So I've been keeping my eyes out for pins for the better part of a year. Never bought one, but really enjoy playing. Found one that might fit the bill! High Speed is for sale locally and the price is within my budget, though I wouldn't mind hearing if you guys think the price is right based on the limited info and images I have so far. Seller is asking $1800. Says the machine plays fine, no known issue, and he's owned it for two years. Have some pictures, and he said there is some play field wear above the mylar. Said it has new flippers, new clear ramp, all LEDs. Recently cleared and waxed, cabinet and back glass in great condition.

I'm completely new to this, so looking for any advice. I have a basic understanding of electronics (IT guy) and should be able to pick up the basics. The community here looks great and have already spent hours reading about transporting, troubleshooting, maintenance, etc. But I also don't want to get screwed on my first pin, and was hoping someone knowledgeable might be willing to go with my to check the game out. I'll play it and get a basic idea if there's any issues and its condition, but that's about all I'm good for.

He said he's free Sunday around 1pm and pin is located in the Glenolden area. If not, no worries - any advice is greatly appreciated!

Looks like a pretty decent original high speed but that price is really high imo. Ive bought two high speed 2's(getaway) for a few hundred more.

With that playfield condition and wear it sld be priced around 1000-1250.

#4 5 years ago

Two things.

Batteries are still on main board. Remove them and carefully inspect for any leaks prior or current. If you don’t know what to look for it’s basically any chalky whiteish corrosion on the terminals in the battery case and much worse, on the traces or legs of anything.

Else looks to be in reasonable shape, far worse playfields are fairly common on this game.

Price wise, no comment... pricing is fairly regional if we’re talking about a hundred or two difference. But certainly you could try to get lower. I would worry less about if you over or under pay by a couple hundred and focus (as you appear to be) on getting a good game. That one looks decent but ya gotta check the boards and if you buy it pull the batteries out and toss them in the trash at the residence it sits in before you even load it up, they are a ticking time bomb.

This.

Don't overpay for it. Condition says $1300 max and that's if you really really wanted it. Hopefully someone local with experience can help you before you lose your money.

Chiming in with the others on that price is too high. If $1800 is your budget, you could get a "better" game. I am in in no way putting down High Speed, it is one of my favorite pins, it just isn't worth that much in that condition.

I would pass on this one way over priced for the wear on PF. More like 1000 to 1200 like said above.

#9 5 years ago

Yeh, thought this might be the case. I did get him down on price a little bit, but as I looked at more and more previous sales and examples on the site here, the realization that it was priced high started to hit me. Would love to have the game, but I'm not willing to overpay either. I'll keep looking. Thanks!

I would just show up with 1k in hand... Sometimes just seeing a grand in hand motivates people to budge on price. That's how I scored a South Park for cheap.

HS is a great game and long time keeper for me. That being said I agree price is high. 1300 would be the max in that condition.

What games are you interested in? There's always a variety on Philly craigslist.
Demo Man
Tee'd off
Comet
Alien Poker
Much more depending on price & taste...

So I'm resurrecting this thread. Another High Speed popped up this week. And I'm starting to kick myself for not taking the first High Speed I saw. Seems prices continue to climb for this game! Found one for $2400 with wiggle room in the price. Yes, it probably is above market value. Yes, it APPEARS to be in very nice shape. I'm not looking to buy this game to sell it, so if I get enjoyment out of it, I pay the price.

Not a ton of details at this point. Seller says the game has been shopped and is 98% original. Playfield is in great condition (Why he bought it) and has had it worked on by an ex TNT Amusement tech (Our local Pinball seller/shop.)

Information from the seller -

"Broads were pulled and cleaned. Games has new rubbers and some LED.
according to my TNT friend, its one of the nicest ones he has seen. It just lost the lower right LED

The play field is why I bought this one and the cabinet and black glass are very good as well. I have seen a lot of High Speeds and by far this is upper class in condition.

Its currently shrink wrapped an stored. "

He's the next town over and has no problem opening it up for me to inspect and play. I know the basics of what to look for. . .

Thoughts?

Let me ask this - when you're buying a used pin from a private party, how deep of an inspection do you perform?

For example, I was looking over http://homepinballrepair.com/index.php/buy-pinball-machine-look/ about running through all the diagnostics, testing all the mechnicals/electrical components, etc. Do you guys spend that kind of time with a machine when evaluating it for purchase? Maybe these things are quick/easy to test, I'm not sure. So just asking around to see how deep I should get at inspection time. I'm decent with electronics/soldering as well as mechanicals, so I have no problem if I need to do some minor repairs to get started and actually look forward to it. But I also don't want to pay top dollar if I need to start with repairs.

My rule the more you pay the more you test / check out the pin. I would play test and make sure there is no credit dot etc.. Running the lamp and coils tests are always good too. If you need any help feel free to reach out to me we can talk on the phone if need be.
