for parts under the "Medusa" game I assumed it would show a rebuild kit for the upper flippers too but I guess not. I'll look into the EM parts.

Thanks guys.

I did the same but then I went under Playfields - Flippers and found http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/BFKIT88. It states it's for Medusa but appears to be for the main flippers only. I sent an email to Marco to see if they have a kit for the zipper and will post when they respond!

#111 10 years ago

Ok guys well marcos game parts lists are crap they dont have half the parts for each game listed you need to look up under playfield machinery or parts for other items needed here is the rebuild kit you guys need for the zipper flippers

Thanks hellfire, I'll be ordering that rebuild. Now what about the mechanism? A kit for it or is it just a matter of replacing some washers?

#113 10 years ago

i havnt seen any rebuild for the zipper assembly itself it seems them parts would have to be obtained seperately at a hardware store etc I was considering nylon for when i get around to restoring my machine.

Ok. I wasn't sure what's involved with the mechanism. As I haven't taken it apart yet. I just wondered if there was a "kit" to rebuild it.

I emailed Marco and asked about a Zipper Flipper Kit and received the following response "Sorry, but we do not have a zipper flipper rebuild kit"

Well thanks for trying. I guess the link that hellfire gave will have to do for the flippers. And I'll have to see what's involved in the main mechanism when I pull it apart.

#117 10 years ago

The kit in the marco link is the right kit for the flippers assemblies same bushings, plungers, pawls, coils use same standard nylon coils sleeves as the standard coils. the Zipper mech honesly is fine with a good cleanup and regrease

like i said there realy isnt a zipper mech rebuild kit but i would prolly go with nylon washers etc instead of the metal washers that or bronze washers should smooth out the assembly nicely. the zipper mech is kinda rare and well its one of them things that would take a bit of leg work to rebuild or upgrade but the flipper parts are the most imprtant at least they are available as a kit.

The EM flipper pawl and plungers one is also required for rebuilding the ball save device on Silverball Mania as well.

how much do these medusa go for in half decent shape? Also does anyone know where I can get some kind of stencil kit for the playfield? I know you can get one for the outside its worn a good bit up top. Also last night playing my top right zipper flipper stuck open and reset the machine and stayed up with power off so mech issue lift the PF up and could not get the plunger back down in the coil, so I guess the coil is shot and swollen, dead short as it resets every time I hit the right flipper button. so I removed it form the circuit and pin works normally now without one zipper flipper. waiting on a new coil and sleeve etc.

#119 10 years ago

also where do you guys get those see threw targets very cool

#120 10 years ago

Stencil kit for playfield?? You mean stencil kit for the cabinet? If the playfield is worn CPR is taking request for a new playfield to be reproduced late this year! Where are you located, I may be interested in buying your game if you're looking to sale!?!?!
Lastly, the targets aren't available anywhere! Trying to get Planetary Pinball to reproduce them but no luck so far!

The coil is prolly fine the plunger is prolly mushroomed and binding.
Some insert decal sets are made for the classic ballys but unfortunately not Embryon, Vector, Medusa, Spectrum, Elektra etc. there are no such thing as stencils for a playfield if you want to airbrush you have to lay frisket and cut everything out you want to airbrush.

So, I invited a friend over the other day. We played a little pinball. He's not a pinball guy, but he's a talented mechanical guy & used to do movie/TV puppeteering, hobby RC, etc. So, he's got good innate hand-eye coordination but little pinball experience.

I explained the skill shot on Medusa: "You wait for the lights to light up & try to roll over as many of them as possible on your plunge to light up the spinner value. I can get 3 usually, & often 4, but I've never seen 5."

What happens on his 2nd try? All 5. The nerve. I scrambled to take a picture before he drained the ball--I managed to snap a shot only just an instant before his short ball was over.

What a booger.

That's cool. I got it once but on my game the first light always goes off. In the shooter lane and on the play field. Anyone know why that might be? Any combination of lights I get that first one always shuts off.

#124 10 years ago

I think ive only been able to get all 5 like once or twice sofar

That often happens to me too! I get 4 on the plunge but then, a second or two later, the 1st one goes out. I suspect it has something to do with hitting a switch on the PF.

If you don't hit anything in the PF soon enough, the subroutine for sequencing the shooter lane lights continues b/c it's still in "skill shot mode" & toggles the 1st light off & rob you of that 1st rollover.

Make sense? I have no empirical test data to back up my claim...just a theory...

#126 10 years ago

Its all timing you have have just the right speed and shoot at just the right time to get all 5 its very hard skill shot.

Yeah, I guess that could be it. I still need to replace all the caps on the switches so maybe some things aren't being seen by the CPU.

plunger was sticking coil swollen replaced coil and sleeve working fine now thanks, also I sent the email in to request new playing field for $600 seems like it will be a lot of working swapping this out?

#129 10 years ago

no my other top zipper flipper don't work it got weak on my last game than it just died I replaced coil and sleeve etc 43 volts there so what is the problem? transistor? eos switch? switch form bottom flipper?

#130 10 years ago

Prolly one of the EOS switches either the one on the zipper flipper or or the outter EOS switch on the lower flipper on the same side that powers up the upper flipper after the lower EOS switch is disconnected .
So you need to check 2 of the EOS switches.

Is there any orange glow on the display glass at all on P3 display?

#136 10 years ago
Quoted from blanner22:

coils stops for the flippers and zipper flippers

For the Flippers I believe you're looking for the Core Plugs - A 613-127
For the Zipper Flippers they're referred to the Coil Brackets - P-108-53

To be certain you can go to http://www.planetarypinball.com/reference/partsmanuals/BLY_Parts_1981/index.html#/1/ and look at the Parts Manual to confirm.

#137 10 years ago

no orange the guy I got it off had it unplug and I never looked at it much as I wanted to get the playfield parts going first slingshots bumpers etc

#138 10 years ago

well it either the glass or 4543 decoder ic

#139 10 years ago

Have you taken the display from Player 1 or 2 and put it into 3? This way you can see if it's the display itself?

#140 10 years ago

no never really looked at it, that's a good idea tho thanks guys keep you updated this week

#141 10 years ago
Quoted from blanner22:

Yeah do that first that way you know whether it's the display or in the board. More than likely it's the display but you never know. Also, when you take the player 1 display and put it into player 3 take the player 3 display and put it into the player 1, basically swap the two! This will allow you to confirm whether or not Player 3 display works!

#142 10 years ago

never looked at the display yet because......
I replaced the coil on top right flipper because when I push the flipper button the pin would reset so found the coil short and removed the wires worked normally except that right flipper so the new coil lasted 5 games (3 days) and now the pin is doing the same thing again resetting once I hit the right flipped coil burnt again? if so why? anyone know about this or have had this problem? I can play with the left flipper all day.......... too much volage on coil and diodes?
Where I should have 190Volts I have 230 and I can not adjust it so I m assuming the pot is burnt, So I just placed an order for new bridge rects, C23 and C26 new pot memory cap instead of that NI battery another coil diodes and some transistors as one leg is like 3.7 and all others were 5.3 on the driver board and 2 EOS switches, if this doesn't work its going to the landfill just joking I will keep testing

#143 10 years ago

LOL
Have you checked the J3 top right connector on the Sol. control board for a burnt pin? or the connectors on the rectifer board?

#144 10 years ago

will do tonight just reading about that.....I ordered replacement connectors as well $250 in parts on the way lol plus $200 for the machine still doing ok I think for a medusa however PF is worn up top a good bit but the fun factor is still there

230 volts concerns me a bit must be the pot or voltage regulator I was going to buy a new MPU and S driver board but I ordered parts instead

I'm in newfoundland Canada where pins are extremely rare and its even more rare to find one that powers up under $1000

hellfire you the F#$%ing man brother thanks for the help and you too meSz

#145 10 years ago
Quoted from blanner22:

$450 for a working Medusa is excellent IMO! I see these go for 1k in poor condition. With CPR doing the playfield and already completed the plastic set and backglass I can see these going for more now as people can restore them!

Still working on the transparent targets though. Wish I knew someone that made molds as I would love to look into having a mold made. I know they're not cheap to do and it would take a long time to recoup the money but with Elektra, Vector and Medusa machines using them and with these machines having repo parts made I would think there would be a demand to have the transparent targets?!?!

Quoted from blanner22:

Glad to be able to help!

#146 10 years ago

yes I see them on some very cool, I put my request in for a new PF and my back glass is good no nipples though lol cabinet is in good shape for 32 years old few scrapes except the adjusters on the legs are jammed
I drop a note here tomorrow or the next day after I check the J3 top right connector on the Sol. control board for a burnt pin? or the connectors on the rectifer board and the EOS switches to get the left zipper working.....

#147 10 years ago

ok look at the pin very quickly and found a broken off wire on the top left flipper resolder it back on and the flipper is weak but works full stoke sometimes prob 1 out of 10 flips did this happen to anyone before? ......never looked at the display yet or the right flipping (pin still resets when I push the right flipper button)

Marco is sold out of the dual flipper EOS switches and flipper coils............

Is there some gap settings or something I can try and fix the EOS switch???

#148 10 years ago

take a fine file and file new flat clean surfaces on the switch pads if you have enough pad left to do it.
Marco does have the switches you would need the single with spacer then by the secondary n.o. one for the secondary most commonly they are two seperate switches instead of a single stack anyway.

Quoted from bigduke6:

This thread makes me very, very sad.

That sucks. Medusa is such an interesting "beast" it will remain in my collection forever. I love mine. I ended up putting red translucent up top and on the lower right I added in blue bulbs and blue translucents. Makes it look bad A$$.

How I acquired mine. 3 years ago at the Texas Pinball Festival Swap Meet. I wake up in a major fog around 8:30am. Parking lot is jammed with people buying games. Walk into the parking lot and there sits a Medusa on the north side of the parking lot. I look at it. It is mint and hand the guy 4 bills and he says fine. Load it up in a buddy's SUV and walk around and shoot the Sh@@. I could not believe nobody bought the game. It was crazy.
