I have recently joined your ranks as a Maverick owner. Last week a lady called me at my Pinball Repair business and asked me to give her $500 for her old broken Pin. So I went to check it out and it was a one owner, Maverick that didn’t boot! It has some minor sun fade on the right side and heavy sun fade on the plastics... but other wise in great shape!

Needless to say, I bought it and took it home... on its Birthday even!! October 25th!

I put in a Rotten Dog MPU while I diagnose the original MPU. I just finished stripping and cleaning everything, installed all new Titan Rubber everywhere and new bulbs. No LEDs. I also installed all new drop targets and decals from Marco. However, many of them are badly warped, so I may have to do that again.

Now I am chasing down multiple switch issue, but once I have it fixed it should be a hoot!

Here are a few pics. Not bad for $500 and a 30 minute drive.

I’m very happy with mine. Now if I could just figure out what is wrong with it. Apparently, slapping on the side triggers several switches. And several drop targets seem to cause an end of ball.

Slowly but surely. I also need to rebuild all the opto sensors

#1113 4 years ago

That’s the odd thing. I have tested every single switch and they all report only firing their switch. All SEEM to work fine. But I’ll be playing a game, the ball will strike a seemingly random drop target and it just ends the ball. My bonus will start counting and the flippers go dead. Then it spits out the next ball.

I say it seems random, because it has done it on almost every drop target at least once. But, if I hit the king and ace of spades at the same time.... ball ends almost every time.

#1115 4 years ago

I’m having a hard time discerning what is causing the ball to end. What is the trigger for that in this game?

*Edit*
It is the trough roll overs and CPU Logic.

#1116 4 years ago

The more I screw with it, the more I agree it is a connection issue. It eems to be vibration based.. not drop target based... Which is why it
moves around.

*Edit*
It seems with your all's help, I have solved that issue. The ball trough rollover harness was zip tied to the coil for the sling. The zip tie was pushing the connector apart. Once I fixed that, I am now able to play a game, without the ball ending prematurely!! Thank you!!

Now to pull it all back apart, to get at the optos for in front of the wheel.. and try to fix them.

#1117 4 years ago

That took a while, but it is now playing seemingly 100%. Is the paddle wheel supposed to run the entire time a game is playing? That seems like unnecessary wear on the motor.

#1119 4 years ago

It is officially done. It was completely stripped and cleaned, all new Titan Rubber and all new bulbs. All six options have been repaired and multiple shorts and bad connections fixed.

Addams has a new set of Titan Rubber waiting on it as well. I’ll start in it’s shop job next.

BTW, this is my great deal wall. I have less than $3600 in all three tables. TAF and Maverick both were bought from their original owners. Paid asking price on both.

#1120 4 years ago

That didn't last long. I got about 20 games in and it went haywire again. I think, instead of fighting with possible connector issues under the playfield, I am just going to go ahead and replace all of them with something else. Maybe weatherpack connectors.

Added over 4 years ago:

I replaced the trough switches and the problem went away. YAY!!!!

#1122 4 years ago

I replaced every piece of rubber on my Maverick with Titan rubbers. Even those odd short post rubbers. It looks and plays phenomenally!!! I also created a black and a white kit of Titan's site, for Maverick based off of what I used to do mine. Enjoy!

#1123 4 years ago

Well, after a couple weeks of chasing issues... I have decided to replace every single switch diode on the table. I cannot seem to track down my random switch issues. I have fixed a couple, but more always turn up and so far, all but one has been a blown diode. I have no idea what fried so many of them.... But it must have happened when the MPU burned up the 3W resistors.

1 week later
#1124 4 years ago

Update, for posterity. Maverick is now playing at 98%!! The issues found were, a bad diode on the right slingshot, a bad diode on the VUK, Bad diodes all 4 on the start and buy in buttons, bad buy in button, bad ramp switch, broken VUK armature, rebuilt all 6 opto boards, all new drop targets.

Not bad all in all. I am also going to replace the slingshot plastics. And any others I can find.

The only issue I have left is a real head scratcher. It is impossible, seemingly, to get the middle (2) skill shot. It will always give you 1. I have checked, all 4 skill shot switches activate, every time a ball rolls over them. But send the ball into hole 2 and you will always get the 1 skill shot reward instead.

#1126 4 years ago

I have tried it six ways from sunday, it always registers. I guess I will just go ahead and replace it, see what happens then.

#1128 4 years ago

I do have to say, it is going to almost be a shame to sell this table when done. It turned out to be a LOT more fun that I ever expected. But the proceeds from it will fund my A13 restore and my High Speed restore.

#1130 4 years ago

My biggest gripe, is how the paddle wheel runs all the time during game play. I don't care for the constant noise.

#1135 4 years ago

Ok, so it is time to order parts to repair the MPU on my Maverick, so the replacement RD can go into Batman forever.

These entire sections are pretty well smoked. Are there any updates I should do? Or is it just pretty much replace same with same?

#1137 4 years ago
Quoted from ViperJelly:

Strange behavior. Looks like my rows are shorted on my switches (white wires). When I activate one switch it activates them all. Most noticable on the left flipper when it slam tilts. Did not do this before I shopped it. I did take out one of the drop target banks but did not modify any wiring (changed targets and lights underneath). Any thoughts on where to check? Thanks.

Check/replace all of your Diodes on those switches. I just spent a month chasing down a similar issue.. see my previous posts.

#1141 4 years ago

Yes, they register as closed when down. Check and make sure that when down they are indeed making contact.
Also, the wires on the drop targets have a habit of getting pinched between the PF and cab. Make sure none are broken, or cut.

If you can't find anything, find the two connections for them on the board and jumper them, see if the switch works. That section of the MPU on my original board is fried. I am just about to rebuild it.

#1142 4 years ago

Also switches only register for a second on one of the switch tests. you may have to go to Active Switches.

#1144 4 years ago
Quoted from ViperJelly:

You are correct, the drop target banks all work in active switches. Makes me feel a little better. Have checked about 20 or so diodes, they all look good so far. Will keep grinding tonight.
Edit: I just put a new rottendog board in when I got the machine. The original had some bad acid damage. I don't think it is the board but wanted to clarify that point.

I was unable to find the faulty diode from a test. I just found the switch column that all my errors were on and replaced them all, one by one, until I found the one that solved all of my issues. In my case, it was the one on my right slingshot switch. I tested that diode prior to replacing it, it tested fine. Even with the switch active.

#1379 3 years ago

Soo..... I bought another one. This one is not nearly as nice as my first one was. But I will fix it. I am picking it up tomorrow morning.

This one however has a Red and black boat.. and it is cracked. So, who is vacuforming new boats? Or even 3d printing them?

#1380 3 years ago
Quoted from DK:

So I have an odd sound issue. When the game starts up you can hear the “horn” of the Lauren Belle but that’s the only sound I can get out of the game. No other sounds happen. What should I be looking at to restore the sounds and music for the game?

Errors like that are usually a sound rom issue. Might try replacing the caps ont he sound board.. They are nearly 30 years old.. and replace the sound roms.

#1385 3 years ago

I got my Maverick home! It’s no where as nice as the one owner model I had before, but I’ll get it up to snuff soon.

Has anyone ever seen a red Lauren Belle before??

First time for me, it’s kinda neat, get the decal kit for it,
Also your shooter rod Is different.

I already ordered the last prototype Poker chip shooter rod from PPS. I'm still looking for the poker face flipper bats.

Quoted from crujones4life:

Wow! Someone played the shit out of that Maverick! I love cleaning playfields that dirty and seeing the transformation.

Yep! The cab is beat to heck from a LOOOONG life on route. I have a LOT of work to do to this one, but it will be beautiful when done.

#1393 3 years ago

So my Red Lauren belle, is a white one that someone air brushed. However, it is broken badly, so I definitely need a new one.

#1397 3 years ago
Quoted from Williampinball:

Thanks for the reply they been great too me also ,Cab decals

Speaking of, does anyone have a color match for the brown on these cabs? Is there some magical Rustoleum spray can that is a near perfect match?

Also, does anyone make stencils? I don't see any on Pinball Pimp.

Also, I think williampinball was selling a red decal kit. Should check with him

Thank you!

I find Tudor brown here in Canada is what I use its close too Macerick brown

Perfect! I can even get that in spray cans, which should make it nice for touchups.

#1403 3 years ago

Walking through the paint isle at Walmart, I may have found a near perfect color. Rustoleum Gloss Espresso. Here is just a quick test spray on a busted corner.

Does anyone have a high resolution Playfield scan of this table?
I am going to assist the VPX community in virtualizing this table, while I restore mine. But I do not have the means to scan my playfield.

Does anyone know if this the the best match too a Maverick paint ,thanks for any help

It is not an exact match. It is a shade or two darker. But under normal light, it is a damned close match.

Marco has brand new plastic sets for the table. I jsut bought one a couple months ago.

#1485 2 years ago

The best way to get them out, is with everything taken apart. You need to do it for a DEEP cleaning and waxing anyway, plus to replace all the rubber back there.

They almost always just need to be resoldered..

1 month later
#1499 2 years ago

Now, if you order the plastic set from Marco for this table, you will get a COMPLETE set!
I bought the set and found that two pieces were missing, so I sent them to Marco to replicate and include in future sets. They were a big clear piece from the upper right corner and the piece that goes under the Lauren Belle.

It was amazing how fast the turnaround was! Less than a week.

I bought my Maverick 13 months ago, in BAAAAD shape. Over the last year I have replaced all the plastics, rebuilt everything and cleaned the hell out of it. Today was to be the day I finally get to play it. My last pieces came in yesterday. So today, as I buttoned it up, I was lowering the playfield and the ramp caught the edge of the cabinet.

Sadly, I am now looking for a new ramp. does anyone make them?

I have a Maverick Pinsound mix I made awhile back…if anyone ever wants it, feel free to ask

Ohhhhh.. I was just about to have my sound board rebuilt, as it is dead... But your pinsound mix is pretty nice! I would definitely be interested.

#1562 2 years ago

Well, my Pinsound board is ordered and shipped.

After reassembly I have an issue with all optos. They have all been reflowed, after the issue was detected, with no change. They are all lit. I can see the light, but interrupting the beam does not register a switch hit. If I jumper the pins at the MPU, I get a switch hit. But once I plug them in, nothing on any of the three sets.

Any thoughts on what my issue might be?

#1568 2 years ago

I feel like I asked this, back when I bought my first Maverick, but can't find the post.

So, has anyone ever made an Alternate translight for this table? My wife absolutely HATES Gibson... and hates seeing his face on such a fun table. So I will probably have to come up with something, to keep it in the main collection for long.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Maverick is such a fun and difficult game. My space right now is limited to two pins. I'm torn with keeping it or moving on to something else. Maybe I'll take it to Pinfest this year in Allentown, PA and set it up in the free play area and see if anyone makes an offer.

I sold a BEAUTIFUL one, for what I thought was an insane price, and regretted it so much, I have spent the last year, restoring a WRECK of a table to replace it.

#1571 2 years ago

I am still searching for a Plastic Ramp and a Lauren Belle, to finish my table. It seems the ramp that CoinOp-Parts had for sale.. is lost. Thus far, they have been unable to locate it to send to me.

So... Who is sitting on a ramp and a boat?
I NEED them.

#1573 2 years ago

Since the Maverick flipper bats are unobtanium, I started thinking about alternatives. Well, I found one!

The original symbols are 8.5mm tall. These are 8mm. I think they will look perfect on the flipper bats. I'll find out in a couple of weeks!

#1575 2 years ago

My brand new ramp should be here Wednesday! With a little luck, I will have a fully playable table by Thursday evening!

#1578 2 years ago

I have a new issue I have stumbled across. These two lights come on as soon as the machine powers on, then go off, but they are on in every column test and when the table turns off, they stay on for a few seconds.

They were also very bright and melted a bulb, I found q85 was bad and replaced it, but I can’t find another component that is bad. Any ideas? Thanks!

Quoted from Mattyk:

On mine, the last two lights (cards on right) light in the beginning and then go off as play starts. Next time I order from comet I’ll grab a couple of non ghosting bulbs to see if that helps

I doubt if it will. I put incandescent back in and non ghosting leds. No change. Popped in another board and the problem went away. So it is definitely something on the board. But I am not sure what.

#1581 2 years ago

I got my new ramp yesterday, so I spent a couple hours today, stripping the old one and cleaning up and polishing the parts and getting them moved over. I still have to do the flap and the habitrail lock plates.

The stickers were unobtainable it seemed, so I carefully peeled mine off and used Mylar to reapply them to the underside of the new ramp.

I was too lazy and impatient to scan them and have them printed. Sorry.

Hopefully I’ll be playing tomorrow!

One more post and I'll stop for a few days. Let me just say, each and every one of you needs to buy the Pinsound board, their cheaper one works fine if you want to save a few bucks. And get this Orchestration from Darkstar1234 ! It is not on Pinsound's site for whatever reason, but it makes the game so much better!!! Even on the 28 year old, factory speakers, the change is amazing! Plus having more songs is a blessing.

A few dozen games in and they have held up to ball strikes from air balls and basic play. I suspect they will outlast the flippers.

They hold up a LOT better than the alignment on the optos I'm probably going to replace them with cherry switches. I am a little tired of constantly having to adjust them.

#1604 2 years ago

So... Being sick and tired of dealing with the Optos over and over and over, I stripped all three transmitters bare, threw the bare, solder free boards, into the ultra sonic, then installed all new components and the brightest red LEDs I had.

So far, no more issues.

#1608 2 years ago
Quoted from Sirgubster9:

are you guys talking about the sensors for the lauren belle?

Yes.

#1611 2 years ago
Quoted from Sirgubster9:

so question to you guys, is this process documented on here somewhere because I dont understand exactly what you did but would love to have my lauren belle work a bit better.

What I did, was assuredly overkill. But that is kind of my thing. My clients really enjoy that on their tables too. But you need to buy the brightest 5mm red LEDs you can get and replaced the LED on all three transmitters. The receiver side should be fine. The brighter light supposedly makes aiming and vibration less of an issue, as it is able to generate a charge easier. The Receiver side is essentially a solar cell. The light from the Red LED on the transmitter, generates a charge in the LED of the receiver side. That charge goes to the transistor and is used as a closed switch signal.

#1613 2 years ago
Quoted from Sirgubster9:

oh ok so you basically just switched out the bulb and that was it? Basically get a brighter bulb so it doesn't have to match up as exactly?

yes

Maverick in GOOD and working condition is a $4k table all day now. I buy, restore and sell pins. The market has boomed and I have seen 6 Mavericks all sell recently for $4k and up. Honestly... It would take 7k for me to even consider selling mine, now that it is restored and modded.

As for tips, learn your shots. Take the glass off, practice a single shot over and over and over, until your perfect it. Memorize where on the flipper you need to hit the ball to make the shot. This will help you learn to predict shots during a game. Once you can hit your shots at will, you can make 300 million plus, per mode.

#1627 2 years ago

In this market, if you sell it, you are likely to make a tidy profit. On the flip side, if like most of us, you miss it and end up buying another one, the market is still climbing, so you will likely pay considerably more for one.

Quoted from Mattyk:

I broke a drop target. Any tips on how to change it? Also any recommendation on transferring the old target decal to the new target? Double sided tape?

This is one of the easiest tables to replace drop targets on. You can unplug the entire assembly and remove it from the table to make it easier.
Also, just buy new drop target decals. It will never stay re-stuck.

Definitely fix that. No diodes on the coils will blow all kinds of stuff.

Quoted from Dr_Gonzo:

I got some parts in and started getting it cleaned up. So, the when they drilled the playfield it seems they missed a GI lamp? Certainly looks like it, I assume everyone's is like this? Both sides are missing a hole and a lamp.

They are all like that. I suspect it is from when the table was supposed to be a widebody

Quoted from classicgamefan:

Can anyone help identify if this bent wire piece is a part for my Maverick?
I’ve waited too long putting my Maverick back together and didn’t take enough teardown pics! Does this part go to Maverick? (I’m thinking part of the Lauren Belle assembly.). It’s also possible this has nothing to do with the game and just ended up next to my stack of parts.
Thanks!

I have fully stripped 2 Mavericks and I do not recognize that piece.

I absolutely LOVE this table.... But I REALLY hate the optos, they are a near constant source of trouble. I desoldered each one and resoldered them when I shopped the table... and since then have had to pull it all apart 2 more times in the last year, just because of opto issues. And guess what? I need to do it again!

Surely there are better solutions now.

Yea, I am tired of dealing with them. I am going to do some digging and see if I can find a better solution.
Maybe an eddy sensor or a magnetic switch.
