Look forward to more interesting and creative work on this game

Quoted from embryon:

thats a good description of what it is embryon. aside from legs, the reason i paint metal stuff is to hide things that cannot be buffed and will still show imperfections. paint hides a lot of that stuff to the casual player. those rails that go across the back above the pf glass is a good example as are small dents in the coin door

Finished this up yesterday after working out all the bugs. Special thanks to martyfnmcfly for his clearcoating wizardry and assistance with disassembly. This took 12.5 days totalling about 75 hours.

also thanks to vid1900 and cody chun for the troubleshooting assistance. as it turns out it was a lot simpler than I initially thought. this is the problem with doing a restore on a game you have played one ball on EVER...

Lookin good man....lookin good!

#15 8 years ago

you bored and ready to sell this yet?

#16 8 years ago

Great job!

I saw an embryon posted a few weeks ago somewhere nearby that seemed really nice for the money. You must've grabbed it. Rare to find one without the wear at the upper right side area. Great find and great work!

thanks buddy. i have a fair amount of attractive games but this one really stands out when you walk into the room. Gameplay is a little sluggish compared to ebd but not too bad at all. lots of shots and cool stuff for this era

lets not get hasty mesz I just rolled it out last night. hit me up in a week lol...

this was 7 minutes from my house. probably what you saw. it was refreshing starting with one that wasn't ready for the landfill. the pics look good but it is stunning in person especially with that droning background sound. i might have to pick up a blotter or two of acid...

#21 8 years ago

thanks lso to sparkup in..... well I dont know exactly where he is but pretty sure it's not in the us. He helped me with the captive ball setup in the center.

#22 8 years ago

Nice work, such a stunning looking game.

I miss my Embryon ... especially now! Nice job.

Did you change all your bumper and slingshot switch capacitors? My Embryon was sluggish then it sped up a lot when I made those changes. Due to the large playfield Embryon has some slow lob shots which are followed by very rapid ball speeds for a few seconds. It is an interesting game that way.

keep in mind when I say slow it is all relative. it sits next to EBD and take a look at the other games in my collection. it plays pretty sleick for a game of that age and size actually. your description of lob shots followed by rapids balls speeds is accurate.
pops and slings are fairly live. i did not change caps. do you mean replace with same value or change to different value?

Just put new ones in, the old ones slowly turn into resistors as they dry out and cause strange behaviour, a lot of people start clipping them off and not replacing them. You want .05 microfarad-ish, between .04-.06 would do what you need. You want to change all of them since a bad one on a column or row affects the rest of the row or column it is on. Embryon has many caps on various switches, the 4 pops, 2 slings, all the stand up targets and momentary switches behind rubbers. Also check the coin door switches it is best to use them on the coin switches but definitely don't leave any old ones.

I understand what you say about speed being relative. I also have a High Speed and the ball speed is pretty comparable but only in bursts.

sounds like a pain in the balls! ceramic disc .05ufd from great plains? where'd you get them? I should have a bunch of these since i have a bunch of ballys

Ceramics are nice since the don't dry out like electrolytics. Great Plains is good, I use Digi-Key mostly, these are cheap parts.

#29 8 years ago

Damn that playfield is quite reflective! Great job! Embryon is a fantastic game!

#30 8 years ago

Beautiful work, it's my favorite widebody game.

#31 8 years ago

Boy, that playfield looks really nice. Like what you done, overall.

#32 8 years ago

I also like the silver trim around the backbox.

#33 8 years ago

THANKS YOU GUYS. JUST TWEAKED HER UP A BUT MORE. OOPS CAPS again. added some height boosters under the back legs and there was an issue in the uterus thing right in the center. one of my curved ball guides popped out and wasnt allowing ball on right to go up and hit the target. that makes a huge difference in gameplay/scoring. i was a little reluctant on this game but gotta say its really really cool and playing really smooth and fast. on to f2k next. this time i will take before pics

2 weeks later
#34 8 years ago

added some more cool shit last night. replaced (4) "flashers" in uterus thing with 9 smd towers. added (2) 7 led strips to apron behind flippers. added (2) 7 led strips behind grill. just removed the 44 base twin smd's and used the 44 base adapter from the kit. all lighting from comet. whaddya think? oh yeah i hooked up a powered sub too. sounds awesome since there's plenty of low frequency sounds on this game. hit me up if you want more info

ps. the reason I put flashers in quotation marks is I dont think they are true flashers. they are also wired in series so if one goes out none of them work. discovered that while trying to jam the fat let bases into the crappy plastic 555 sockets

#36 8 years ago

I like the idea of the apron LEDs, but not a fan of being able to stare directly at them when looking down...

#37 8 years ago

Damnit, OP, I love what you did here. By far my favorite WB pin, and favorite machine overall from that era.

Thing looks absolutely beautiful. Love it. Love it. LOVE. IT.

#38 8 years ago

I like the grill LED's, they look great on this! I'm going to do that on my Grand Lizard rebuild....just need to decide what color....

#39 8 years ago
Quoted from MrBellMan:

i would never intentionally mount a light source that my eye catches directly. you cant see them when you are playing but you see the results of them being there. it's especially cool because you do see their reflection in a ton of places but the shiny plces are all small. acorn nuts, ball guides and chrome accents on the back box. I tumble all of my pinballs so the effect these strips have on the is spectacular as is the effect on the flippers

thanks man. these pics were taken from angles so you can see the leds and where I put them however when you are playing you only see the glow coming out of the grill. I need to get a smoke machine next lol. Actually i might tap into the flasher circuit and run a flasher in there too

appreciate the love man. i have 12 games in the gameroom plenty of newer stuff and nothing compares looks-wise to this game. it is more stunning in person especially when you are playing with the sub pounding away in concert with that background sound

#42 8 years ago

You also have to appreciate someone who uses Capt. James T. Kirk as their avatar image!

Looks like crap and its been over a week!!! Time to sell it!!!

Game is looking good! I do like the lights behind the grille !!

You tied a sub into Embryon? That might be a good upgrade for mine. Do you run the high level speaker leads into the amp or tap into the low level somewhere.

just paralelled right from the speaker tabs out throguh the bottom of the cab into the input of the sub. I have been round and round on this topic and the best way is the easiest way. My concern was that I would be stressing the amp in the game but I have had 6 of the hooked up for 6 months or so with no issues. do it man it is completely awesome

Those extra LED's and flashers behind the net and at the flipperbuttons, where do you connect stuff like that to get power? been thinking about doing the same with my Grand Lizard but i have no clue on where to "steal" power from.

3 years later
#49 4 years ago

your Embryon looks fantastic. I'm in the process of restoring mine.
Did you have to do any Cabinet touch up painting?
If so, do you remember the paint colors?

thanks.
