Just picked up a Mars AL4-L1_D4C off of ebay, described as being in excellent working condition. Just hooked it up to my LOTR and having a couple of problems. I've turned "Bill Validator on" in the adjustments menu and have the correct custom pricing set. When I plug the validator in, the motor runs for about a minute, but then will not accept a bill. Not sure if this is just a dip switch setting on the acceptor that needs to be adjusted.

The other strange problem is when I start up the machine and the validators motor is running I tried to run a bill through. It pulls the bill in halfway then reverses and spits it out with what looks like two ink stripes half way up the bill where the rollers are (on both sides). It's not just a little ink, it's heavy ink stripes (still wet after 2 hours).

Has anyone ever encountered this or know what could be causing it?

Looks like the belts have turned into "goo" and need to be replaced.

Do I have to order belts directly from Mars or are they sold aftermarket?

Also, would the belts turning to goo keep it from working properly?

Only Authorized MEI service centers can order parts. And they aren't supposed to sell them on the open market. DBVs are supposed to be sent in to be properly serviced
A couple of options for you are:

AECO
Vendors exchange
Betson Enterprises

You left one off the list:

Wachtor Electronics

They are an authorized Mars service center and have reasonable prices. Several of my route operator friends use Wachtor for their bill acceptor repairs and are quite happy with them.

Thanks Ken. Yes! The more choices the better.

I am surprised it can even pull a bill in with that much roller/belt damage. If it was sold to you as "Working Condition", I would think you have a valid claim with the EBay seller for a refund.

Yeah, it was sold in "Excellent condition and works" I think the refund route will be my first option. Otherwise I'll be putting more money into it getting it repaired.

Just started putting a couple of machines on route, since I have a few location connections and see how it goes. Figured getting bill validators for the newer machines would help them earn.

Thanks for the service center info. If I continue to put machines on route, I'll eventually need to use them anyway. Or if I can't get a refund, I'll just get it repaired.
