Your basic idea should work fine.
You don't need the diode shown in your schematic. You DO need to hook up the LEDs so they are in series and both "pointed" in the same direction.
The resistor's ideal value should be R = (50 - 2 * Vf) / Id, where Vf = the forward voltage drop of one LED and Id = the desired current through the diode; both values should be found on the datasheet for the LEDs.
If the LEDs don't light up just swap the wires going from the LEDs and resistor to the coil.
Finally, be careful to make sure the new wires don't touch anything - there's 50V on both wires when the coil isn't firing!
